Spanning her entire life, the fully annotated selections in this
volume include well known recollections of the great Victorian
novelist plus a large assortment not found in her biographies.
Altogether they provide a fresh, vivid, and sometimes startling
portrait of a controversial genius.
Recombinant viruses provide an efficient mechanism for the transfer
and expression of DNA in eukaryotic cells. First, the transfer of
DNA by viral infection-utilizing specific cell surface receptors
and cellular intern- ization mechanisms-occurs much more readily
than DNA transfer via uptake induced by such physical methods as
calcium phosphate coprecipitation or electroporation. Second, the
novel strategies employed by the virus to express its own genes can
then be "hijacked" in the recombinant virus to express the
researcher's gene of interest The purpose of Practical Molecular
Virology isthus to compile a coll- tion of readily repeatable gene
transfer and expression methods from wo- ers expert in the use of a
variety of recombinant viral vectors . These include those designed
for the production of recombinant antigens, such as pol- virus and
yeast Ty-VLPs; those giving very high levels of recombinant protein
expression, for example, baculovirus, vaccinia virus, and SV40; and
finally viral vectors used for efficient, stable gene transfer to
eu otic cells, such as retroviruses and herpesviruses . The first
chapter describes the viral life cycle for each virus, and explains
how this can be adapted to allow construction of recombinant
vectors. Subsequent chapters deal with methods for producing and
char- terizing recombinant viruses . I make no apology for the
hyperproliferation of chapters dealing with recombinant retroviral
methods and applications, since I believe this is clearly
proportional to the recent expansion of interest in these
techniques.
"31 Months in Japan--the Building of a Theme Park" is the story of
two Southern Californians embarking on the adventure of a
lifetime--moving to Japan to participate in the construction of the
Universal Studios Japan(R) theme park.
Join authors Larry K. & Lorna Collins on an odyssey into a
foreign culture where they are often misunderstood and frequently
confused. Discover the challenges and frustrations of building a
world-class entertainment venue outside the United States. Enjoy
the adventure as they discover the beauty and the people of Japan.
Share their laughter, tears, surprise and final triumph as the park
is completed ahead of schedule and under budget. Meet fascinating
characters like Jurassic Jack, the Nihon Cowboy and Dote-san
through their eyes.
"31 Months in Japan--the Building of a Theme Park" combines
interesting details and behind-the-scenes descriptions of how magic
is made in the entertainment industry with funny and touching
personal remembrances. The stories will be of particular interest
to those visiting or intending to live or work in Japan, people
doing business with the Japanese, theme park aficionados and anyone
with a sense of adventure.
This book provides a legal historical insight into colonial laws on
enslavement and the plantation system in the British West Indies.
The volume is a work of comparative legal history of the
English-speaking Caribbean which concentrates on how the laws of
England served to catalyse the slavery laws and also legislation
pertaining to post-emancipation societies. The book illustrates how
these âborrowedâ laws from England not only developed colonial
slavery laws within the English-speaking Caribbean but also
inspired the slavery codes of a number of North American plantation
systems. The cusp of the work focuses on the interconnectivities
among the English-speaking slave holding Atlantic and how persons,
free and unfree, moved throughout the system and brought laws with
them which greatly affected the various enslaved societies. The
book will be essential reading for students and researchers
interested in colonial slavery, Caribbean studies and Black and
Atlantic history.

Artificial Reefs in European Seas focuses on artificial reef
research in the Mediterranean and NE Atlantic. The book describes
most of the long-term projects running in European seas, presents
the legal and economic issues, and suggests future uses for
artificial reefs in the European context. Readership: Professionals
working on or interested in the uses of artificial reefs for
fishery management, coastal zone management, aquaculture and nature
conservation. The case studies of reef research programmes make the
book ideal for degree students studying topics in ecology, and
fisheries and coastal management.

Warrior Mother is the true story of a mother's fierce love and
determination, and her willingness to go outside the bounds of the
ordinary when two of her three adult children are diagnosed with
life-threatening diseases.
When Sheila Collins's best friend, dying of breast cancer, asked
her to accompany her through what turned out to be the last
fourteen days of her life, she didn't know that the experience was
preparing her for what lay ahead with her own children.
In the years that followed, Collins had to face both her son's
diagnosis with AIDS and her daughter's diagnosis with breast
cancer. Warrior Mother documents how she faces these challenges and
the issues accompanying them from learning to be the mother of a
gay son to visiting a healer in Brazil on her daughter's behalf
when she decides on bone marrow transplant treatment. Experience as
a professional social worker and family therapist doesn't always
help Collins to cope with her children's illnesses...
