Architecture for the Commons dives into an analysis of how the
tectonics of a building is fundamentally linked to the economic
organizations that allow them to exist. By tracing the origins and
promises of current technological practices in design, the book
provides an alternative path, one that reconsiders the means of
achieving complexity through combinatorial strategies. This move
requires reconsidering serial production with crowdsourcing and
user content in mind. The ideas presented will be explored through
the design research developed within Plethora Project, a design
practice that explores the use of video game interfaces as a
mechanism for participation and user design. The research work
presented throughout the book seeks to align with a larger project
that is currently taking place in many different fields: The
Construction of the Commons. By developing both the ideological and
physical infrastructure, the project of the Commons has become an
antidote to current economic practices that perpetuate inequality.
The mechanisms of the production and governance of the Commons are
discussed, inviting the reader to get involved and participate in
the discussion. The current political and economic landscape calls
for a reformulation of our current economic practices and
alternative value systems that challenge the current market
monopolies. This book will be of great interest not only to
architects and designers studying the impact of digital
technologies in the field of design but also to researchers
studying novel techniques for social participation and cooperating
of communities through digital networks. The book connects
principles of architecture, economics and social sciences to
provide alternatives to the current production trends.
The contingent valuation of water is one of the key components when
wanting to implement proposals for integrated water management in
mountain basins. Management of Hydrological Systems (MHS), is one
of the great challenges that the Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) currently demand. Mainly in mountain basins with fragile
ecosystems that face strong pressures such as poverty, urban and
population growth, low water supply and sanitation, and climate
change. Management of Hydrological Systems aims for sustainable
water management, through contingent water valuation, showing the
reader in a didactic way the procedure to follow in mountain
basins. This book offers a complete characterization of the main
problems affecting this type of basin, as well as the detailed
procedure of the contingent valuation of water, which directly
involves users. As such, this work is offered in relation to this
urgent need for practical guidance demanded by society (SDGs), and
is based on practical and real examples, rather than theoretical
constructions, from places where these issues have not been widely
addressed. The text is recommended as a way forward, not only for
water resource managers and decision- and policymakers but also for
students and teachers who wish to implement this MHS guide.
The 2011 Arab uprisings led to a great proliferation of studies on
the situations in the Arab countries of the Mediterranean, with
particular attention given to their young people, whose role was
particularly central. Eight years on, in-depth exploration is still
needed of the conditions in which millions of (mainly young) people
demanded change. In this context, this volume examines the state
and diversity of the forms of socioeconomic, political and cultural
marginalization facing the region's young men and women, as well as
the strategies and routes of contestation by which they escape
them. Through the interdisciplinary empiricism of this book, based
on the results emerging from the SAHWA Project (funded by the
European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme, grant
agreement n 613174), we aspire to build a complex description and
analysis of the current situation of the Arab Mediterranean youth.
The aim is to fathom out young people's patterns, agency and living
conditions, focusing on the relational character of the juvenile
worlds actively constructed by themselves. The authors explore the
main trends that are reflected in the social strategies, cultural
constructions and changes within the Arab youth population, and
whether the creation of new lifestyles and the emergence of youth
cultures are an indicator of sociopolitical transitions. To answer
all these questions the researchers have conducted a comprehensive
study in five Arab Mediterranean countries: Algeria, Egypt,
Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia. Based on mixed method research the
data collection is composed of two primary sources: the SAHWA Youth
Survey 2016 (2017), in which 10,000 young people were interviewed;
and the SAHWA Ethnographic Fieldwork 2015, involving more than 200
young people.

The key theme of this book is organizational learning and its
consequences for the field of aviation safety. Air safety rates
have been improving for a long time, demonstrating the effects of a
good learning model at work. However, the pace of improvement has
almost come to a standstill. Why is this? Many safety improvements
have been embodied in technology. New devices and procedures appear
almost daily, yet the rate of air safety improvement has dragged in
recent years. Improving Air Safety through Organizational Learning
explains this situation as being the consequence of a development
model supported chiefly by information technology being introduced
as an alternative to human operators. This is not a book about the
convenience of including or not including IT in aviation, but an
open discussion about the adequacy and risks of some practices in
the field. Two different but complementary issues emerge. Firstly,
a real improvement in air safety requires a different approach,
since the present one seems now to be exhausted. Secondly, the
current approach has powerful economic roots, and any new approach
must deal with this fact, improving safety rates without becoming
financially damaging. Consequently the book is divided into two
parts. Part one deals with the issue of the present learning model
organizing the conclusions around accident reports that show
themselves the existence of a problem: the present use of
technology makes the system better at doing things already known,
while at the same time it makes the whole system worse at dealing
with unplanned situations. Part two suggests a new development
model, one that makes strong use of technology but at the same time
questions every step: what knowledge will disappear from the system
and what is the potential effect of that loss?

Air safety is right now at a point where the chances of being
killed in an aviation accident are far lower than the chances to
winning a jackpot in any of the major lotteries. However, keeping
or improving that performance level requires a critical analysis of
some events that, despite scarce, point to structural failures in
the learning process. The effect of these failures could increase
soon if there is not a clear and right development path. This book
tries to identify what is wrong, why there are things to fix, and
some human factors principles to keep in aircraft design and
operations. Features Shows, through different events, how the
system learns through technology, practices, and regulations and
the pitfalls of that learning process Discusses the use of
information technology in safety-critical environments and why
procedural knowledge is not enough Presents air safety management
as a successful process, but at the same time, failures coming from
technological and organizational features are shown Offers ways to
improve from the human factors side by getting the right lessons
from recent events
Despues de publicar 6 tomos del Diccionario de cubanismos mas
