Mile markers along life's highway may appear to be a series of
disconnected events. However, the miraculous encounter on Texas'
FM1960 and the author's nearly 40 year journey suggest otherwise.
Buckle up for a journey into a collection of events that provide
great insight into the discovery of purpose. The author's
apparently disconnected mile markers formed waypoints targeting
"PURPOSE" as his final destination with God being the Guide. Each
leg of his trip when considered as a whole, produced an incredible
life map. The crooked roadways winding as circuitous pathways led
uphill towards the summit of his calling in life. His journey
revealed in stories, processes, and related Scriptures illustrate
the many ways God speaks to us. Further, the writings encourage
readers to prayerfully, thoughtfully, and truthfully examine their
own mile markers. A chapter is included to assist this discovery
process. Why publish this discovery process? Is it vanity? Is it
therapeutic? According to the author, he makes public his personal
experiences to encourage, inspire, and share hope/peace/joy ... to
illustrate that God is real and plays a visible role in our lives.
It is God that calls us to purpose, equips us for service, and
guides us to completion.
This groundbreaking text examines how artists on stage
consciously perform age and aging. From Shakespeare to Beckett,
dialogue and stage directions reveal varying understandings of age.
"Staging Age "explores how performers respond to audience
expectations, offering conscious--and unconscious--portrayals of
the spectrum of age to their audiences. This essay collection is
the first to address issues of age and performance in a variety of
media, including theatre, film, and dance.
Detective Sara Mackenzie James, Mac to her friends, was in control
of her life. She called the shots, and she made the rules. Or so
she thought. She believed this until she read the Tribune headlines
and felt her whole life begin to fall apart. For fifteen years Sara
had chased a serial killer that had eluded capture. Now, the
headlines trumpeted his return as a series of new murders began to
transpire along the I-70 Corridor. But, are the headlines right? As
Sara digs deeper into the case she soon discovers there is more to
what is going on than what the headlines indicate. In the process
of looking for the truth Sara discovers Jake Maxwell, an unwilling
traveler from a time long forgotten. Does Jake hold the key to all
Sara has been searching for? Fate has brought them together, but
will they figure out why in time? Together they realize their goals
may not be as different as they had first believed. In searching
for answers they may find themselves face-to-face with the truth: a
truth that will change them both forever.
Explore the concept of formation in pastoral counseling from a
variety of perspectives Two dozen of the most prominent clinicians
and scholars in the field reflect on The Formation of Pastoral
Counselors from clinical, theological and theoretical perspectives.
This unique book explores the challenges to the personal and
professional formation of pastoral counselors in a cultural and
historic context that's radically different from the era when the
profession first emerged as a specialized ministry. Contributors
examine formation from a variety of contexts and perspectives,
including spirituality and gender, address theological education
and intercultural issues, and present emerging models for pastoral
counselors. The Formation of Pastoral Counselors is a practical
guide for educators working to shape curricula and training
programs to the shifting context in which pastoral counselors are
formed for ministry, service, and lifelong learning. This unique
book examines ideas about appropriate content and processes for the
formation of pastoral care professionals and looks at specialized
contextual training models that form their emerging identities. The
book's contributors call on extensive experience in pastoral
theology, care, and counseling to explore the essential components
of formation across different contexts; how those contextual
realities change the delivery systems; the epistemological nature
of formation; reasons for the limited roles that formal theological
education and spiritual experience seem to play at the moment; and
why formation is rarely formally addressed in pastoral counseling
training. Topics discussed in The Formation of Pastoral Counselors
include: the turn to formation the goals of theological education
core elements of pastoral theology developing spiritual practices
diversity pastoral counseling training programs race and ethnicity
in the formation of pastoral counselors cultural identity
intercultural contexts practical relevancy in training gender
identity and sexual orientation economic disparity Models and
practices examined in The Formation of Pastoral Counselors include:
parallel charting clinician narratives group supervision
Benedictine spirituality academic and clinical training at the
Claremont School of Theology the model of formation at the Virginia
Institute of Pastoral Care (VIPCare) and much more The Formation of
Pastoral Counselors is an essential guide for pastoral counselors,
faculty in pastoral theological care and counseling, and training
directors in pastoral counseling centers.
The treatment, assessment, intervention and evaluation of sexual
deviants are topics that have experienced a recent resurgence in
the mental health fields, as the number of reported sex abuse cases
continues to rise. Practitioners are increasingly faced with both
criminal and non-criminal sex offenders with a variety of
backgrounds, abuses, and treatment history. Specialists and
non-specialists alike are often unprepared and ill-equipped for the
myriad of disorders prevalent in today's society. "Treating Sexual
Offenders" provides the therapist with a guide to the assessment,
treatment, and evaluation of a number of different disorders,
including fetishisms, transvestic fetishisms, exhibitionism,
frottage, pedophilia, sexual sadism, sexual masochism, telephone
scatologia, voyeurism, rape, child molestation, and incest. Through
extensive consideration of current research, theory and practice,
the authors provide the clinician with the means to have a
continued positive impact on the sex offender, from assessment to
post-treatment evaluation and follow-up.

This book is not merely a history or a biography, but a testimony
of how the hand of Lord used me with all of my failures to his
glory. After more than 60 years of missionary service and seeing
the hand of God work miracle after miracle, I am excited to share
with you His mighty works that I witnessed while serving Him in
Timbuktu and beyond. This book conveys the exciting adventures and
wonderful joy of serving the Lord. I trust that through this book
you will be encouraged in your service to God wherever that might
be whether in Kalamazoo or Timbuktu.
Considered the most original thinker in the Italian philosophical
tradition, Giambattista Vico has been the object of much scholarly
attention but little consensus. In this new interpretation, David
L. Marshall examines the entirety of Vico s oeuvre and situates him
in the political context of early modern Naples. He demonstrates
Vico s significance as a theorist who adapted the discipline of
rhetoric to modern conditions. Marshall presents Vico s work as an
effort to resolve a contradiction. As a professor of rhetoric at
the University of Naples, Vico had a deep investment in the
explanatory power of classical rhetorical thought, especially that
of Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian. Yet as a historian of the
failure of Naples as a self-determining political community, he had
no illusions about the possibility or worth of democratic and
republican systems of government in the post-classical world. As
Marshall demonstrates, by jettisoning the assumption that rhetoric
only illuminates direct, face-to-face interactions between orator
and auditor, Vico reinvented rhetoric for a modern world in which
the Greek polis and the Roman res publica are no longer
paradigmatic for political thought.
The Encyclopedia of Social Theory contains over 500 entries
varying from concise definitions of key terms and short biographies
of key theorists to comprehensive surveys of leading concepts,
debates, themes and schools. The object of the Encyclopedia has
been to give thorough coverage of the central topics in theoretical
sociology as well as terms and concepts in the methodology and
philosophy of social science. Although 106 theorists are given
entries, the emphasis of the work is on the elucidation of ideas
rather than intellectual biography. The Encyclopedia covers the
leading contemporary domains of debate on social theory and the
classical legacies of social thinkers from the nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries, giving proper balance to both the European and
North American traditions and to important new developments in the
global self-understanding of sociology.
Social theory has become one of the most vigorous specialisms of
sociology in recent years. This is in part due to the considerable
overlaps of social theory with other disciplinary areas, such as
cultural and media studies, anthropology, and political theory, and
to the cross-disciplinary nature of theoretical approaches such as
feminism and psychoanalysis, and new fields such as postcolonial
studies. The editors have therefore worked to produce in the
Encyclopedia of Social Theory a first-call reference for students
and researchers across the social sciences and humanities with an
interest in contemporary theory and the modern history of
ideas.
The Encyclopedia has been authored by leading international
specialists in the field under the direction of a well-balanced
editorial team. It is comprehensively cross-referenced and all
larger entries carry bibliographies. There is a full index.
When Critical Multiculturalism Meets Mathematics details the
development and outcomes of a teacher professional development
project that merged multiculturalism and mathematics. In six
compact chapters the authors describe the impetus for their
multi-year project and present rich case studies of nine teacher
participants. The cases stand alone as compelling reading, yet
Marshall et al. extend beyond their distinctiveness to explain the
statistical data related to the project's broader impact.
Emphasizing both qualitative and quantitative findings makes this
book ideal for novice researchers interested in mixed method study.
Likewise, the authors unveil the anatomy and a few complexities of
conducting research in the real world contexts of schools including
participant recruitment and resolution of unanticipated matters
that can arise within research teams. A unique twist in the final
chapter is Marshall et al.'s critique of their own missteps as
researchers, which are used skillfully and unobtrusively to proffer
tips for future studies. They conclude by theorizing affirmed
intersectionality, identified as the critical element that
facilitated teachers' recognition and acceptance of the
compatibility between the study's two components.

Aging Men, Masculinities and Modern Medicine explores the multiple
socio-historical contexts surrounding men's aging bodies in modern
medicine from a global perspective. The first of its kind, it
investigates the interrelated aspects of aging, masculinities and
biomedicine, allowing for a timely reconsideration of the
conceptualisation of aging men within the recent explosion of
social science studies on men's health and biotechnologies
including anti-aging perspectives. This book discusses both healthy
and diseased states of aging men in medical practices, bringing
together theoretical and empirical conceptualisations. Divided into
four parts it covers: Historical epistemology of aging, bodies and
masculinity and the way in which the social sciences have theorised
the aging body and gender. Material practices and processes by
which biotechnology, medical assemblages and men's aging bodies
relate to concepts of health and illness. Aging experience and its
impact upon male sexuality and identity. The importance of men's
roles and identities in care-giving situations and medical
practices. Highlighting how aging men's bodies serve as
trajectories for understanding wider issues of masculinity, and the
way in which men's social status and men's roles are made in
medical cultures, this innovative volume offers a multidisciplinary
dialogue between sociology of health and illness, anthropology of
the body and gender studies.
William Beaudine began his tenure in film as an assistant to the
legendary D. W. Griffith. At the height of his career, Beaudine
worked for every major studio and directed many greats of the
silent era including Mabel Normand, George Sidney, Laura LaPlante,
and Tom Mix. When Mary Pickford returned to the screen after a
year-long hiatus, she chose Beaudine to direct her comeback film,
Little Annie Rooney. Beaudine's career continued through the sound
era and well into golden age of television and beyond, where he
worked on such programs as The Green Hornet and Lassie. In his
unsurpassed employment of 60 years in the business, Beaudine racked
up more than 500 films and in excess of 350 television programs.
Until his death at age 78, he was the oldest active director in the
business. Just before he died, The Canadian, his 1926 film starring
Thomas Meighan, was acknowledged as one of the best films of the
pre-sound era and received the Film Critics Award of the New York
Arts Institute. In this detailed biography, author Wendy Marshall
chronicles Beaudine's swift rise through the ranks, his triumph as
one of the most successful directors of British comedies, his
accumulation and loss of personal fortunes, his fall from fame, and
his prolific work in television. Marshall corrects much
misinformation that has been written about the director and has
compiled the most complete list of his directorial credits to date.
This volume will serve as the ultimate authority on William
Beaudine's life and career.
A history of how neural, behavioural and communicative
subdisciplines coalesced in neuroscience to create a promising
approach to understanding the relation of mind to brain. It
chronicles the expansion of prominent centres of research and the
development of innovative apparatus and concepts.
Public policy responses to child sexual abuse are dominated by
interventions designed to take effect only after offenders have
already begun offending, and after children have already been
sexually abused. Comparatively little attention has been given to
alternative prevention strategies - particularly to those aimed at
preventing sexual abuse before it might otherwise occur.
Considerable knowledge has been accumulated on the characteristics,
modus operandi and persistence of offenders, the characteristics,
circumstances and outcomes for victims, and the physical and social
settings in which sexual abuse occurs, but little work has been
done to systematically apply this knowledge to prevention. This
book aims to fulfill this objective through integrating clinical
and criminological concepts and knowledge to inform a more
comprehensive and effective public policy approach to preventing
child sexual abuse. Empirical and theoretical knowledge concerning
child sexual abuse is integrated with broader developments in
evidence-based crime and child maltreatment prevention, leading to
new ideas about understanding and preventing child sexual abuse.
This book will be essential reading for anybody with interests in
this field.
