Ecology, Spirituality, and Cosmology in Edwidge Danticat: Crossroads as Ritual examines the form and function of ritual in four of Danticat's fictional works-The Dew Breaker; The Farming of Bones; Claire of the Sea Light; and Breath, Eyes, Memory-to reveal how these texts create textual topography that heals and clarifies Africana consciousness. Filtering ritual through the symbolic iconography of the cosmogram and Africana women's literary tradition, Joyce White investigates modern articulations of the cosmogram's cosmological and philosophical iterations within the life and existence of Africana people and establishes set systems and beliefs that are manifest through ritual practices. White argues that emblemed by the cruciform symbol of the crossroads, the cosmogram within Danticat's texts emanates extendable textual, liminal, and ritualized spaces through the inscription of the symbol that exists within and without the boundaries of pagination. The extension of textual landscape expands the borders and boundaries of a given text and provides additional space for contemplation and rumination incongruent to those spaces in its common and normal iterations.

Afro-Caribbean Women's Writing and Early American Literature (Hardcover): Latoya Jefferson-James Afro-Caribbean Women's Writing and Early American Literature (Hardcover)
Latoya Jefferson-James; Contributions by Tajanae Barnes, Regis Fox, Jacinth Howard, Latoya Jefferson-James, …
R2,384 Discovery Miles 23 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Afro-Caribbean Women's Writing and Early American Literature is both pedagogical and critical. The text begins by re-evaluating the poetry of Wheatley for its political commentary, demonstrates how Hurston bridges several literary genres and geographies, and introduces Black women writers of the Caribbean to some American audiences. It sheds light on lesser-discussed Black women playwrights of the Harlem Renaissance and re-evaluates the turn-of-the century concept, Noble Womanhood in light of the Cult of Domesticity.

""The book is tangibly spiritually reinforcing and welcoming, in short, an esoteric joy, accessible to all, and much-needed by many."" Reviewed by Twitter handle (@LoisCHenderson) Freelance Book Reviewer. The hardest thing for me as a grandmother writing about love, was to cut away all that is incidental and keep only that which remains as the nobility and science of ecstasy. As a writer and woman whose loved and lost, I feel like it is impossible to build good relationships until we've burned away our youth and its fairy-tales, as well as learned misapprehensions from our past. In other words, we must retrain the brain to accept and maintain love.

Most believe out there somewhere above the clouds, past the moon and stars is a world of joy, love, imagination and creativity. Down here on the third rock from the Sun, that is our genius, too, and we must not be talked out of it. I am a nonartist and writer searching joy through creative self-expression. My story is kind of a walk through my mind while I'm writing and creating. I am not a doctor or psychologist. Though it was never my original intent when I began studying Art Therapy, my concern quite naturally turned from the idea of me "feeling good" to you "feeling good." Art Therapy uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages. Expressing ourselves creatively does more than bring us joy. It is just plain good medicine. It helps us resolve inner conflicts, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness. Even Jesus reminds us, if you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. What you do not bring forth from within will ultimately destroy you. I personally believe being happily engaged in writing and art making is better than not; and secondly, living without depression, pain and anger is better than living with them. Try doodling and scribbling yourself. Look out, if you're smiling, you're probably having fun. If you're interested in prints of my art work or would like to contact me personally, please e-mail me at [email protected]. Sincerely, Joyce White.
