Ben Williamson, Janja Komljenovic, Kalervo Gulson
R4,139 Discovery Miles 41 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Providing a comprehensive, global overview of the digitalization of education, the World Yearbook of Education 2024 examines the ways advanced digital technologies are transforming educational practices, institutions, and policy processes. Establishing a critical research agenda for analysing the digitalisation of education, the carefully selected chapters in this collection interrogate the current impacts of new digital technologies, emerging controversies over emerging data practices, and future implications of algorithmic systems, automated decision making, and AI in education. Organized into four sections, the contributions in the collection examine: The historical, scientific and technical foundations of contemporary digitalisation in education The political and economic dynamics that underpin the education technology industry and new platform models of education How algorithms, automation and AI support new modes of data-driven governance and control of education systems Controversies over the inequitable effects of digitalisation in education, and proposals for data justice, ethics and regulation This resource is ideal reading for researchers, students, educational practitioners and policy officials interested in understanding future of digital technologies in education.

Education Policy Analysis for a Complex World - Poststructural possibilities (Paperback): Kalervo Gulson, Amy Metcalfe Education Policy Analysis for a Complex World - Poststructural possibilities (Paperback)
Kalervo Gulson, Amy Metcalfe
R1,383 Discovery Miles 13 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the past decade, poststructural policy analysis in education has evolved, primarily focusing on disrupting dominant narratives about education policy research, development and implementation, and the aims and outcomes of the policy-research nexus. This book originates from an 'Education Policy Analysis for a Complex World' workshop held in conjunction with the University of British Columbia and sponsored by a Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Connection Grant. The workshop focused on one over-arching question: To what extent can poststructural theories offer innovative policy analyses, and contribute to new forms of policy development and implementation? The chapters in this collection provide responses from the participants of the workshop, and serve as illustrations of the broad range of scholarship that may be identified as poststructural policy analysis. This book was originally published as a special issue of Critical Studies in Education.

The Edge of Race - Critical examinations of education and race/racism (Paperback): Kalervo Gulson, Zeus Leonardo, David Gillborn The Edge of Race - Critical examinations of education and race/racism (Paperback)
Kalervo Gulson, Zeus Leonardo, David Gillborn
R1,493 Discovery Miles 14 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The phrase 'the edge of race' can be used both as a description and as a response to two key concerns. The first of these is that while race is increasingly on the periphery of education policy - with a growing disregard shown for racist inequities, as education systems become dominated by market-driven concerns - it is important that we map the shifting relations of race in neoliberal politics and policies. The second concern is that at this time, within and outside the spaces of the academy, even to mention race equity is to risk condemnation, marginalization, and ridicule. The authors in this collection use 'the edge of race' as a provocation in order to examine the concepts, methodologies, policies, politics, processes, and practices associated with race and racism in education. The chapters offer empirical examples of the perpetuation and perniciousness of racism that point to the continued salience of research about race. Additionally, the chapters make contributions to conceptual and methodological understandings of race and racism. The contributors illustrate the contingency, productivity, and fragility of race as a concept, and point to how educational research continues to be a contested site in, and from which to study, race and education. This book was originally published as a special issue of Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education.
