En una visita a Egipto, Tomas Noronha, criptoanalista y profesor de historia en una universidad portuguesa, se ve abordado por una desconocida. La mujer lleva consigo una copia de un viejo e inedito documento y pretende que el historiador portugues le ayude a descifrarlo. El texto tiene un titulo tan sugerente como enigmatico: Die Gottesformel --es decir, La formula de Dios. A partir de ese momento, Tomas se ve envuelto en una sucesion de aventuras que le llevan a viajar por diferentes paises y extranos parajes, desde Iran hasta el TIbet.
