Today, arylation methods are belonging to the most important
reaction types in organic synthesis. Lutz Ackermann, a young and
ambitious professor has gathered a number of top international
authors to present the first comprehensive book on the topic.
Starting from a historical review, the book covers hot topics like
Palladium-catalyzed arylation of N-H and alpha-C-H-acidic Bonds,
Copper-catalyzed arylation of N-H and O-H Bonds, direct arylation
reactions, carbanion aromatic synthesis, arylation reactions of
alkenes, alkynes and much more.
This compact source of high quality information is indispensable to
synthetic chemists and those working in the pharmaceutical and
chemical industry.

27.3. 1845 in
Lennep, gest. 10. 2. 1923 in Miinchen) entdeckten Bremsstrahlen,
"Rentgen", entstellt. An dieser Stelle sei eine kurze
geschichtliche Exkursion gestattet.
Directed metalation is recognized as one of the most useful
methodologies for the regio- and stereoselective generation of
organometallic species, the generation of which necessarily leads
to the selective formation of organic products. Cyclometalation
using Li, Mn, and Pd, and directed hydrometalation and
carbometalation using Al and Zn, have been utilized for regio-
and/or stereoselective synthesis for decades. Recently, a new
chelation-assisted methodology has been developed not only for
controlling regio- and stereoselectivity of reactions, but also for
accelerating reactions. In particular, chelation-methodology has
been utilized as a new activation method, in which a carbon-metal
bond is generated directly from a C-H bond; a reaction rarely
achieved using conventional methods. A wide variety of catalytic
functionalization reactions of C-H bonds by the utilization of a
chelation, have been developed recently and are comprehensively
discussed in this book by leading experts. In addition, new
approaches to directed hydrometalation and directed carbometalation
as a key step are also discussed. A unique stereo- and
regioselective hydroformylation has been developed through the
utilization of directed hydrometalation. The regioselective
Mizoroki-Heck reaction is another example in which directed
carbometalation can be used to achieve a high regioselectivity.
These examples emphasize how these innovative methodologies are
contributing to different fields of chemistry.

About this Publication: Human Dignity: Lodestar for Equality in
South Africa provides an in-depth analysis of human dignity and its
relationship to equality in South African law. The author argues
that human dignity is the attributive key that unlocks the
constitutional meaning of equality and unfair discrimination.
Equality cannot be usefully debated without first asking the vital
question 'Equality of what?' The answer, it is contended, must be
'human dignity'. The philosophical and Abrahamic religious roots of
these constitutional concepts of dignity and equality are
investigated, then further explored and illustrated in the
comparative context of South African, German and Canadian
constitutional jurisprudence. Clashes and tensions between rights
inevitably occur when the equality and non-discrimination rights of
a Bill of Rights are applied horizontally, that is between subjects
of the state themselves. The human dignity of the contestants plays
a vital role in resolving such tensions and conflicts. Human
dignity moreover has a determining function when applying
constitutionally mandated restitutionary (compensatory) equality
and when determining what the legitimate extent and duration of
such restitution is. These issues are also considered in a
comparative constitutional context. Peer Reviews: 'Retired Justice
Laurie Ackermann was one of the giants of the "Mandela
Constitutional Court" appointed in 1994. His new book on human
dignity matches the weight and the profundity of his judicial
writing on the subject. It is an authoritative, lawyerly and
commanding exposition of the value that is the key to South
Africa's constitutional future-the dignity of all its peoples.'
Justice Edwin Cameron, Justice of the Constitutional Court of South
Africa 'In this work, the claim that it is the inherent dignity and
worth of every human person that must inform the interpretation and
enforcement of the constitutional right to equality is backed up,
inter alia, by a useful exposition of the Kantian concept of
dignity and an illuminating and context-sensitive engagement with
comparative constitutional law. The author's argument is
systematically developed within a range of contexts, including
anti-discrimination law, disputes over the scope and limits of
measures designed to remedy past injustices, and conflicts over the
appropriate balance between equality and freedom in cases involving
the horizontal application of the Bill of Rights. Throughout, the
author presents a well-argued and robust defence of a
constitutional vision which places the dignity of the individual at
the heart of the Constitution's transformative project. This is an
important contribution which is certain to stimulate further
analysis and debate.' - Prof Henk Botha, University of Stellenbosch
Law Faculty 'The most systematic, theoretically rich, and
intellectually provocative treatment in the academic literature to
date on the subject of human dignity in South Africa's evolving
equality jurisprudence.' Prof Sandra Liebenberg, HF Oppenheimer
Professor of Human Rights Law, University of Stellenbosch Law
Faculty
The surname Ackerman(n) had its origins in a person's occupation
and referred to a cultivator of the ground, a farmer, husbandman,
or ploughman. Today, the original use of the term is obsolete but
its legacy as a family name lives on in several variations
including, not only Ackerman and Ackermann, but also Akerman,
Eckerman, and Ockerman. The dictionary focuses on men and women who
were born with the Ackerman(n) surname, in any of its many
variations. Most of these people lived during the 1700s and 1800s,
although some lived as early as the Middle Ages or as recently as
the 1900s. Individuals are listed alphabetically by first name and
known biographical information is given in the subjects' entries.
Data includes, where available, information on birth, marriage, and
death dates and places; the names of parents, spouses, and
children; occupation; residence; religious and political
affiliations; military service; and education. New to this volume
is the family group section, which collects three generations (or
more) of a particular family into one chapter for the researchers'
easier movement through those generations. The vast majority of
information contained herein is new to this volume; however,
corrections and additions to Volume 1 have been included.
This dictionary focuses on individuals born with the Ackerman(n)
surname, in any of its variations including: Accerman, Acerman,
Acherman, Ackermen, Ackermin, Ackkermann, Acraman, Acreman,
Acremen, Aikerman, Akarman, Akerman, Akkerman, Akkermans, Akreman,
