This book summarizes the research findings from the relatively new
domain of study called "organizational perception management"
(OPM). While perception management has been studied at the
individual level since the 1960's, organization-level perception
management was first examined in the 1980's in the context of
corporate annual reports that focused on organizational standard
and performance. Since then, empirical studies have expanded the
domain of organizational perception management to include the
management of organizational identities, as well as the strategic
management of specialized organizational images for specific
audiences. The goals of Organizational Perception Management are
to: *summarize and organize this evolving literature to provide a
complete and comprehensive definition of OPM events and tactics;
*illustrate OPM events and tactics in specific, real-world
contexts; and *identify a set of research themes that may stimulate
further research on OPM. This text is grounded primarily in
empirical research on OPM, including qualitative field research,
and uses current research and case studies to illustrate the
application and effectiveness of OPM in context. As such, it will
appeal to students, scholars, and practitioners of organizational
management.

The Davis Conference on Organizational Research, held for the last
15 years, is the world's leading conference for qualitative
researchers in organizational studies. Scholars receiving the "Best
presentation awards" at the Davis Conference for the past 6 years
have contributed chapters to this volume. These papers explore
social relationships in organizations and work, and cover a diverse
set of topics ranging from boundary spanning in collaboration and
teamwork to embodied competence at work and beliefs about
availability among professionals. Yet all the papers are similar in
that they benefited from the community of over 150 scholars
developed through the Davis Conference, and represent qualitative
research at its very best.

Over the past five years the Davis Conference on Qualitative
Research has welcomed research projects by the very best
qualitative, organizational researchers in the world. This
conference has helped authors develop and hone theoretical ideas in
an environment friendly to qualitative methods, and more
importantly, has begun to build a community of qualitative
researchers that work on organizational and management issues. The
authors winning the ""Best Presentation Awards"" at the Davis
Conference over the past five years have contributed chapters to
this volume. The ideas in these chapters were ""born"" before the
conference, but were nurtured through dialogue at the conference,
and subsequently matured through later interactions among the
community of qualitative scholars associated with the conference.
As such, this volume represents the fruits of our collective labor
as a qualitative research community. This collective and iterative
process is a hallmark of qualitative methods, and often leads to a
counter-intuitive, ""ah-hah"" experience for the researcher. This
volume showcases some of the very best of those ah-hah experiences
from the organizational, qualitative research community.
Church Ethics and Its Organizational Context is the first book to
provide a broadly interdisciplinary approach to understanding the
leadership crisis in the Catholic Church in the wake of the sex
abuse scandal and how it was handled. Well-known scholars,
religious clergy, and laymen in the trenches of church formation
and leadership come together from the disciplines of organizational
behavior, theology, sociology, history, and law, to foster the
creation of a new code of ethics that is both ecclesial and
professional. Touching on issues of governance, authority,
accountability, and transparency, this volume goes on to
specifically explore whether and how professional ethics can shape
the identity and actions of Church leaders, ministers, and their
congregations. While evoked by the sex scandal in the Church, the
essays in this book raise questions that have implications far
beyond this current issue, to much broader issues such as the role
of professionalism in ethics and what it means for an organization
to engage in moral action.
