We all have great intentions when it comes to raising our
children. We want them to succeed, and above all to surrender their
lives to the lordship of Christ. As a father of four boys and a
twenty-five-year veteran of school administration, I understand
these goals. I also understand the busyness of daily life-how days
merge into weeks as hurried lifestyles spin out of control, leaving
us wondering how our toddlers became teenagers. This book
introduces you to a simple, biblically based plan for raising
servant-leaders for Christ. Whether your child is eighteen months
or eighteen years old, this book will guide you through the process
of preparation for the race that awaits him in this world.
We will walk through specific and practical things you can do to
build a family plan. Being deliberate and focusing on creating
depth in your child's faith is the first step to preparing him or
her to run with the horses-"If you have run with footmen and they
have tired you out, then how can you compete with horses? If you
fall down in a land of peace, how will you do in the thicket of the
Jordan?" (Jeremiah 12:5).
Tony Scott was a thrill seeker who lived and loved life to the
fullest... He was also one of the more cutting edge filmmakers of
an entire generation. From the grey, industrial skies of Northern
England, Tony followed in his brother, Ridley's, filmmaking
footsteps, joining him at a lucrative commercial directing company.
His filmmaking journey was an uphill battle, and he stumbled out of
the gate while his peers found instant success. And then, he
directed Top Gun, and changed the trajectory not only for his life
and career, but for the action-movie industry as a whole. The rest
of his career was a rollercoaster of blockbuster hits, personal
films, and confounding failures, as Scott carved up action cinema
for more than two decades with his own brand of violence and a
flair for the dramatic. Then, in August of 2012, Tony Scott was
gone. His death sent shockwaves across the industry, and left a
hole in genre filmmaking that has yet to be filled. With original
interviews from actors, cinematographers, and writers who crossed
Tony Scott's path and extensive research, Scott's larger-than-life
persona is covered in great detail, from the early days of his life
and career, to its untimely end.
John McTiernan is one of the most influential American action
filmmakers of his generation. Educated at the American Film
Institute, influenced by European cinematic style, McTiernan hit
the stratosphere as a director with a trio of groundbreaking action
films: Predator, Die Hard, and The Hunt for Red October. The rest
of his career became a mixture of successes and epic, infamous
failures, including Last Action Hero, one of the most colossal
misfires in the history of Hollywood. As the 21st century arrived,
McTiernan's career and personal life would come unraveled, as he
would be indicted and briefly imprisoned for his involvement in a
wiretapping scandal that shook Tinseltown. Through extensive
research including news reports, biographies, commentaries,
interviews, and behind-the-scenes details, the story of John
McTiernan and his tumultuous life and career is mapped out from the
beginning, through his successes, his failures, his incredibly
extensive legal battles, all the way to his multiple attempts at a
comeback.
A major problem with our economy today is that the real champions
of economic prosperity are not effectively exercising their clout
and influence. Independent corporate directors have a higher
calling - to use their influence for addressing the corporate risks
that threaten the long term economic sustainability of the private
sector. Job growth, education proficiency, equitable pay scales and
upward mobility require private sector engagement but achievement
of these objectives is hindered by corporate welfare, government
dependency, misguided campaign spending, special interest
crony-capitalism, victim/entitlement mentality and the rising
income gap, all of which I call "tone-at-the-bottom" corporate
risks. Independent corporate directors hire and fire the private
sector CEOs and have oversight responsibilities for millions of
businesses. They establish the compensation, incentives and
disincentives for the CEOs. They impact all industries and
economies around the world. Unfortunately, they allow CEOs to
compete with one another for public sector favors at the detriment
of the private sector causing significant sub-optimization of the
economy. They need a unification principle and a pledge not to take
any actions that harm the structure under which their corporations
operate, i.e., the private sector. Without it, their actions or
lack of actions could significantly damage the capitalistic
economies that are the envy of the world. In this book, Dr. Taylor,
a professional independent corporate director and product of the
Detroit ghettos, discusses corporate governance best practices and
pathways to secure the coveted director seats. He outlines some
thoughts on how independent corporate directors, as captains of the
private sector, might better carry out their fiduciary "duty to
monitor." Moreover, he posits forward thinking solutions and
corporate social responsibilities for independent corporate
directors based on the premise that "if we don't monitor
'the-tone-at-the-bottom', we will be doomed to fall from the top"
as evidenced by the economic collapses in dependency laden
economies, such as Detroit, Greece and even Ancient Rome. Exclusive
attention for the corporate mantra, the "tone-at-the-top" is
inadequate in today's society. In fact, it harms long term
corporate sustainability and the private sectors of societies. The
mantra must be supplemented with the tone-at-the-bottom mindset. We
cannot sit idly by while the fabric of capitalism and the structure
under which our corporations operate is destroyed at the ballot box
by the misinformed and disinterested. We must get our message out
and sing the praises of the private sector. Please be aware that
50% of the net book sales will be donated to charity, including the
Cranbrook Horizons Upward Program, a non-profit educational
institution in Detroit, Michigan, that assists inner city
disadvantaged youth through college preparation and career
development programs.
