How much has human history been influenced by the earth and its processes? This volume in the Science 101 series describes how both slow changes and rapid, violent, ones have impacted the development of civilizations throughout history. Slow changes include variations in climate, progressive development of types of tools and sources of energy, and changes in the types of food that people consume. Violent changes include volcanic eruptions such as the one at Toba 75,000 years ago, which may have caused diversification of people into different races, and the eruption of Santorini in 1640 BC, which may have destroyed Minoan civilization. Other disasters are Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the tsunami in the Indian Ocean in 2004. Earth Science and Human History 101 describes basic principles of geology and shows how the earth affected history and is affecting present events. The volume has four sections: BLProcesses in the atmosphere, oceans, and rivers BLPlate tectonics BLThe conflict between the evidence for evolution during the long history of the earth and the beliefs of creationists BLResources and the environment The volume includes a glossary, numerous illustrations, and a bibliography of works useful for further research.
This book consists of a series of letters written by a young man during WWII. He went from banker to bombardier. He underwent starvation, depravation and his moral conflict with killing the enemy to a fear of being able to do his duty. Dead bodies laying around, flies, filth, hurricanes, no smokes, no candy, no female companionship. These are some of the things he lived with all the while flying in a cramped nose of a B-24 bomber with his pet dog beside him on all forty eight missions. He earned the moniker "Torchman Tucker" after firebombing a village which gave him much personal conflict. He says in a letter to his mother, "I wonder what God thinks of me." Just before his first bombing mission, he wrote of his apprehension of being able to do the right thing for his crewmates and country. His letters also tell a story about America. His crew was all boys by today's standard from all over the country. Busy with life farming, banking, and all the other normal things were suddenly immersed in the business of war. The farmer became their pilot, the banker became the bombardier, and the recent high school graduate became a waist gunner and so the story goes. In the end, they all did what was expected of them and they returned to America quietly trying to fit in society. But their lives had been changed forever.
Th is book details the process of rearing our son Joel, autistic since birth. It contains many practical suggestions for parents, teachers, and community leaders for how to deal with children and adults diagnosed as autistic. Th e philosophies and suggestions contained in these pages are based on the trials, joys, successes, and failures along the pathway of parenting. While the lens is through the eyes of a parent, much of the information is applicable to educators, employers, and people whose lives intersect with autism in some way.
Cilia are tiny microtubule-based organelles projecting from the plasma membrane of practically all cells in the body. In the past 10 years a flurry of research has indicated a crucial role of this long-neglected organelle in the development and function of the central nervous system. A common theme of these studies is the critical dependency of signal transduction of the Sonic hedgehog, and more recently, Wnt signaling pathways upon cilia to regulate fate decisions and morphogenesis. Both primary and motile cilia also play crucial roles in the function of the nervous system, including the primary processing of sensory information, the control of body mass, and higher functions such as behavior and cognition, serving as "antennae" for neurons to sense and process their environment. In this book we describe the structure and function of cilia and the various tissues throughout the brain and spinal cord that are dependent upon cilia for their proper development and function.
The Other Black Church: Alternative Christian Movements and the Struggle for Black Freedom examines the movements led by Father Divine, Charles Mason, and Albert Cleage (later known as Jaramogi Abebe Agyeman) as alternative Christian movements in the middle of the twentieth century that radically re-envisioned the limits and possibilities of Black citizenship. These movements not only rethink the value and import of Christian texts and reimagined the role of the Black Christian prophetic tradition, but they also outlined a new model of protest that challenged the language and logic of Black essentialism, economic development, and the role of the state. By placing these movements in conversation with the long history of Black theology and Black religious studies, this book suggests that alternative Christian movements are essential for thinking about African American critiques of and responses to the failures of U.S.-based democracy. These prophets of Black theological thought and their attention to the limits of the state and traditional Black religious formations are most fully appreciated when studied in light of their conversations and interactions with other key Black prophetic and theological figures of the mid-twentieth century. Ultimately, The Other Black Church will use those conversations and archives from these movements to highlight their protest of the racial state, to explore the limits of the Black church, and to argue for their continued significance for thinking about the variety and vibrancy of Black protest, specifically Black religious protest, during the twentieth century.
