In business it is often necessary to apply a mathematical framework
in order to solve everyday problems. This text takes a problem- and
context-driven approach with the mathematics introduced only on a
need-to-know basis. Care is taken not to overwhelm the student with
mathematical techniques but to relate these techniques to specific
business areas. The only exception to this form of presentation
will be in the first two chapters where the elementary basics of
arithmetic and algebra are displayed - albeit here, within
financial and commercial contexts as well.

The science (or even the art ) of instrumentation is of fundamental
import ance to engineers, scientists and medical workers.
Instruments are the eyes and ears of the technologist. (His nose is
reserved for detecting the effects of excess current. ) Without
sensors and their associated signal processing systems there would
be no modern transport, no National Grid distributing electricity,
and anyone unlucky enough to fall ill would be offered only the
most primitive medical treatment. The progress that has been made
in almost all areas of technology can be seen in terms of the rate
at which the necessary instrumentation has been developed. For
example, in recent years many improvements have been made to the
performance of the internal combus tion engine. More and more power
has been squeezed out of smaller and more economic engines. One of
the reasons is that in the last few years sensors have been
developed which allow investigations to be made of the way in which
the flame front spreads inside a cylinder after ignition. This work
has led to a redesign of the geometry of the inlet valves and the
piston, and more efficient engines are the result. The process of
instrumentation is often considered solely in terms of the sensors
used and their associated electronics. However, there are two steps
involved in making any measurement. These are, first, getting the
data, which is where sensors and electronics are used, and second,
analysing it."
The environment in which arts organisations function has changed
dramatically in the 29 years since the first National Endowment for
the Arts (NEA) Survey of Public Participation in the Arts (SPPA).
Alternatives for arts and entertainment activities have
proliferated, and expectations for personalisation and individual
control over those experiences have increased. The proliferation of
new technologies for interacting with digital content is occurring
at a heightened pace, while the nation's demographic
characteristics grow increasingly diverse. This book provides an
overview of the SPPA, which was first conducted in 1982, and serves
as the longest-standing resource for studying U.S. adult levels of
arts attendance, personal arts creation and performance, and arts
participation through electronic media.
This is an introductory text intended to give the newcomer to this area a comprehensive insight into the science of biotransformations. The book traces the history of biotransformations, clearly spells out the pros and cons of conducting enzyme-mediated versus whole-cell bioconversions, and gives a variety of examples wherein the bio-reaction is a key element in a reaction sequence leading from cheap starting materials to valuable end-products (such as pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, fragrances and flavors). The authors cover biotransformations involving the hydrolysis of esters, amides and nitriles, the synthesis of esters and amides, reduction and oxidation reactions and carbon-carbon bond-forming systems. The book finishes with a discussion of some industrially important large-scale bioconversions. The text will be suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals in the areas of biochemistry, organic chemistry, biotechnology, microbiology, and industrial chemistry.

A brilliant, poetic, master of fantastic symbolism and emotional
portraiture, John Crowley is one of the finest contemporary
American novelists. As Harold Bloom writes in his Preface to this
book, Crowley writes so magnificently that only a handful of living
writers can equal him as a stylist. Of novelists, only Philip Roth
consistently writes on Crowley's level. Engine Summer; Little, Big;
Egypt; Great Work of Time; The Translator; these are only the
highlights of a twenty-five year literary career of extraordinary
depth and eloquence. Yet Crowley has not been the subject of a
full-length critical study until now; Snake's-Hands, remedies this
lack, in full. In Snake's-Hands, Alice K. Turner and Michael
Andre-Driussi assemble a host of brilliant essays on the fiction of
John Crowley, by such eminent writers and critics as John Clute,
Thomas M. Disch, James Hynes, Brian Attebery, and Bill Sheehan.
Explore with them Crowley's fantasticated retellings of the Hundred
Years' War, and of innumerable beast fables; his subtle rendering
of the bucolic decline of Earth; his astonishing, multi-leveled
vision of the fairylands deep within mundane reality; his British
