This is the first book to provide assessments of multidecadal changes in resources and environments of the Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs) of the North Atlantic. Using the case study method, researchers examine the forces driving the changes and actions underway aimed at turning the corner from declining trends in biomass yields, toward recovery of depleted species populations and improvements in ecosystem integrity.
The future is uncertain for the world's large marine ecosystems. These relatively narrow ocean zones produce nearly 95% of useable marine biomass, yet are becoming increasingly stressed by both natural and anthropogenic changes. The potential for consequent negative effects on global ecologies and economies has aroused major international concern. This state-of-the-art update on Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs) represents a multidisciplinary effort to develop a more holistic approach to the research, monitoring, and management of marine resources. The contributors deal with the various environmental and human impacts of ocean productivity, providing scientific, legal and technological arguments for managing LMEs as multinational units in order to sustain the biomass yields of major coastal areas.
Coastal resources of developed and developing nations are being
adversely affected by human activities and environmental
degradation, and the fate of the Indian Ocean is no exception. In
an effort to improve the current state of this important large
marine ecosystem (LME) and to prevent future damage, a symposium on
the status and future of LMEs of the Indian Ocean was held in Kenya
by marine experts from the region. It was organized to review
results from various studies, including reports on the Somali
Current, the Agulhas Current, the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea,
and a number of other LMEs, representing contributions from 19
countries. The studies in this book were selected from among those
presented at the symposium and have been peer reviewed. In
addition, they have been augmented with a peer reviewed study
describing an innovative strategy for the assessment and management
of the Bay of Bengal ecosystem. This book is arranged into four sections: Assessment and
Sustainability of LMEs, Pelagic Ecosystems, Case Studies, and
Management and Governance: Assessment and Sustainability of LMEs: The first section
consists of descriptions of strategies for assessing ecosystem
change, including modules for productivity, fish and fisheries,
pollution and ecosystem health, socioeconomics, and
governance. Pelagic Ecosystems: Six chapters deal solely with the results of
assessments of the oceanography, productivity, plankton, and fishes
of the pelagic domains of the region. Case Studies: Encompassing a broad spectrum of LME-related
issues, an entire section (six chapters) of case studies has been
included to provide the reader with specific examples of
conditionswithin LMEs of the region. Management and Governance: This section focuses on the future of the region, and what needs to be done in order to support long term sustainability of costal resources.
Music and Maestros was first published in 1952. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Music lovers all over the United States as well as in other countries have heard the music of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra under the direction of such noted conductors as Dimitri Mitropoulos and Eugene Ormandy. Now they can enjoy the story behind those concerts, records, and radio broadcasts through this intimate history of the men and music that have made the orchestra famous. The story begins with the lively musical activities of a frontier town, the antecedents of the symphony orchestra that took shape at the turn of the century. From the early years of the organization under the batons of Emil Oberhoffer and Henri Verbrugghen, the chronicle rises to the period of the great contemporaries, Ormandy, Mitropoulos, and Antal Dorati. There is a wealth of detail on the career of Mitropoulos, the renowned New York Philharmonic conductor who reached his present stature during his leadership of the Minneapolis orchestra. The extensive concert tours that have earned for the Minneapolis symphony the nickname of "orchestra on wheels" are recalled in anecdotes that will evoke many a chuckle and plenty of amazement. Accounts of early recording sessions offer fascinating sidelights on this aspect of musical history. A complete list of the works performed by the orchestra during the past fifty years provides a significant record of changing trends in musical tastes. A roster of al the players who have been members of the orchestra is given, and the reference section also includes a complete list of out-of-town engagements and a list of the orchestra's recordings which are available.
