Continuing the story of Alta Airlines, the corporation first introduced to readers in the novel AIRLINE, Rough Air opens with the macabre murder of a well respected chief executive in his office on a summer day in 2005. Maynard Brennan, the first CEO in the colorful history of Alta to come from outside the ranks, is a catalyst for dramatic change within the corporation. He cleans house, removing Alta's incumbent executives, unaware that he is sowing the seeds of his own demise. Through the eyes of Caroline Woodson - a long-time flight attendant and Alta veteran - we follow Maynard's progression to the top and the circumstances that lead to his murder, including the jockeying of his newly appointed leadership team: Rex Wright, a flamboyant and charismatic personality with a long airline pedigree; Bernice Anthony, a financial genius who is determined to become the first woman CEO of a major airline; and Trey Sperling, a young consulting wizard whose idea for an "airline within an airline" is given the green light to save the stodgy operation from further financial bleeding. At the moment of Maynard's death, the story takes a leap backward, to the life of the founder, Marty Willman, and his shepherding of the airline through the turmoil of the jet age, the civil rights era in the south and Alta's bold growth into a global airline. Marty maintains Alta's humble family culture through the end of his reign, but it is a stark contrast to the present-day enterprise - one in which pay cuts and layoffs bankroll the bonuses of Alta's elite executives. The story resumes with the investigation of the murder. Caroline, who has risen to a high-ranking position, is front and center as Alta's ambitious leaders reveal themselves and the murderer among them at the climactic finale of the story.
Four years ago, Jack Temple was a homicide detective. He asked one too many questions and found himself out of a job. Now he is a reporter for the "Garden City Times," writing about cops and still asking too many questions. When the mutilated body of Temple's former girlfriend - the Mayor's daughter - is found frozen in a local park, Temple dusts off his detective skills to uncover the truth behind the grisly murder. As he digs for clues, Temple finds himself drawn into the most difficult and dangerous investigation of his career. As an FBI serial killer investigation team takes an interest in the case, Temple taps old friends and bitter enemies to pierce the mystery - why does the FBI believe so many cases are connected? In what becomes an international manhunt he questions whether murder suspects arrested are guilty or just a cover for the truth. In the "Dead Times," Temple must use his wits and his fists to save himself and get the story of a lifetime.
""He was flying a plane, his plane. And though he would manage to land it safely that evening, his soul would remain aloft for the rest of his life."" And so begins the tale of young Marty Willman, who turns a fledgling crop dusting operation into a commercial airline empire. His entrepreneurial spirit and paternal leadership through the early part of the 20th century give rise to a loyal family of employees, and the eventual ascendance of Wesley Arnold, the authoritarian CEO who guides the corporation through the growth and acquisitions of the 1990's. Among Wesley's legions are Caroline and Danny, whose youthful love for each other evolves into a loyal friendship. Their shared devotion to their company combines with tumultuous real-life events to form a vivid backdrop for the turbulent ride of a once humble enterprise. From the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta to the transformations of 9/11, from the graceful arc of a single biplane to the roar of a jumbo jet, "AIRLINE" is the story of a corporation-of the battle between loyalty and the headwinds of powerful self-interest. And of the endurance of relationships in the face of events we can never control.
Pellegrino's Clinical Bioethics: A Compendium offers, for the first time, a collection of the landmark articles in clinical bioethics authored by the physician and philosopher, Edmund D Pellegrino. As one of the founding figures of modern medical ethics, Dr. Pellegrino gained international renown for his deeply reflective scholarship and for his public service in developing the field. In over 600 scholarly papers and two dozen books, he touched on topics in medical ethics, philosophy, and theology. Previous attempts to collect his work gave rise to a mixed assortment of his thoughts. This volume focuses purely on those topics in clinical bioethics that are sought after by healthcare professionals, professional and graduate students in these fields, and those involved with clinical bioethics in hospitals and clinics. His legacy and profound influence in the proper practice of the field of medicine is thus made accessible to present and subsequent generations.
