This thesis outlines the first synthesis of a new complex branched
polymer architecture that aims to combine the benefits of
dendrimers with the simplicity of conventional polymerisation.
There is no other available literature on these remarkable
materials, dubbed hyperbranched polydendrons, due to their novelty.
The new materials were shown to have very high molecular weights
(>1,000,000 g/mol), exceptional self-assembly and encapsulation
behaviour and unparalleled functionalisation capabilities, and were
studied pharmacologically to determine their potential as oral
nanomedicine candidates. The detailed investigation of the chemical
variables involved in synthesising hyperbranched polydendrons has
shown that their self-assembly and pharmacological behaviour can be
turned on and off and fine-tuned by altering the composition of the
materials. The permeation of the self-assembled particles through
model gut epithelium suggests the potential for oral dosing of drug
loaded nanomedicines that result in circulating nanoparticles - a
research goal that is currently being pursued by several groups
around the globe.
This book is about marine seismic sources, their history, their
physical principles and their deconvolution. It is particularly
accented towards the physical aspects rather than the mathematical
principles of signature generation in water as it is these aspects
which the authors have found to be somewhat neglected. A huge
amount of research has been carried out by both commercial and
academic institutions over the years and the resulting literature
is a little daunting, to say the least. In spite of this, the
subject is intrinsically very simple and relies on a very few
fundamental physical principles, a somewhat larger number of
heuristic principles and a refreshingly small amount of blunderbuss
mathematics. As such it is still one of those subjects in which the
gifted practical engineer reigns supreme and from which many of the
important advances have originated. In Chapter 1 of the book, the
underlying physics and concepts are discussed, including pressure
and wave propagation, bubble motion, virtual images and the factors
determining choice of source. In marine reflection seismology,
almost all of the seismic data acquired currently is done with
either the airgun or the watergun, which rely on the expulsion of
air and water respectively to generate acoustic energy. As a
consequence, the discussion in this chapter is geared towards these
two sources, as is much of the rest of the book.

Childhood exposure to the rhyme and meter of poets like Poe and
Longfellow gave me a lifelong love for poetry. I'm a bivocational
pastor, ministering to seniors, and also an RN, helping mothers
birth and breastfeed babies. These callings are special to me, but
the one I've felt most deeply throughout my life has been this
creative call to write poetry. This is a republication of my second
book of poems, written between 1992-1993 or previously unpublished.
For me, poetic composition has been like preaching prophetic
burdens. And as with sermons, I learn more in putting them together
than I can ever convey in the pulpit. So, in sending forth this
poetic collection of insights and epiphanies, I can only hope the
Holy Spirit uses them to inspire and enlighten my readers as He has
blessed their author through writing them.

In this combined tale and treatise, bivocational pastor and nurse
David encounters the past. Surprised and upset to find a large
crowd in ancient dress at his favorite swimming hole, he is shocked
when some of them disrobe for a baptism ceremony, performed totally
in the nude Antiquity offers a fatal blow to the wall in David's
mind that keeps his experiences of hospital nudity from confronting
the taboos of his upbringing. When that wall topples, he gains a
new perspective on life in Bible times, a deeper theological
appreciation of human embodiment, and a pricked conscience about
the root cause of our culture's obsession with pornography. Join
David, as he unlearns deceptions as old as Eden, relearns truths as
relevant as our children's future, and faces the test of his
transformed thinking by the challenge of four skinny-dipping Bible
college students.
