Meine Beschiiftigung mit den Befunden der Sauglings- und Kleinkind- forschung iiber die ersten 2 Lebensjahre erwachst aus meinem wichtigsten beruflichen Anliegen: ich bin Kliniker, und mir geht es urn die Psychoanalyse von Patienten. Ich habe 30 Jahre lang aus meiner k1inischen EinsteIIung heraus gearbeitet und theoretisiert und es immer als lohnend und spannend empfunden, meine Fragen aus der Beobachtung des Abnormalen abzuleiten; ich versuchte Hypothesen dariiber zu aufzusteIIen, wie sich Krankheitsbilder entwickeln. Ich war viele Jahre lang von der inneren Stimmigkeit, die von den Antworten der analytischen Theorie ausging, und auch von ihrer kli- nischen Niitzlichkeit buchstablich so absorbiert, daB ich iibersah, daB mog- licherweise meine analytische Haltung die Konstrukte pragte, die ich verwendete. Als ich dann allerdings zunehmend auf die, "new wave" der Sauglingsforschung aufmerksam wurde, beeindruckten mich nicht nur die neuartigen Ergebnisse, sondern auch die ganz andere Haltung, in. der die Beobachtungen durchgefilhrt wurden.
