This official Society of Ploughmen handbook is aimed at people new to ploughing who need the basics for farm work, and the growing number of competitors at ploughing matches. This updated second edition includes the current rules for international match ploughing, the scoring system and ploughing organisations throughout the world. It gives an introduction to: * the types of plough and how to set them up * the main classes of competitive tractor ploughing: vintage mounted and trailed; world-type conventional ploughing; and reversible ploughing * a short history of ploughs Among the 200 illustrations there are over 150 colour photographs specially commissioned to show in detail good practices as well as faults and how to correct them. Author Brian Bell, Britain's leading farm machinery writer, has written this manual with the help of a number of ploughing experts including Ken Chappell, David Chappell and Peter Alderslade.
Ken Chappell MBE, Executive Director of the Society of Ploughmen, with over thirty years of championship ploughing, was British vintage champion in 1997 and 1999 and European vintage champion in 1998. He demonstrates the use of the mounted plough, including the opening, ploughing and the finish. Michael Watkins applies his skills to the trailed plough, again showing all the key elements of a competition plot. Michael won the British National Vintage Ploughing championship at his first attempt in 1998. Beside the specially filmed plots, the programme includes major sections on how to identify and correct ploughing faults as well as the basic settings and adjustments of vintage ploughs. The video has been directed and scripted by Brian Bell MBE, Britain's most experienced author of farm machinery books and videos. The programme is narrated by David Chappell, twice British conventional ploughing champion and an experienced judge of ploughing matches. David also acts as guide to the good and bad practices seen in a local vintage ploughing competition.
