Abbas Khider (Paperback, New edition): David N. Coury, Karolin Machtans Abbas Khider (Paperback, New edition)
David N. Coury, Karolin Machtans
R1,333 Discovery Miles 13 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Abbas Khider (b. 1973) has established himself as one of the leading literary voices of refugees and marginalised communities in Germany today. Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Khider was at a young age a vocal critic of Saddam Hussein's regime, during which he was jailed and tortured before fleeing the country. As a refugee, he crossed many countries before arriving in Germany, where he was eventually granted asylum. His own life experiences have served as a departure point for his novels, which similarly explore the refugee experience and the challenges that migrants to Europe face. This volume represents the first collection of essays devoted to Khider's works to date. The contributions analyse his narrative works and probe important questions relating to political, cultural, and linguistic identity in Germany today. While his works explore what it means to be an immigrant, they do so with a wry sense of humour and an insight into the human condition that also reflect on the political situation in Germany today. His award-winning novels, including Der falsche Inder (2008, The Village Indian, 2013) and Ohrfeige (2016, A Slap in the Face, 2019), which have been translated into English, are discussed in detail. Additionally, an original interview with the author offers insight into his writing process and influences.

Navid Kermani (Paperback, New edition): Helga Druxes, Karolin Machtans, Alexandar Mihailovic Navid Kermani (Paperback, New edition)
Helga Druxes, Karolin Machtans, Alexandar Mihailovic
R1,602 Discovery Miles 16 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Navid Kermani - author, journalist and academic - is one of the most prominent public intellectuals in Germany today. Kermani has been at the forefront of recent debates about Islam and its role in Germany's political, social and cultural life. Instead of emphasizing the differences between ethnic affiliations and religious beliefs, Kermani questions the Western notion of a clear dividing line between Islam, Christianity and Judaism, highlighting instead their affinities. In addition to his political essays, Kermani's travel journalism introduces western audiences to diverse Muslim societies in the world and his fiction provides accessible meditations on first love, contemporary music, death and friendship. This is the first volume of criticism in English dedicated to Kermani's varied work. The book features an extensive interview with the author, a reproduction in German and English of Kermani's famous 2014 Bundestag speech and a collection of critical essays on Kermani's writing. The essays, by major scholars in the field, cover issues such as gender, religion, cosmopolitanism, mystical experiences, and the power of the liberal arts in a time of neoliberal distraction.

Envisioning Social Justice in Contemporary German Culture (Hardcover): Jill Twark, Axel Hildebrandt Envisioning Social Justice in Contemporary German Culture (Hardcover)
Jill Twark, Axel Hildebrandt; Contributions by Alexandra Simon-Lopez, Axel Hildebrandt, Bastian Heinsohn, …
R2,645 Discovery Miles 26 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Explores how contemporary German-language literary, dramatic, filmic, musical, and street artists are grappling in their works with social-justice issues that affect Germany and the wider world. Social-injustice dilemmas such as poverty, unemployment, and racism are subjects of continuing debate in European societies and in Germany in particular, as solutions are difficult and progress often comes slowly. Such discussionsare not limited to opposing newspaper editorials, position papers, or legislative forums, however; creative works expound on these topics as well, but their contributions to the debate are often marginalized. This collectionof new essays explores how contemporary German-language literary, dramatic, filmic, musical, and street artists are grappling with social-justice issues that affect Germany and the wider world, surveying more than a decade's worth of works of German literature and art in light of the recent paradigm shift in cultural criticism called the "ethical turn." Central themes include the legacy of the politically engaged 1968 generation, eastern Germany and the process of unification, widening economic disparity as a result of political policies and recession, and problems of integration and inclusivity for ethnic and religious minorities as migration to Germany has increased. Contributors: Monika Albrecht, Olaf Berwald, Robert Blankenship, Laurel Cohen-Pfister, Jack Davis, Bastian Heinsohn, Axel Hildebrandt, Deborah Janson, Karolin Machtans, Ralf Remshardt, Alexandra Simon-Lopez, Patricia Anne Simpson,Maria Stehle, Jill E. Twark. Jill E. Twark is Associate Professor of German at East Carolina University. Axel Hildebrandt is Associate Professor of German at Moravian College.

Karolin Machtans; Foreword by Alon Confino
R3,968 Discovery Miles 39 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The volume examines the autobiographical texts by Saul FriedlAnder and Ruth KlA1/4ger in the context of their academic work. Both their scholarly and their autobiographical work are subjected to the tension between the opposing poles on the one hand of wishing to approach a reality outside the text and on the other of being aware that every interpretation always depends on the contemporary context and personal background of the interpreter. Thus FriedlAnder and KlA1/4ger approach each other from the two poles of disciplines traditionally opposed to each othera ' the study of history, directed towards a ~objectivea (TM) verifiable facts, and the study of literature, with its focus on engagement with fiction.
