The main assumption of this thesis, on which hypotheses were formulated, is that Croatian TV-viewers receive most information about British and American culture through subtitles, since most foreign-language programmes are subtitled and since watching TV, i.e. reading subtitles, is more widespread than reading books and other forms of written word. The aim of the thesis is to elicit the relevance of subtitles for the perception of culture. The thesis will first give an overview of theoretical research in the field of AVT (audiovisual translation) and it will explore the main paradigms applied in the field of Translation Studies and their possible application in the study of interlingual subtitling. The thesis will then explore strategies used in subtitling which may influence perception and technical procedures used in subtitling, such as the use of templates, as well as the identity of Croatian as a language used in subtitling. The second part of the thesis is focused on the study of the perception of subtitles tested through the method of empirical research conducted on a sample of viewers of television programmes in Croatia. The survey includes an original questionnaire and watching of a set of video clips. The questionnaire is made of two parts with the aim of establishing the link between previous knowledge and the relevance of various other elements of a moving picture, such as acting and context, for the understanding of a subtitled content. The purpose of the thesis is also to explore the degree of relevance of subtitles on the perception of culture as opposed to other elements of a subtitled TV content.

Ova knjiga napisana je 1970. na temelju dnevnika putovanja oko svijeta 60-ih godina prosloga stoljeca, kada je Zeitgeist bio neodoljivo optimistican i kada se mlada zena nije morala brinuti to luta sama po Delhiju - gdje je bila 1965., kada je izbio rat izmedju Indije i Pakistana, ili Srednjom Amerikom - gdje je 1966. na konju presla granicu izmedju Gvatemale i Hondurasa. This edited collection offers a rounded vision of some of the ways in which audiovisual translation (AVT) can be approached from an academic, professional and educational point of view. The studies provide a stimulating and thought-provoking account of some of the most representative themes that are currently being researched in the field of AVT, while also highlighting new directions of potential research from a cognitive perspective. A conscious effort has been made to cover not only cultural and linguistic approaches to traditional domains of AVT (such as dubbing and subtitling), but also to look into lesser known areas of research that are attracting substantial interest from various stakeholders and gradually becoming part of the remit of AVT (including subtitling for the deaf and audio description for the blind). In this respect, the chapters of this book tackle the field of AVT from a plural, comprehensive and up-to-date perspective; speak of a rich and complex academic subject in the making; broaden our existing knowledge on AVT; reflect the many crossroads and junctions it currently faces and outline some of the issues that will become topical in the near future in this fascinating, flourishing discipline.
