Neoliberalism: National and Regional Experiments with Global Ideas (Paperback): Ravi K. Roy, Arthur T. Denzau, Thomas D Willett Neoliberalism: National and Regional Experiments with Global Ideas (Paperback)
Ravi K. Roy, Arthur T. Denzau, Thomas D Willett; Preface by Eric Helleiner
R1,376 Discovery Miles 13 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Critics of globalization often portray neoliberalism as an extremist laissez-faire political-economic philosophy that rejects government any sort of government intervention in the domestic economy. Like most over-used terms, it is more complicated than this introductory sentence suggests. This volume seeks to move beyond these caricature depictions and definitions as well as the emotional rhetoric that has unfortunately dominated both the scholastic and political debate on neoliberalism and global market-oriented reform. This book emphasizes that there are in fact a variety of neoliberalisms that share a common emphasis on the role of the market. Beyond this however, its usages and applications appear much more varied according to the cultural, economic, political, and social context in which it is used.

A host of eminent contributors, including Douglass C. North, Arthur T. Denzau, Thomas D. Willett, Mark Blyth, Colin Hay, Craig Parsons, and others provide a rigorous assessment of the significance of neoliberal ideas on economic policy. Through their detailed international case studies the contributors to this book show how varied its impact has in fact been and the result is a book that will stimulate further debate in this most controversial of subject matters.

Ravi K. Roy is a Research Scholar at the Claremont Institute for Economic Policy Studies. Arthur T. Denzau is Professor of Economics at Claremont Graduate University. He is also a Research Associate at the Center for American Business at Washington University (St. Louis).Thomas D. Willett is Horton Professor of Economics at Claremont Graduate University. Lie Algebraic Methods in Integrable Systems (Paperback): Amit K. Roy-chowdhury Lie Algebraic Methods in Integrable Systems (Paperback)
Amit K. Roy-chowdhury
R4,566 Discovery Miles 45 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the last thirty years, the subject of nonlinear integrable systems has grown into a full-fledged research topic. In the last decade, Lie algebraic methods have grown in importance to various fields of theoretical research and worked to establish close relations between apparently unrelated systems. The various ideas associated with Lie algebra and Lie groups can be used to form a particularly elegant approach to the properties of nonlinear systems. In this volume, the author exposes the basic techniques of using Lie algebraic concepts to explore the domain of nonlinear integrable systems. His emphasis is not on developing a rigorous mathematical basis, but on using Lie algebraic methods as an effective tool. The book begins by establishing a practical basis in Lie algebra, including discussions of structure Lie, loop, and Virasor groups, quantum tori and Kac-Moody algebras, and gradation. It then offers a detailed discussion of prolongation structure and its representation theory, the orbit approach-for both finite and infinite dimension Lie algebra. The author also presents the modern approach to symmetries of integrable systems, including important new ideas in symmetry analysis, such as gauge transformations, and the "soldering" approach. He then moves to Hamiltonian structure, where he presents the Drinfeld-Sokolov approach, the Lie algebraic approach, Kupershmidt's approach, Hamiltonian reductions and the Gelfand Dikii formula. He concludes his treatment of Lie algebraic methods with a discussion of the classical r-matrix, its use, and its relations to double Lie algebra and the KP equation.

Arthur T. Denzau, Ravi K. Roy
R1,346 Discovery Miles 13 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The elections of Bill Clinton and Tony Blair in the 1990s saw the consolidation and completion of critical aspects of the Reagan-Thatcher fiscal agenda. This impressive book critically analyzes this process. It has been previously thought that this process of adopting common fiscal policies was caused by economic integration and globalization, Fiscal Policy From Reagan to Blair reveals a much more comprehensive explanation - one that includes domestic factors. Whether fiscal policy conversion is seen as a good or a bad thing, this book shall unite both left and right in better explaining the process. Students and academics of international political economy, public policy and politics will find this book to be a good addition to their reading lists.

K.Roy MacKenzie
R2,012 Discovery Miles 20 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Introduction to Time-Limited Group Psychotherapy" is a basic text designed for the clinician who already has experience in individual psychotherapy. However, the breadth of perspective and discussion of therapeutic strategies should be of value to the more experienced psychotherapist as well.

The book is divided into four sections. "Section One" deals with basic concepts regarding the small group. This section should aid the therapist in accurately recognizing group phenomena. "Section Two" presents the applications of the theories concerning time-limited group psychotherapy in a clinical setting. It emphasizes the importance of careful diagnostic and interpersonal assessment, group composition considerations, and pretherapy preparation in ensuring that a sense of & ldquo;groupness& rdquo; will emerge promptly.

"Section Three" shows how to use the emerging relationships among group members as the vehicle to manage individual issues. In both Sections Two and Three, the current literature concerning brief individual therapy is applied to the group context. "Section Four" offers guidelines for integrating group psychotherapy into service and training programs. Special consideration is given to inpatient groups and long-term support groups.

Gene Regulation by Steroid Hormones III (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987): Arun K. Roy, James H. Clark Gene Regulation by Steroid Hormones III (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987)

R4,234 Discovery Miles 42 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The field of steroid hormone action has continued to expand into the realm of molecular biology at a pace even faster than most of us ever imagined. techniques of molecular biology have made it possible to clone The hormone-regulated genes and to examine steroid-receptor interactions with these genes. Nucleotide sequences of these genes, which show preferential binding of steroid receptors, have been identified. These results are complemented by the identification of chromatin acceptor proteins, which also show preferential binding for steroid-receptor complexes. Thus, one can envision the day when cloned genes, purified acceptor proteins, and receptor-steroid complexes will be recombined in vitro to form a functional unit. Cellular localization of steroid receptors has undergone recent revision, and it now appears that receptors are localized primarily in the nuclear compartment. These findings, although controversial, will lead to a reassessment of many of the previous concepts of steroid-receptor interactions and regulation. The way in which these observations at the of physiology, molecular and cellular levels fit into the overall scheme development, and evolution are continuing to progress, and the future promises some very exciting syntheses of understanding at all levels of biological organization. The third Meadow Brook Conference on hormones was held in order to bring together investigators who will undoubtedly contribute heavily to this future synthesis and to permit a free exchange of ideas and concepts as they relate to the current state-of-the-art in molecular endocrinology.
