Seit Mitte der 70er Jahre lasst sich in der Unternehmenspraxis eine zunehmende Auseinandersetzung mit Fragen der betrieblichen Umweltkostenrechnung beobachten. Die Berechnungen beschrankten sich bis in die 80er Jahre hinein auf die Ermittlung der Kosten von nachsorgenden Umweltschutzmassnahmen und wurden meist als Sonderrechnungen durchgefuhrt. Die laufende Kostenrechnung blieb dabei von Umweltfragen unberuhrt. Seit einigen Jahren werden jedoch umfassendere Konzepte einer Umweltkostenrechnung entwickelt, die deren Integration in das Managementsystem und die Kostenrechnung der Unternehmen zum Ziel haben. Hier werden, ausgehend vom Stand der Diskussion, mogliche Konsequenzen fur die Weiterentwicklung bzw. die zukunftigen Anforderungen an eine Umweltkostenrechnung vorgestellt."

Des halb ist gerade die deutsche Politik gefordert, zur Erhaltung und Foerderung unse rer Wettbewerbsfahigkeit fur ein hoeheres Mass an internationalem Umweltschutz bei gleichzeitiger Gewahrleistung des freien Handels einzutreten. Anspruchsvolle internationale Umweltstandards eroeffnen innovativen deut schen Produzenten von Umweltschutz-Technologien auf einem rasant wachsenden Weltmarkt beachtliche neue Geschaftsfelder und Potentiale. Die Politik kann hier flankierend zur Seite stehen, sei es mit Hilfe des umfangreichen aussenwirtschaft lichen Foerderinstrumentariums, sei es als Turoeffner. Allerdings: Die Hauptarbeit muss von der Wirtschaft selbst geleistet werden.

Fragen des betrieblichen Umweltschutzes haben in den letzten Jahren weltweit an Bedeutung gewonnen. In Abhangigkeit der jeweiligen nationalen Managementkultur und der umweltpolitischen Rahmenbedingungen werden seither in verschiedenen Landern zukunftsweisende Instrumente und Ansatze des Umweltmanagements entwickelt und praktiziert.
