Accounts for Solicitors is a practical introduction to a subject
that all practising solicitors need to understand. The text is
divided into two parts: the first explains fundamental accounting
concepts to allow students to read and interpret end of year
accounts; the second deals with the accounts of solicitors and, in
particular, the need to account for a clients money. Written in
simple, non-technical language, Accounts for Solicitors provides a
clear and comprehensive introduction to this complex subject with
worked examples, self-test sections and key learning points at the
end of each chapter to help illustrate and reinforce the
unfamiliar, and often difficult, concepts involved. Part II of the
book has been updated to take account of further guidance from the
SRA on the SRA Accounts Rules 2019 and incorporates Law Society
guidance on the VAT treatment of disbursements.

'A truly transformative read' Sunday Times STYLE 'More than ever,

Wabi sabi ("wah-bi sah-bi") is a captivating concept from Japanese
aesthetics, which helps us to see beauty in imperfection,
appreciate simplicity and accept the transient nature of all
things. With roots in zen and the way of tea, the timeless wisdom
of wabi sabi is more relevant than ever for modern life, as we
search for new ways to approach life's challenges and seek meaning
beyond materialism. Wabi sabi is a refreshing antidote to our
fast-paced, consumption-driven world, which will encourage you to
slow down, reconnect with nature, and be gentler on yourself. It
will help you simplify everything, and concentrate on what really
matters. From honouring the rhythm of the seasons to creating a
welcoming home, from reframing failure to ageing with grace, wabi
sabi will teach you to find more joy and inspiration throughout
your perfectly imperfect life. This book is the definitive guide to
applying the principles of wabi sabi to transform every area of
your life, and finding happiness right where you are.
This is a book about Christmas. But it's also a book about
belonging, connection, self-care, joy and ordinary magic. Calm
Christmas and a Happy New Year offers inspiration for a new kind of
holiday season - one where you radiate calm and cultivate delight.
Spanning late November to early January, Calm Christmas embraces
the festive build-up, the celebrations and the turn of the year in
a holistic, nurturing way. Beth Kempton will whisk you away from
the frenetic energy of the high street and invite you to come sit
awhile by the fire, pausing to explore what a more mindful festive
season could mean for you. Full of personal stories, tips and
advice for slowing down, staying calm and connecting with others,
it offers a welcome retreat from the pressure to create 'the
perfect Christmas'. At its heart Calm Christmas is about a book
about wellbeing in winter, which will encourage you to use this
time of natural hibernation to germinate new dreams and nurture a
beautiful life in the year ahead. Instead of entering January
exhausted, further in debt, and already regretting broken
resolutions, you will begin the New Year with precious memories,
feeling rested, rejuvenated and inspired. This atmospheric book
will lead you through the darkness of winter, back to the
enchantment of an authentic and meaningful Christmas and New Year.
'This book provides a welcome and highly relevant analysis of civic
universities-academic institutions with particularly strong ties to
their cities and regions in terms of research, teaching and civic
engagement. These universities are especially relevant in the 21st
century, and often forgotten by analysts and policy makers alike
who are too busy chasing rankings. The conceptual framework as well
as the case studies included in this book are equally valuable.' -
Philip Altbach, Boston College By exploring a normative model of
universities as institutions with a responsibility to contribute to
the public good, this book addresses the leadership, management and
public policy challenges of maximizing higher education's
contribution to civil society. It codifies the extensive academic
literature in this field and reviews higher education and other
public policies that both drive and inhibit civic engagement both
globally and locally. Comparing experiences and reports of an
institutional developmental process undertaken in eight distinctive
universities in four European countries and guided by the editors
the book explores key questions such as: what is the Civic
University, and how can we use this concept to understand higher
education's engagement with the outside world in varying
institutional and geographical contexts? What are the appropriate
internal structures and mechanisms required for a university to
effectively encourage and support civic engagement activity for the
greatest societal impact? How can embedding civic engagement in
individual institutions and wider systems be facilitated by changes
in higher education and related policies at the sub-national,
national and European level? Succinct and discerning, The Civic
University will be of great interest to academics working in the
fields of higher education, science and innovation studies and
community and city development. It will also appeal to university
leaders and organisers of institutional leadership development
programmes along with city leaders and policy makers at national
and international levels.

The International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic
Studies (CIHEAM), established in 1962, is an intergovernmental
organization of four teen countries: Albania, Algeria, Egypt,
France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Spain,
Tunisia, Turkey and Yugoslavia. Four institutes (Bari, Italy;
Chania, Greece; Montpellier, France and Zaragoza, Spain) provide
post-graduate education at the Master of Science level. CIHEAM
promotes research networks on Mediterranean agricultural
priorities, supports the organization of specialized education in
member countries, holds seminars and workshops bringing together
technologists and scientists involved in Mediterranean agriculture
and regularly produces diverse publications including the series
'Options Mediterraneennes'. Through these activities, CIHEAM
promotes North/South dialogue and international co-operation for
agricultural development in the Mediterranean region. Plant
breeding is, since 1982, one of the fields in which CIHEAM is con
ducting a programme of training and promotion of research, through
its Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza. The programme
includes a one-year advanced specialization course, a series of
two-week courses for professionals, and support for collaborative
research activities in Mediterranean-relevant species. Many of
these activities are organized in col laboration with national and
international institutions. The publication in 1993 of Plant
Breeding. Principles and Prospects, which ini tiated the Chapman
& Hall's Plant Breeding Series, has become an important feature
of CIHEAM's plant breeding programme. We are now pleased to add a
further volume to that series: the present book, Statistical
Methods for Plant Variety Evaluation."

This study is the first significant work to examine Soviet
involvement with national liberation movements (NLMs) in Africa as
a separate subcategory of Soviet foreign policy in the developing
world. The text compares and contrasts actual Soviet behavior with
declared policy. Daniel R. Kempton presents three case studies: the
African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa, The Movimento
Popular de Libertacao de Angola (MPLA) and the Zimbabwe African
People's Union (ZAPU). These cases trace the development of the
Soviet Union's ties to the national liberation movements, the
amount and types of assistance provided, and the impact of the
relationship on the national liberation movements. General analysts
of international relations, analysts of Soviet foreign policy and
Africanists will find this a valuable resource. The author contends
that during the 1960s and 1970s the Soviet Union pursued a common
strategy toward all three national liberation movements. Although
the strategy was applied flexibly to take into account the
idiosyncracies of the individual liberation struggles, in each case
the Soviet Union pushed the national liberation movement to adopt
the Soviet political model. The Soviet view was that the adoption
of this model would eventually lead to the development of
relatively more stable and dependable allies. Since 1980, however,
in each case there is significant evidence that the Soviet Union
has altered markedly, if not abandoned, its previous strategy.
The second of two studies devoted to the interrelations of poetry
and prose fiction, this volume examines the origins, development
and flowering of the verse novel as a literary hybrid. While the
first study was concerned with the different ways in which
novelists have incorporated poetry into their fictions, what is
analysed here is the manner in which poets have adopted novelistic
genres and techniques and adapted these to the prosodic
requirements of rhyming, blank and free verse in order to produce
original literary blends. The novel may thus acquire a fresh
dimension by being re-immersed in its original verse narrative
sources and poetry be rendered more accessible to a wider reading
public. Beginning with Pushkin, who was the first to coin the term
"verse novel" to describe his masterpiece Eugene Onegin, the first
section of this study considers a number of nineteenth-century
Romantic and Victorian verse narratives, as well as some
mid-twentieth-century experimental works, which can be seen to have
contributed to the rise of the verse novel. The second, much
longer, section concentrates on the period 1980-2010, which
witnessed the full fruition of the verse novel as a multicultural
fictional genre. A selection of some two dozen verse novels from
this period, notably those by Anthony Burgess, Anne Carson, Glyn
Maxwell, Les Murray, Vikram Seth and Derek Walcott, are discussed
in terms of both their novelistic and their prosodic merits.
There have been several attempts in recent years to create
conceptual frameworks and models to help universities and policy
makers understand the role and contribution of higher education to
local and regional development. However, these models have failed
to fully reflect or give insufficient attention to the impact of
the regional context (economic, social, political), the policy
environment for higher education and territorial development and
the diversity of management and leadership structures of
universities themselves. This has led to the development of static
models that rarely work outside of the immediate context in which
they were developed and therefore risk leading to design of
policies that are not fit for purpose. This Policy Expo is the
result of work with partners in Europe, South America, Africa, Asia
and Australia to develop a new approach, the ORPHIC Framework, to
think about how the university can be adapted to the specificity of
institutional and local contexts. The book examines: * What are the
different roles that universities play in local and regional
development and how do these manifest themselves? * How can we
learn from comparing practice and experience internationally, and
to what extent are policies aimed at promoting university-region
relationships transferrable? * What are the internal university
factors, such as management and leadership, history, mission,
structures, and the external factors, such as territorial
development policy context, governance system, nature of the
'place', that might help us explain the nature of the relationship?

Carole L. Crumley has brought together top scholars from across
anthropology in a benchmark volume that displays the range of
exciting new work on the complex relationship between humans and
the environment. Continually pursuing anthropology's persistent
claim that both the physical and the mental world matter, these
environmental scholars proceed from the holistic assumption that
the physical world and human societies are always inextricably
linked. As they incorporate diverse forms of knowledge, their work
reaches beyond anthropology to bridge the sciences, social
sciences, and the humanities, and to forge working relationships
with non-academic communities and professionals. Theoretical issues
such as the cultural dimensions of context, knowledge, and power
are articulated alongside practical discussions of building
partnerships, research methods and ethics, and strategies for
implementing policy. New Directions in Environment and Anthropology
will be important for all scholars and non-academics interested in
the relation between our species and its biotic and built
environments. It is also designed for classroom use in and beyond
anthropology, and students will be greatly assisted by suggested
reading lists for their further exploration of general concepts and
specific research. Learn more about the author at the University of
North Carolina Anthropology Department web pages.
