Karl Brunners AAltenglische GrammatikA ist eine Neufassung der AAngelsAchsischen GrammatikA von Eduard Sievers. Sie erschien zum ersten Mal 1942 und fand sogleich allgemeine Zustimmung. Plan und Aufbau des Werkes haben sich bewAhrt, sie sind darum auch in der dritten Auflage gleich geblieben. Im einzelnen bringt diese jedoch zahlreiche A"nderungen und Verbesserungen, in denen auch neuere Forschungsergebnisse ausgewertet werden.

Das Werk bringt eine umfassende Geschichte der englischen Sprache von den AnfAngen bis zur Gegenwart einschlieAlich der auAerbritischen Varianten und verbindet die Darstellung von externer Geschichte mit internen grammatischen VerAnderungen. Der erste Band enthAlt eine ausfA1/4hrliche Darstellung der AuAeren Geschichte, wobei vor allem die EinflA1/4sse nicht-englischer Sprachen auf die Entwicklung des Englischen hervorgehoben werden. AuAerdem wird die Entstehung der verschiedenen nicht-britischen Varianten in Aoebersee behandelt. Der zweite Teil dieses Bandes ist der englischen Lautgeschichte gewidmet.
