Although known for its gold production, California is a virtual
haven for rock and gem collectors. With this fully revised and
updated edition, you can explore the mineral-rich desert regions,
comb tide-washed beaches for jade, agate, abalone, fossilized whale
bone, and prospect in the mountains and hills for gold, copper, and
other minerals and gems. It describes 75 of the state's best
rockhounding sites and covers popular and commercial sites as well
as numerous little-known areas. This handy guide also describes how
to collect specimens, includes maps, directions, and GPS
coordinates for each site, and lists rockhound clubs around the
state. Rockhounding California offers a complete introduction to
this many-faceted hobby.
This book analyzes why Left Parties enter national government, what
they do when they get there and what effect this has on them.
Alongside two comparative chapters, this book features detailed
case-studies of European Left Parties in government.
Working with Latino Youth offers counselors, teachers, social workers, therapists, and other professionals-no matter what their level of experience or cultural background-an accessible and practical guide for working effectively with Latino children and adolescents. This vital resource, which integrates development, culture, and psychological intervention, helps meet the challenge of addressing an array of culturally specific problems such as assimilation, discrimination, scholastic failure, pregnancy, substance abuse, and delinquency. The authors, Joan D. Koss-Chioino and Luis A. Vargas, present a dynamic new model for working with Latino youth that considers the individual within the context of their families, their communities, and their culture. "At a time when America and its professionals increasingly need to be responsive to the diversity of cultures, Koss-Chioino and Vargas have authored a comprehensive overview of Latino youth, who are rich in their own diversity. This highly readable book provides a wealth of information and examples about a 'new ethnic majority' to assist practitioners in their approaches not only with Latino children and families, but also with applicability to a variety of cultures through the contextual model these authors describe."--Michael C. Roberts, professor and director, Clinical Child Psychology Program, University of Kansas
This is the first book in either English or German to analyse the
development of Germany's newest political party, the Left Party. It
compares and contrasts the party's development with that of
Germany's most well-known outsider party - the Greens. It also
analyses the party's performance in office in two eastern German
Lander. Finally, the book also puts the merger between the PDS and
the WASG under the microscope before speculating on the party's
future prospects.

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of Islamist
organizations' conceptions of political order based on a
comparative case study of the Shiite Lebanese Hezbollah and the
Sunni Palestinian Hamas. Connecting Islamism research, Critical
Constructivist norm research, and resistance studies from the field
of International Relations Theory, it demonstrates that resistance
constitutes both organizations' core norm and is relevant for their
conceptions of political order. Based on primary Arabic data the
book illustrates that the core norm of resistance, deeply
intertwined with both organizations' interactions towards power
preservation and the specific political context they are engaged
in, characterizes Hezbollah's and Hamas' respective conceptions of
political order and explains the differences between them. In
contrast to common perceptions presented in research, politics, and
the media, the book shows that in the case of both Hezbollah and
Hamas the religious orientation, i.e. Shiite and Sunni Islamist
political thought, plays a secondary role only when it comes to
explaining Islamist organizations' political orientation. Bringing
new insights from cases that lie beyond the Western liberal world
order into Critical Constructivist norm research and resistance
studies, the book establishes a theoretical framework that enables
scholars to comprehensively analyze Islamist organizations'
political orientation in different cases without being caught in
limited analytical categories. It will be of interest to students
and scholars of International Relations Theory, Middle East
Studies, and Global Governance.
People do their best work when they are motivated. This may sound
obvious, but while people managers instinctively agree with the
centrality of motivation at work and its impact on employee
engagement, their practices do not follow. With so much "real work"
to do every day, how can managers also carve out time to learn,
engage, build relationships, tap motivation, encourage development,
and inspire? The problem is a false dichotomy between the world of
business and that of people development. What if managers were able
to systematically transform everyday business issues into
meaningful, developmental coaching opportunities with employees at
the same time? This proven coaching approach radically shifts
conversations away from either-or propositions and uses an entirely
different lens: transforming business challenges by connecting them
directly to employee motivation to achieve the desired business
result while dramatically increasing employee engagement. And all
this comes none too soon as leaders must rethink the way they lead
given the modern realities of organizational life. Among them: A
rapidly changing workplace and increasing uncertainty that requires
a fundamental shift in the leader's approach, including the
distribution of authority and the expectation that employees take
responsibility for their own learning Pervasive and persistent
employee disengagement, characterized by employees who no longer
accept the organization's priorities at the expense of their own,
where organizations that continue to dictate terms will find
ongoing challenges with costly employee turnover and lack of
engagement During the past decade, the Developmental Coaching Model
has been taught across the globe in nine languages and has been
enthusiastically embraced by thousands of managers while dissolving
the invisible barriers that block individual and organizational
development and business success.
Recently there has been a convergence of party funding regimes
across many states of Western Europe. The driving force behind this
process has been the introduction of state funding to political
parties. This book subsequently asks why state funding to political
parties has been introduced in ever more countries and yet there
still remain some places where it has only been introduced to a
decidedly limited degree? It argues that a consensus of the
relevant parties is a prerequisite for the introduction of state
funding, thereby assuming a nexus between particular forms of party
competition and the outcome of party funding reforms. The author
shows how the introduction of state funding is more likely to occur
in countries where parties have a high number of institutional veto
points at their disposal, where both policy- and office-seeking
play a more important role in parties' strategic preferences than
vote-seeking, and where the discourse on political corruption
identifies state funding as a remedy against corrupt practices.
These assumptions are confirmed for four cases: Germany, Sweden,
the UK, and France. He argues that two constellations of
independent variables facilitate the introduction or reform of
state subsidies. On the one hand, in political systems that provide
parties with a considerable number of veto points, vote-seeking
generally plays a minor role in decisions about party funding. On
the other hand parties can reach a consensus independently of the
institutional environment and their strategic preferences by
engaging in the discourse on political corruption. Decreasing
levels of ideological polarisation prior to the introduction of
state funding imply that causal mechanisms similar to the ones
identified in the four case studies are at work in established
democracies in Western Europe more generally. Thus, the book
represents a first step towards a theory which explains differences
and similarities in party funding regimes.
Joan D. Koss-Chioino and Philip Hefner's new volume is unique in
exploring the meaning of spiritual transformation and healing with
new research from a scientific perspective. An interdisciplinary
group of contributors-anthropological, psychological, medical,
theological, and biological scientists-investigate the role of
religious communities and healing practitioners, with spiritual
transformation as their medium of healing. Individual authors
evaluate the meaning of spiritual transformations and the
consequences for those who experience it; the contributions of
indigenous healing systems; new frameworks for neurological and
physiological correlates of transformative religious experiences;
the support from neuroscience for the radical empathy and
intersubjective exchange that takes place in healing practices; and
evidence for universal elements of the healing process. This
exciting new book will be an invaluable resource for those
generally interested in the role of religion in society, across the
sciences, social sciences, and all religious traditions. With a
foreword by Solomon H. Katz.

Comparative Politics is a series for researchers, teachers, and
students of political science that deals with contemporary
government and politics. Global in scope, books in the series are
characterized by a stress on comparative analysis and strong
methodological rigour. The series is published in association with
the European Consortium for Political Research. For more
information visit: www.ecprnet.eu The series is edited by Emilie
van Haute, Professor of Political Science, UniversitA (c) libre de
Bruxelles; Ferdinand Muller-Rommel, Director of the Center for the
Study of Democracy, Leuphana University; and Susan Scarrow, John
and Rebecca Moores Professor of Political Science, University of
Houston. How can we explain the evolution of legislatures in
Western Europe? This book analyses ninety procedural reforms which
restructured control over the plenary agenda and committee power in
Britain, France, Sweden, and Germany between 1866 and 2015.
Legislatures evolve towards one of two procedural ideal types:
talking (where governments control the agenda) or working
legislatures (with powerful committees). All else being equal,
legislators' demand for mega-seats on legislative committees
triggers the evolution of working legislatures. If, however,
legislators fail to centralize agenda control in response to
anti-system obstruction, legislative procedures break down. Rather
than a decline of legislatures, talking legislatures accordingly
indicate the resilience of legislative democracy. In conclusion,
the book shows the causal nexus between procedural reforms and
(legislative) democracy.

In most non-democratic countries, today governing forty-four
percent of the world population, the power of the regime rests upon
a ruling party. Contrasting with conventional notions that
authoritarian regime parties serve to contain elite conflict and
manipulate electoral-legislative processes, this book presents the
case of China and shows that rank and-file members of the Communist
Party allow the state to penetrate local communities. Subnational
comparative analysis demonstrates that in 'red areas' with high
party saturation, the state is most effectively enforcing policy
and collecting taxes. Because party membership patterns are
extremely enduring, they must be explained by events prior to the
Communist takeover in 1949. Frontlines during the anti-colonial
Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) continue to shape China's political
map even today. Newly available evidence from the Great Leap
Forward (1958-1961) and the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) shows
how a strong local party basis sustained the regime in times of
existential crisis.

Cytologic diagnosis of cancer has its roots in clinical micro scopy
as it was shaped during the first half of the 19th century. In
reviewing some of the early writing on this subject, one is amazed
at the accuracy of the descriptions and soundness of the
observations. Cytology of the urine is no exception: in 1864
Sanders described fragments of cancerous tissue in the urine of a
patient with bladder cancer (Edinburgh Med. J. 111, 273). This
observation was confirmed by Dickinson in 1869 (Tr. Path. Soc.
London, 20, 233). It is a source of special pride to me that in
1892 a New York pathologist, Frank Ferguson, advocated the
examination of the urinary sediment as a best means of diagnosing
bladder cancer, short of cystoscopy. Papanico laou freely
acknowledged these contributions while estab lishing sound
scientific bases for continuation and spread of this work.
Papanicolaou's work in the area of the urinary tract has not fallen
on dead ears. He documented to several urologists who were within
his sphere of personal influence, mainly Dr. Victor Marshall,
Professor of Urology at Cor nell University Medical School, that
urinary tract cytology was a reliable tool in the diagnosis of
urothelial carcinoma. Some of us who have attempted to spread the
master's word had their share of success within institutions with
which we were associated.
Few subjects in gynecology, let alone in medicine in general, have
provoked such inter est or study as cervical cancer. Although the
wealth of monographs and books publish ed on the subject would seem
to obviate the need for more, the great advances made in the
medical sciences and in gynecological experience and techniques in
recent years call for, if not require, a new book on cervical
cancer to bring together the latest ideas and trends in its methods
of study, diagnosis, and treatment. Although precancerous lesions
have become more common, the number of women developing invasive
cervical carcinomas has not increased, owing in part to programs of
patient education, in part to screening examinations sponsored by
the government. The gynecologist is now able to detect with
well-tried and proved techniques precan cerous states of the
cervix, and to treat these effectively before they become invasive
cancer. Accordingly, recent interests in cervical cancer have
shifted from the classic descrip tion of invasive carcinoma to
newer studies of cause, diagnosis, therapy, and terminol ogy of its
precursors. As the reader will learn, epidemiological studies as
guides for the future account for, and justifiably so, an important
part of this book. New knowledge about changes in the morphology of
cervical carcinoma confirms its dependency on hormonal stimulation.
Furthermore, modem experiences serve to explain which therapy is
best. Overlapping of concepts and opinions between some chapters
could not be avoided."

In recent years, papillomaviruses in general and human papillo
maviruses in particular have been recognized as possible agents of
important diseases, including some forms of human cancer. The
purpose of this book is to present a concise panorama of the pre
sent status of knowledge of this topic. This knowledge is as impor
tant to molecular biologists and virologists as it is to clinicians
and pathologists. To bridge the gap among these diverse groups of
investigators, we conceived of a book covering a broad spectrum of
the basic scientific, clinical, and pathological aspects of
diseases associated with papillomaviruses. Although the principal
thrust of this book is directed at human papillomaviruses,
fundamental knowledge of animal viruses is essential to the current
understand ing of the molecular mechanisms of cell transformation.
For this reason, a chapter on animal viruses has also been
included. Some of the experimental work having to do with the
elucidation of transformation and other aspects of interaction
between the virus and the cell cannot be based on human
papillomaviruses because of a lack of suitable experimental models.
Hence, some of the chapters dealing with fundamental aspects of
viral molecular biol ogy are based on animal models. We were very
fortunate in having persuaded a number of distin guished colleagues
to contribute to this work."
Sir John Brunner, the son of a Swiss schoolmaster who settled in
England, was co-founder of Brunner, Mond and Company, one of the
great English chemical firms of the nineteenth century and the
predecessor of ICI. Always interested in politics, Brunner entered
Parliament after his industrial activities had already won for him
a reputation as the Chemical Croesus'. Unlike most wealthy men of
his time, he was a staunch supporter of the Liberal Party and a
patron of its Radical causes: Irish Home Rule, disestablishment,
land reform, welfare legislation, and naval disarmament. He
achieved prominence and wide influence in politics, though never
Cabinet rank, and presided over the National Liberal Federation in
the crucial years before and during the First World War. Although
Brunner was a paternalistic employer opposing socialism, one of his
last political gestures was his support of a Labour candidate in
the 'coupon' election of 1918. Professor Koss' study is based on a
wide range of research, including extensive use of letters and
other papers in the possession of the Brunner family.
