Rob Marshall directs this big-budget musical based on the classic
Fellini film 8 1/2. Set in early 1960s Venice, the film follows
famous film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he
struggles to complete his latest project on the eve of his 40th
birthday. Meanwhile, he must also juggle the various colourful
women in his life: his wife Luisa (Marion Cotillard), his mistress
Carla (Penelope Cruz), his muse Claudia (Nicole Kidman), his
producer Liliane (Judi Dench), his mother (Sophia Loren) and even a
prostitute who resurfaces from the depths of his past (Stacy
Ferguson). Kate Hudson co-stars as the American journalist who
interviews him about his life and work.
Dane Cook stars in this romantic comedy as Tank, a womanising
dirtbag who regularly hires himself out to perform an unusual
service: he takes jilted guys' ex-girlfriends out on such awful
dates that the girls quickly realise what they have given up and go
rushing back to fix things up with their former partners. Tank is
put to the ultimate test when his best friend Dustin (Jason Biggs)
asks him to carry out this hitherto successful procedure with his
beautiful ex-girlfriend Alexis (Kate Hudson). However, things get
messy when Tank finds himself falling for Alexis in a big way...
Two centuries ago Weston-super-Mare was a small, rarely visited
village but its location alongside the Severn Estuary soon made it
a convenient bathing place for the wealthy inhabitants of Bristol
and Bath. Once the railway arrived in 1841, the handful of brave
sea bathers became thousands of day trippers in search of fun and
sunshine. Weston also became popular with excursionists and
holidaymakers arriving by steamer from South Wales. To cater for
all these visitors, the small entertainment and bathing facilities
enjoyed by the wealthy Georgian elite were replaced by larger, more
popular facilities, including two piers, Winter Gardens, a large
swimming bath and a substantial open-air pool. Weston is not only a
busy seaside resort, but a popular place to live. During the 19th
century its population rose from around 100 to almost 20,000 and
its handful of small, fisherman's cottages became a sea of
terraces, crescents and villas constructed using the local stone. A
distinctive type of villa emerged in Weston, different from those
found at either of its larger neighbours. This was in large part
due to Hans Fowler Price, the town's leading architect for more
than half a century from 1860 until his death in 1912. The book
celebrates the complex history and colourful heritage of the town.
It also looks to the future to examine how its 200-year story might
contribute to a prosperous future.
This book provides a revisionist history of the rise and fall of
Yugoslavia. Assessing the geo-political and geo-strategic reasons
for its creation and dismemberment, it is an important corrective
to much contemporary theorising about the destruction of the
Yugoslav state. In particular Kate Hudson draws attention to the
role of foreign states whose involvement in Yugoslavia did much to
destabilise the region, and explains how and why this happened.
Tracing the state's origins from 1918 through war and the Tito
years, she explains the distortion of the socialist economy
resulting from Yugoslavia's unusual position between the two Cold
War blocs, and the economic collapse of the 1980s as part of the
US's drive for a free market. She also investigates the true causes
and effects of the recent wars in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo and
brings the book up-to-date with an analysis of Milosevic's
downfall, and events in Macedonia and Montenegro. 'has the
potential to reopen the debate over the collapse of Yugoslavia,
thus establishing the title as an original contribution to the
ongoing discussion on the Balkans ...a very valuable addition'
