Who was Shakespeare? A minimally educated actor who happened to write the most celebrated works of the English language, or someone else? Don't the Shakespeare plays test your mind and lift your soul regardless of who wrote them? Of course, but Shakespeare's works present an entirely different meaning and challenge when the interpretations stem from the inventiveness and personal biography of Sir Francis Bacon, a Peer of the Realm, scientist, mystic and statesman. The sergeant lowers the chest to Joshua, who has gone down the hole. The sergeant pulls the rope up, intending to strand Joshua, letting him die of thirst. However, Joshua manages to escape. That night Joshua smashes in the head of the sergeant while he slept. Returning to his unit, Joshua participates in the Battle of Munfordville. He participates in the Union's advance into the south, and three years later in Atlanta is discharged. His struggle between enjoying the hidden wealth and his remorse in being a murderer and thief leads to his redemption and, seventy-three years later, explains the mysterious disappearance of David's aunt and uncle.
