Keepers of the Bond - Book I (Ein) (Hardcover): Kenneth Brown Keepers of the Bond - Book I (Ein) (Hardcover)
Kenneth Brown
R766 R650 Discovery Miles 6 500 Save R116 (15%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Set deep in the wilds of Texas is Caddo Lake, a rich, primeval swampland populated by characters straight out of modern mythology. Central to this area's history is Judge Newland and his extended circle of friends and kin-a.k.a., the BOND. Here, their story is told in a vivid, often convoluted fashion, as is befitting the true nature of the Texas wilderness.

Judge "Daddy" Newland knew-and was known by-everyone in this part of Texas, and his teachings were legendary. He urged his friends to seek truth and to ask for wisdom from God. He expected them to ask tough questions. He demanded that they keep their eyes against the seductive nature of evil and hate and that they look out for one another. He believed that nature was the only true beauty in the world and that it should always remain free. He knew that love was the most important of all emotions, followed only by hope-and that the two could never be separated. He directed his friends to look to the ancient world for truth and inspiration. And from those ancients, he formulated a deep appreciation for the pleasures of the flesh.

Daddy Newland directed his grandson, Kenneth Brown, to use his skills to share the teachings of his generation. Just as he was promised, those life lessons are within, ready to teach the next generation of Texans and beyond.

"Fate brings interesting people together and then blesses the responsible," he used to say, and that's the core of his legacy.

BRITISH TOY BUSINESS (Hardcover): Kenneth Brown BRITISH TOY BUSINESS (Hardcover)
Kenneth Brown
R4,362 Discovery Miles 43 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

At its height British toymaking was a significant industry, with famous names such as Britains and Meccano known throughout the world. While in essence a specialised form of small-scale engineering, its products and market have always been unique, reflecting the current priorities of both parents and children. Yet, while individual toys and marques have been catalogued extensively, no previous history of toymaking as a whole exists. The British Toy Business provides a fascinating example of the development of a specific industry.
Many early early toys were home-made. From the eighteenth century, with its growing recognition of children as something other than small adults, date the beginnings of specialised toys, usually produced by small workshops and sold by street-sellers. The nineteenth century, with its industrial growth and middle-class prosperity, saw an expansion of toymaking.
The 1960s and 1970s were the most successful years of British toymaking, with companies like Lesney making record profits. Yet British toy makers failed to solve a number of fundamental problems. Following an unexpected sudden downturn in sales at a time of high interest rates, the major names in British toy making, Lesney, Airfix, Mettoy and Dunbee Combex Marx, all collapsed between 1979 and 1985, leaving the business to be dominated largely by importers.

The Narratives of Konon - Text, Translation and Commentary of the Diegeseis (Hardcover, 1st ed.): Malcolm Kenneth Brown The Narratives of Konon - Text, Translation and Commentary of the Diegeseis (Hardcover, 1st ed.)
Malcolm Kenneth Brown
R5,493 Discovery Miles 54 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Konon's collection of fifty mythical "Narratives" "(Diegeseis)," which he dedicated to King Archelaos Philopatris of Cappadocia (36 B.C.-A.D. 17), is one of the most interesting mythographical works, not least because of the great variety of the material. It has also been one of the most neglected, in part because the work has not survived in its original form but in the summary of Photios, and also in part because it is the sole extant mythographic collection that was not organized around a particular theme, such as the better-known works of Parthenios and Antoninus Liberalis. Each narrative is set in a specific locality. Although several mythical categories are represented, foundation legends "(ktiseis)" and cult and local aetiologies predominate. Konon records versions of myths that depart from the standard tellings, as well as myths otherwise unattested.
This edition, the first published commentary on Konon in over two centuries, provides a text and translation of and commentary on each of the fifty tales, and an overview of mythography and of the myth types favored by Konon.

The Greenwood Annual Abstract of Legal Dissertations and Theses, 1985-1987 (Hardcover): Kenneth Brown The Greenwood Annual Abstract of Legal Dissertations and Theses, 1985-1987 (Hardcover)
Kenneth Brown
R2,419 Discovery Miles 24 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Until now tracking dissertations and theses prepared at American law schools has been an elusive undertaking. Few schools provide accessible information and the standard guides to dissertations largely have ignored the subject area. Yet most researchers have long recognized the potential value of these documents in subject areas as diverse as constitutional law, economic and social regulation, comparative law and politics, taxation, and international affairs.

The objective of "The Greenwood Annual Abstract of Legal Dissertations and TheseS" is to provide convenient research access to these materials. In this, the first volume in the program, abstracts are provided for 176 dissertation and theses issued from 1985 through 1987. Future volumes will strengthen the coverage of the initial period while bringing the coverage forward. The volume is organized in three sections. The abstract section comprises the bulk of the work and is organized alphabetically by author last name. Each entry consists of full author name; full title and, with few exceptions, full subtitle; name of the institution granting the degree; year the thesis or dissertation was submitted or copyrighted; the degree level; inclusive pagination; whether the material has notes, appendixes, or bibliography; and a one-page or longer abstract. The second section is a title index and the third is a subject index. The latter has been designed to be of use not only to researchers in the law but also to those in the social sciences.
