This book examines immigration to small cities throughout Canada.
It explores the distinct challenges brought about by the influx of
people to urban communities which typically have less than 100,000
residents. The essays are organized into four main sections:
partnerships, resources, and capacities; identities, belonging, and
social networks; health, politics, and diversity, and Francophone
minority communities. Taken together, they provide a comprehensive,
multi-disciplinary perspective on the contemporary realities of
immigration to small urban locations. Readers will discover how
different groups of migrants, immigrants, and Francophone
minorities confront systemic discrimination; how settlement
agencies and organizations develop unique strategies for
negotiating limited resources and embracing opportunities brought
about by changing demographics; and how small cities work hard to
develop inclusive communities and respond to social exclusions. In
addition, each essay includes a case study that highlights the
topic under discussion in a particular city or region, from
Brandon, Manitoba to the Thompson-Nicola Region in British
Columbia, from Peterborough, Ontario to the Niagara Region. As a
complement to metropolitan-based works on immigration in Canada,
this collection offers an important dimension in migration studies
that will be of interest to academics, researchers, as well as
policymakers and practitioners working on immigrant integration and
settlement.
Social work field education in Canada is in crisis. New
understanding and approaches are urgently needed. Innovative and
sustainable models need to be explored and adopted. As
professionals, social workers are expected to use research to
inform their practice and to contribute to the production of
research. Yet many social workers are reluctant to integrate
research into their practice and into field education.Transforming
Social Work Field Education encourages the adoption of research and
scholarship into the practice of social work, especially field
education. It offers current theoretical concepts and perspectives
that shape social work field education and provides case studies of
practice research grounded in the experiences of diverse
communities and countries. Highlighting cutting-edge research and
scholarship, each chapter addresses critical issues in social work
practice and their implications for field education. Bringing
together scholars at various stages of their careers, this book
fosters a meaningful dialogue on the dynamic, complex, and
multi-faceted nature of social work practice, research, and
innovation in the critical area of field education. A vivid and
original work, it stimulates interest and discussion on the
integration of research and scholarship in social work field
education in Canada and around the world. With contributions by:

The Social Protection Floor Initiative promotes universal access
to essential social transfers and services. Presently 80% of the
global population does not enjoy a set of social guarantees that
allows them to deal with life s risks such as unemployment, ill
health, and natural disasters. This book explores the importance
and necessity of social protection, including key concepts,
universal principles and human rights, the need for
context-specific policies, the role of adaptive climate change, and
country examples.Social protection refers to a set of essential
transfers, services and facilities that all citizens everywhere
should enjoy to ensure the realization of the rights embodied in
human rights treaties. The Social Protection Floor aims to
facilitate and accelerate the introduction or strengthening of
sustainable context-specific social protection systems.Experiences
from countries around the world that have implemented components of
the Social Protection Floor provide evidence of its feasibility,
affordability, and impact. The promise and success of social
protection is important for transformative change, social
inclusion, and alliance building, and raises critical questions
about current neoliberal austerity measures. This book calls for a
comprehensive, multi-dimensional, integrated and innovative policy
mix that recognizes the interdependency between demographic shifts,
employment, labour migration, social protection, economic
development, and the environment."
Social protection is now considered a development milestone and an
important tool in combating poverty. Interventions can include, for
example, health insurance, public works programs, guaranteed
employment schemes, or cash transfers targeting vulnerable
populations groups. This innovative volume is designed to develop
understanding about the role and contribution of social protection
globally and to share innovative practice and policies from around
the world. It explores how to cover an entire population
effectively, especially those who are at risk or who are already in
a situation of deprivation, and in a sustainable manner. Divided
into two parts, the book begins by exploring the theoretical
underpinnings of social protection, discussing the social work and
social development perspectives and concepts that currently shape
it. The second part is comprised of case studies from countries
implementing successful social protection initiatives, including
Brazil, India, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria and Indonesia, and
reveals how the impact of a successful social protection
intervention on poverty, vulnerability and inequality can be
dramatic. This volume is an important reference for advanced
students and researchers from a range of disciplines including
social policy, social work, development studies, geography,
planning, economics, sociology, population health and political
science.

Social workers are increasingly engaged in supporting individuals
and communities in long-term disaster recovery. Rebuilding Lives
Post-Disaster brings together an international team of social work
researchers who have investigated the experiences, perspectives,
challenges, and complexities in disaster recovery. It features
country case studies drawing from field research undertaken in
disaster-affected communities in Canada, the United States,
Australia, India, Pakistan, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, and China. In so
doing, the volume provides a comprehensive perspective on the
realities of disaster recovery and explores key concepts such as
resilience, community-based disaster risk reduction, and social and
gendered construction of vulnerability and capabilities.
Undergraduate and graduate students and professionals in the fields
of social work, community development, international social work,
emergency management, and related fields will find the text to be a
