The Economic Geography of the IT Industry in the Asia Pacific Region (Paperback): Philip Cooke, Glen Searle, Kevin O'Connor The Economic Geography of the IT Industry in the Asia Pacific Region (Paperback)
Philip Cooke, Glen Searle, Kevin O'Connor
R1,532 Discovery Miles 15 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The development of the information technology (IT) industry in the Asia Pacific region faces two challenges. Firstly, can its established physical, technical, regional and governance infrastructures be adapted to meet the challenges embedded in the set of products and processes created by the IT industry? Secondly, as this adaptation evolves, which cities and regions will be best suited to connect to or lead global responses to these challenges? The chapters in this book have set out to explore these questions, providing details of change in a range of aspects of the IT industry such as mobile phones, software services, and flat screen design in regions in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, India, China and Australia. The book also outlines the policy responses of national and regional governments in Singapore, India and China and India. These case studies provide a basis to understand effective strategies which could be formulated for the future. This book's originality emerges from the fine detail provided about firms, in particular regions and cities, from research carried out by young scholars in the past two years. This makes it very useful for readers keen to understand the recent changes in this dynamic industry in a fast growth part of the world, and it will also help to shape thinking by policy makers on policy settings that can be applied.

R4,373 Discovery Miles 43 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book brings together in a single volume concrete applications of play therapy by seasoned clinicians from various theoretical perspectives. The goal is to reflect the broad spectrum of approaches that now exist in the field. The major psychopathologies in children present the therapist with different problems and therefore require different approaches. Another guiding belief underlying this volume is that descriptive studies that carefully detail psychotherapy process are among the most useful and practical resources for both students and practicing therapists. This casebook offers step-by-step treatment guidelines for a number of childhood difficulties, including internalizing, externalizing, and post-traumatic disorders. It should be of interest to both students and more advanced practitioners in a variety of mental health disciplines, including social work; psychiatry; clinical, counseling, and school psychology; expressive arts therapy; child-life therapy; and psychiatric nursing. Recent interest in human and social aspects in economic analysis of regional change has emphasized the significance of regional relational assets: expressed in social capital. This book aims to analyze the role of regional relational assets in economic development of Kyrgyzstan as expressed in the development of markets in that country. It does so in two stages. First, through the analysis of three open air markets/bazaars in two culturally different regions. By analysing the economic performances of three markets and relational assets shaping their activities this research reveals how cultural and relational differences of two regions are reflected in the economic performances of these markets. Secondly, the research compares the economic performance and relational qualities of three distinct ethnic groups of merchants: Kyrgyz, Russian and Uzbek. The research builds a link between the complexity of trading operations on these markets and the nature of relational assets of traders. It also reveals a deeper connection between the inherent but evolving cultural qualities of three ethnic groups and their role in the market activity.

Fault Lines Exposed - Advantage and Disadvantage across Australia's Settlement System (Paperback): Scott Baum, Kevin... Fault Lines Exposed - Advantage and Disadvantage across Australia's Settlement System (Paperback)
Scott Baum, Kevin O'Connor, Robert Stimson
R698 Discovery Miles 6 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Fault Lines Exposed intends to understand inequality across Australian cities and towns. Social and economic change in Australia has resulted in the emergence of disparities in advantage and disadvantage between metropolitan communities and regional localities, towns and cities. In 1999 the book Community Opportunity and Vulnerability (Baum et al.) considered the disparities that existed between communities using 1996 census data. This new book, available both online and in print, uses up-to-date data to reanalyse the patterns and consider the important policy issues that arise from the patterns identified. Fault Lines Exposed provides insight into advantage and disadvantage at an aggregate community or locality level. Such insight is necessary to better understand what is happening in society. It helps in the planning of effective solutions to problems that impact not only on individuals and families but also on communities. Each of the chapters outlines the main findings from the typology of advantage and disadvantage. The book concludes with a strong policy orientation, addressing possible options and raising more policy questions. Fault Lines Exposed will be essential reading for academics, researchers, students, policy makers and other professionals working in the areas of geography, sociology, economics and social work.
