Felix Julian Stern
R2,416 Discovery Miles 24 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Julian Stern
R2,703 Discovery Miles 27 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides an optimistic account of the value and role of schooling. Schooling is a common but not universal approach to education and has need of its own distinctive justification, in contrast to other approaches such as home-based or work-based education. The book tackles and rejects the various large-scale 'functional' theories of schooling which continue to dominate current debates and policies, such as schooling supporting employment and the economy, or developing citizenship. Instead, it argues that schooling and schools should be viewed as places to learn community within and through community. The lived reality of relationships within schools, based on care and curiosity, is as strong as ever: and upon this foundation is built an original philosophy of schooling. This reflective book will appeal to students and scholars of philosophy of education and to all professionals concerned with schools.

The Art, Literature and Music of Solitude: Julian Stern The Art, Literature and Music of Solitude
Julian Stern
R3,540 Discovery Miles 35 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book presents a thematic analysis of various aspects of solitude, silence and loneliness, from the ancient world to the present day, explored thematically with consideration to the links between aloneness to other social and political issues. The themes include exile (expulsion from a community), ecstasy (getting ‘out of oneself’) and enstasy (being comfortable within oneself), to the Romantic idea of the artist as solitary. There is work on aloneness in and through nature, especially the importance of natural settings for positive experiences of solitude. A central theme is alienation and its emotions, with the idea of loneliness and the rejected self being a more modern experience. Modernism and postmodernism presented new forms of solitude in the twentieth century, and more recently there have been attempts to ‘recover’ the self, through therapeutic uses of the arts. All of these types and experiences of aloneness are seen through the lenses of artistic, literary and musical forms of expression, as aloneness is not only explored and articulated through these art forms, but is in many ways created through these art forms.

Photography & Psychoanalysis - The Development of Emotional Persuasion in Image Making (Paperback): Julian Stern Photography & Psychoanalysis - The Development of Emotional Persuasion in Image Making (Paperback)
Julian Stern; Stephen Bray
R803 Discovery Miles 8 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This concise, illustrated, work informs about the histories of photography and psychoanalysis. It describes how they came together in the 20th Century to revolutionize political propaganda and sales messages. It references the works of several 20th Century and contemporary photographers including: Edward Steichen, Brian Duffy, Helmut Newton, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Nan Goldin, Gregory Crewdson, Larry Clark, and Wang Qingsong. It includes a chapter summarizing and critiquing many of the thoughts of the philosopher and activist Susan Sontag, as well as being completely up-to-date with a Chapter about photographers Cindy Sherman and Miru Kim. The book demonstrates how images may be understood, and interpreted, using the ideas of Freud, Jung and Lacan. Written in simple language this isn't a work about how to make technically 'better' images, but rather a book to help you understand the psychological impact of images. You are introduced to various characters who influenced the development of both photography and psychoanalysis during the 19th and 20th centuries, and you are helped to appreciate the impact they continue to have today. Psychological and photographic concepts are added into the narrative until it becomes possible to look at examples of contemporary advertising images and campaigns using appropriate tools. Later, the text moves to look at the development of art, and domestic photography, including the force that commercial photography places upon these. In a relatively short journey you are guided through psychoanalysis and systems theory, photography, surrealism, advertising and much more. ""This is your chance to understand, and free your mind from, assaults by those images which, every day, make you feel less, and less, happy, unless you buy, buy, buy."" If you sell products, or services, it will help you to create more effective advertisements.

Julian Stern
R1,603 Discovery Miles 16 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recent interest in personalized learning and the issues raised by Every Child Matters have led to renewed enthusiasm for the more personal and holistic aspects of schooling. This fascinating monograph draws on empirical evidence from schools across the world to answer key questions such as: - What is the spirit of the school? - How does it differ from school ethos? - What can teachers and pupils do to contribute to the spirit of the school? Drawing heavily on research into learning theories (from the social constructivist tradition), community (from the philosophy of John Macmurray) and dialogue (from the philosophy of Martin Buber), Julian Stern's unique and illuminating book will stimulate fresh thinking about spiritual education.
