In the watershed year of 1919, world leaders met in Paris,
promising to build a new international order rooted in democracy
and social justice. Female activists demanded that statesmen live
up to their word. Excluded from the negotiating table, women met
separately, crafted their own agendas, and captured global
headlines with a message that was both straightforward and
revolutionary: enduring peace depended as much on recognition of
the fundamental humanity and equality of all people-regardless of
sex, race, class, or creed-as on respect for the sovereignty of
independent states. Peace on Our Terms follows dozens of remarkable
women from Europe, the Middle East, North America, and Asia as they
crossed oceans and continents; commanded meeting halls in Paris,
Zurich, and Washington; and marched in the streets of Cairo and
Beijing. Mona L. Siegel's sweeping global account of international
organizing highlights how Egyptian and Chinese nationalists,
Western and Japanese labor feminists, white Western suffragists,
and African American civil rights advocates worked in tandem to
advance women's rights. Despite significant resistance, these
pathbreaking women left their mark on emerging democratic
constitutions and new institutions of global governance. Drawing on
a wide range of sources, Peace on Our Terms is the first book to
demonstrate the centrality of women's activism to the Paris Peace
Conference and the critical diplomatic events of 1919. Siegel tells
the timely story of how female activists transformed women's rights
into a global rallying cry, laying a foundation for generations to
come.
While French schoolteachers of the late nineteenth century have
been widely celebrated for converting 'peasants into Frenchmen',
their interwar counterparts have enjoyed little such acclaim. Both
contemporary critics and subsequent scholars have condemned French
pacifist schoolteachers of the interwar decades for cultivating
antipatriotism and facilitating the defeat of 1940. In this 2004
book, Mona L. Siegel challenges such equations of teachers'
pacifism with national betrayal. Drawn to pacifist ideals in the
aftermath of World War I, schoolteachers sought to 'morally disarm'
the nation by purging their classrooms of the militaristic images,
symbols, narratives, and values that had led their generation to
accept war without question in 1914. At the same time, however,
their teaching remained rooted in longstanding patriotic and
republican traditions. Siegel argues that interwar schoolteachers
ultimately solidified French citizens' patriotic loyalties in an
era when economic hardship and political extremism threatened to
undermine those very ideals.
For some time now, the study of cognitive development has been far
and away the most active discipline within developmental
psychology. Although there would be much disagreement as to the
exact proportion of papers published in develop mental journals
that could be considered cognitive, 50% seems like a conservative
estimate. Hence, a series of scholarly books devoted to work in
cognitive devel opment is especially appropriate at this time. The
Springer Series in Cognitive Development contains two basic types
of books, namely, edited collections of original chapters by
several authors, and original volumes written by one author or a
small group of authors. The flagship for the Springer Series is a
serial publication of the "advances" type, carrying the subtitle
Progress in Cognitive Development Research. Each volume in the
Progress sequence is strongly thematic, in that it is limited to
some well-defined domain of cognitive developmental research (e.g.,
logical and mathematical development, development of learning). All
Progress volumes will be edited collections. Editors of such
collections, upon consultation with the Series Editor, may elect to
have their books published either as contributions to the Progress
sequence or as separate volumes. All books written by one author or
a small group of authors are being published as separate volumes
within the series."

Virtually all radiologists and healthcare administrators believe that every radiology department will be utilizing the cutting edge technology of PACS (Picture Archival and Communications System) in the future. Filmless Radiology is the first clinically oriented book to fully describe PACS and its impact on the cost and quality of patient care. Radiologist, medical physicists, physicians, nurses, and technologists will use it as a valuable source when navigating the transition from conventional to filmless systems. Radiology and hospital administrators will find it an indispensable tool for planning, justifying and purchasing a PACS. Computer system specialists, as well as biomedical engineers, will learn detailed and technical practical information about utilizing a PACS, and the networks and communication protocols required for successful operation. Students of all healthcare professions, engineering, and law will gain a comprehensive overview of the current state of art in medical digital imaging. Filmless Radiology chronicles the clinical and administrative experience acquired over the past several years by early adopters and providers of PAC Systems, and examines the future relationship of radiology to health information systems.

The present book represents to a large extent the translation of
the German "Vorlesungen uber Himmelsmechanik" by C. L. Siegel. The
demand for a new edition and for an English translation gave rise
to the present volume which, however, goes beyond a mere
translation. To take account of recent work in this field a number
of sections have been added, especially in the third chapter which
deals with the stability theory. Still, it has not been attempted
to give a complete presentation of the subject, and the basic
prganization of Siegel's original book has not been altered. The
emphasis lies in the development of results and analytic methods
which are based on the ideas of H. Poincare, G. D. Birkhoff, A.
Liapunov and, as far as Chapter I is concerned, on the work of K.
F. Sundman and C. L. Siegel. In recent years the
measure-theoretical aspects of mechanics have been revitalized and
have led to new results which will not be discussed here. In this
connection we refer, in particular, to the interesting book by V.
I. Arnold and A. Avez on "Problemes Ergodiques de la Mecanique
Classique," which stresses the interaction of ergodic theory and
mechanics. We list the points in which the present book differs
from the German text. In the first chapter two sections on the tri
pie collision in the three body problem have been added by C. L.
Siegel."
As part of the 125th anniversary celebration of the founding of
Beth Jacob in 1888 in Boston's West End, the Board of the Boston
Synagogue decided to celebrate by writing a history of the
synagogue and its predecessor shuls. This task was made much more
difficult by the fact the shul's Archival/Historical Committee
began with very little information, and limited archival record
access. However, after what became an elaborate treasure hunt, the
Committee developed a fascinating story of how these shuls were
established, prospered, and then weathered a prolonged period of
decline Much of what was uncovered is not widely known. Parts of it
are funny (like the story of how some disgruntled Kosher butchers
and a rejected suitor poisoned all 2,000 guests at the wedding of a
rabbi's daughter; fortunately, no one died). The Committee also
interviewed former West End resident Leonard Nimoy, who among other
things commented that the famous Vulcan salute comes from the
priestly blessing that he observed as a teenager at one of our
predecessor synagogue's High Holiday services. In some ways, the
story of Boston Synagogue is the story of Boston generally:
substantial growth due to immigration at the turn of the 20th
century; followed by a long period of urban decline; then
substantial resurgence as downtown Boston has become an
increasingly attractive place for people to live. As such, this
history celebrates not just the Boston synagogue, but the entire
downtown Boston community of which it is a part.
Invitational Leadership is a fresh and innovative model based on a
single theoretical framework. The model shifts from emphasizing
control and dominance to one that focuses on connectedness,
cooperation, and communication. Based on sound philosophical and
psychological assumptions, Invitational Leadership has been tested
and successfully applied by leaders in numerous fields, including
administration, business, nursing, dentistry, counseling, and other
professions. Invitational Leadership is the basis for the
International Alliance for Invitational Education, a network of
over a thousand professionals from all 50 states as well as Great
Britain, Canada, China, South Africa, and countries throughout
Central and South America. William Purkey and Betty Siegel have
written much more than a guidebook to becoming a healthier and more
effective leader; they proffer a radically profound, compelling
argument that it is time for people in positions of authority to
forge a new kind of relationship with others based on dialogue,
respect, and collaboration. This insightful work is long overdue in
an age of “might makes right,ā€¯ and contains great wisdom in
promoting solid values found in various democratic and spiritual
organizations. Supervisors and coaches, CEOā€™s and shop stewards,
managers and parents — anyone and everyone who deals with others,
take notice. This is a truly inspirational book in its invitation
for all people to join together in a shared vision of promise and
greatness.
