HE'S GOT TIME TO CHILL! With his friend Ghozal in danger, Flio calls upon the forbidden time-manipulation magic he once used to save Rys. Even as a voice of warning calls out to him from the Celestial Plane, Flio makes the perhaps fatal decision to protect the peace he's built for his friends. But it's not all gloom and doom for Flio and Rys! At last, their mercantile dreams come true as the store opens for business—offering service with a smile to all, even as the conflict between humanity and demonkind grows ever more bitter. Could Flio's new store be the starting grounds for reconciliation? Will his extraordinary powers finally bring him the ordinary life he craves?

Hiroshi Hosaka, Yoshitada Katagiri, Terunao Hirota, Kiyoshi Itao
R6,550 Discovery Miles 65 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Micro-Optomechatronics systematically explains the devices based upon the fusion of optics, electronics, and mechanics via MEMS technology. The book first demonstrates how devices are classified based upon the control methods of power and position of the laser beam. It then describes the devices in detail according to the classification of control methods. Positional control is classified as intermittent control, constant velocity control, and follow-up control. The volume concludes with an explanation of the optics and dynamics which provide the theoretical background of control methods, and an overview of the influence of nano-technology and near field optical memory.

Fuzzy Stochastic Multiobjective Programming (Paperback, 2011 ed.): Masatoshi Sakawa, Ichiro Nishizaki, Hideki Katagiri Fuzzy Stochastic Multiobjective Programming (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
Masatoshi Sakawa, Ichiro Nishizaki, Hideki Katagiri
R2,952 Discovery Miles 29 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although studies on multiobjective mathematical programming under uncertainty have been accumulated and several books on multiobjective mathematical programming under uncertainty have been published (e.g., Stancu-Minasian (1984); Slowinski and Teghem (1990); Sakawa (1993); Lai and Hwang (1994); Sakawa (2000)), there seems to be no book which concerns both randomness of events related to environments and fuzziness of human judgments simultaneously in multiobjective decision making problems. In this book, the authors are concerned with introducing the latest advances in the field of multiobjective optimization under both fuzziness and randomness on the basis of the authors' continuing research works. Special stress is placed on interactive decision making aspects of fuzzy stochastic multiobjective programming for human-centered systems under uncertainty in most realistic situations when dealing with both fuzziness and randomness. Organization of each chapter is briefly summarized as follows: Chapter 2 is devoted to mathematical preliminaries, which will be used throughout the remainder of the book. Starting with basic notions and methods of multiobjective programming, interactive fuzzy multiobjective programming as well as fuzzy multiobjective programming is outlined. In Chapter 3, by considering the imprecision of decision maker's (DM's) judgment for stochastic objective functions and/or constraints in multiobjective problems, fuzzy multiobjective stochastic programming is developed. In Chapter 4, through the consideration of not only the randomness of parameters involved in objective functions and/or constraints but also the experts' ambiguous understanding of the realized values of the random parameters, multiobjective programming problems with fuzzy random variables are formulated. In Chapter 5, for resolving conflict of decision making problems in hierarchical managerial or public organizations where there exist two DMs who have different priorities in making decisions, two-level programming problems are discussed. Finally, Chapter 6 outlines some future research directions.

Yasuhiro Katagiri
R1,341 Discovery Miles 13 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Black Freedom, White Resistance, and Red Menace, Yasuhiro Katagiri offers the first scholarly work to illuminate an important but largely unstudied aspect of U.S. civil rights history -- the collaborative and mutually beneficial relationship between professional anti-Communists in the North and segregationist politicians in the South.

In 1954, the Supreme Court outlawed racial segregation in public schools with the Brown v. Board of Education ruling. Soon after -- while the political demise of U.S. senator Joseph R. McCarthy unfolded -- northern anti-Communists looked to the South as a promising new territory in which they could expand their support base and continue their cause. Southern segregationists embraced the assistance, and the methods, of these Yankee collaborators, and utilized the "northern messiahs" in executing a massive resistance to the Supreme Court's desegregation decrees and the civil rights movement in general. Southern white leadership framed black southerners' crusades for social justice and human dignity as a foreign scheme directed by nefarious outside agitators, "race-mixers," and, worse, outright subversives and card-carrying Communists.

Based on years of extensive archival research, Black Freedom, White Resistance, and Red Menace explains how a southern version of McCarthyism became part of the opposition to the civil rights movement in the South, an analysis that leads us to a deeper understanding and appreciation for what the freedom movement -- and those who struggled for equality -- fought to overcome.

Adapting to Win - How Insurgents Fight and Defeat Foreign States in War (Hardcover): Noriyuki Katagiri Adapting to Win - How Insurgents Fight and Defeat Foreign States in War (Hardcover)
Noriyuki Katagiri
R2,029 Discovery Miles 20 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When insurgent groups challenge powerful states, defeat is not always inevitable. Increasingly, guerrilla forces have overcome enormous disadvantages and succeeded in extending the period of violent conflict, raising the costs of war, and occasionally winning. Noriyuki Katagiri investigates the circumstances and tactics that allow some insurgencies to succeed in wars against foreign governments while others fail."Adapting to Win" examines almost 150 instances of violent insurgencies pitted against state powers, including in-depth case studies of the war in Afghanistan and the 2003 Iraq war. By applying sequencing theory, Katagiri provides insights into guerrilla operations ranging from Somalia to Benin and Indochina, demonstrating how some insurgents learn and change in response to shifting circumstances. Ultimately, his research shows that successful insurgent groups have evolved into mature armed forces, and then demonstrates what evolutionary paths are likely to be successful or unsuccessful for those organizations. "Adapting to Win" will interest scholars of international relations, security studies, and third world politics and contains implications for government officials, military officers, and strategic thinkers around the globe as they grapple with how to cope with tenacious and violent insurgent organizations.

Marvin Cassman, Adam Arkin, Frank Doyle, Fumiaki Katagiri, Douglas Lauffenburger, …
R2,998 Discovery Miles 29 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Systems biology is defined for the purpose of this study as the understanding of biological network behaviors, and in particular their dynamic aspects, which requires the utilization of mathematical modeling tightly linked to experiment. This involves a variety of approaches, such as the identification and validation of networks, the creation of appropriate datasets, the development of tools for data acquisition and software development, and the use of modeling and simulation software in close linkage with experiment. All of these are discussed in this volume. Of course, the definition becomes ambiguous at the margins, but at the core is the focus on networks, which makes it clear that the goal is to understand the operation of the systems, rather than the component parts. It was concluded that the U.S. is currently ahead of the rest of the world in systems biology, largely because of earlier investment by funding organizations and research institutions.

Each Moment Is the Universe - Zen and the Way of Being Time (Paperback): Dainin Katagiri Each Moment Is the Universe - Zen and the Way of Being Time (Paperback)
Dainin Katagiri 1
R517 Discovery Miles 5 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

It's easy to regard time as a commodity--we even speak of "saving" or "spending" it. We often regard it as an enemy, when we feel it slipping away before we're ready for time to be up. The Zen view of time is radically different than that: time is not something separate from our life; rather, our life "is" time. Understand this, says Dainin Katagiri Roshi, and you can live fully and freely right where you are in each moment.
Katagiri bases his teaching on "Being Time," a text by the most famous of all Zen masters, Eihei Dogen (1200-1253), to show that time is a creative, dynamic process that continuously produces the universe and everything in it--and that to understand this is to discover a gateway to freedom from the dissatisfactions of everyday life. He guides us in contemplating impermanence, the present moment, and the ungraspable nature of past and future. He discusses time as part of our inner being, made manifest through constant change in ourselves and our surroundings. And these ideas are by no means metaphysical abstractions: they can be directly perceived by any of us through meditation.

Dainin Katagiri (1928-1990) was a central figure in the transmission of Zen in America. His first book, "Returning to Silence, " emphasized the need to return to our original, enlightened state of being, and became one of the classics of Zen in America. In "You Have to Say Something, " selections from his talks have been collected to address another key theme of Katagiri's teaching: that of bringing Zen insight to bear on our everyday experience. "To live life fully," Katagiri says, "means to take care of your life day by day, moment to moment, right here, right now." To do this, he teaches, we must plunge into our life completely, bringing to it the same wholeheartedness that is required in Zen meditation. When we approach life in this way, every activity--everything we do, everything we say--becomes an opportunity for manifesting our own innate wisdom. With extraordinary freshness and immediacy, Katagiri shows the reader how this wisdom not only enlivens our spiritual practice but can help make our life a rich, seamless whole.

Situation theory is the result of an interdisciplinary effort to create a full-fledged theory of information. Created by scholars and scientists from cognitive science, computer science and AI, linguistics, logic, philosophy, and mathematics, it aims to provide a common set of tools for the analysis of phenomena from all these fields. Unlike Shannon-Weaver type theories of information, which are purely quantitative theories, situation theory aims at providing tools for the analysis of the specific content of a situation (signal, message, data base, statement, or other information-carrying situation). The question addressed is not how much information is carried, but what information is carried.

Dainin Katagiri
R554 Discovery Miles 5 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For twenty-five hundred years Buddhism has taught that everyone is Buddha--already enlightened, lacking nothing. But still there is the question of how we can experience that truth in our lives. In this book, Dainin Katagiri points to the manifestation of enlightenment right here, right now, in our everyday routine. Genuineness of practice lies in "just living" our lives wholeheartedly. The Zen practice of sitting meditation "(zazen) "is this not a means to an end but is the activity of enlightenment itself. That is why Katagiri Roshi says, "Don't expect enlightenment--just sit down "
Based on the author's talks to his American students, "Returning to Silence " contains the basic teachings of the Buddha, with special emphasis on the meaning of faith and on meditation. It also offers a commentary on "The Bodhisattva's Four Methods of Guidance" from Dogen Zenji's "Shobogenzo, "which speaks in depth about the appropriate actions of those who guide others in the practice of the Buddha Way. Throughout these pages, Katagiri Roshi energetically brings to life the message that "Buddha is your daily life."
