This important Handbook explores and evaluates dynamic environments
and the appropriate strategic responses to them in the 21st
century. Drawing together a collection of 29 original chapters, the
Handbook makes an invaluable contribution to theory and practice by
stimulating disciplined, rigorous and imaginative enquiry into the
relationship between strategy and foresight. Leading scholars in
the field of strategic management are brought together to offer
innovative and multi-disciplinary perspectives on the past, present
and future of strategy formation and foresight. In so doing, they
challenge research in four key areas: strategy and foresight
processes; strategy innovation for the future; understanding the
future; and strategically responding to the future. The Handbook of
Research on Strategy and Foresight is a comprehensive resource that
will be invaluable for academics, students and practitioners
interested in this important phenomenon.
Nearly half of all undergraduate students enroll in a two-year
college, and many STEM students take their introductory chemistry
courses at a two-year college. The educational pathway of these
students is often complex and nonlinear towards completion of a
certificate, degree and/or transfer to a four-year program. These
non-traditional pathways present distinct challenges in and out of
the classroom for the educators who are trying to serve this
important and diverse group of students. This book provides some
insight into the current state of chemistry education reform at
two-year colleges, provides specific ways to address some of the
challenges of educating two-year college students, and reports
strategies for success in chemistry at the two-year college. The
contributing authors are chemical educators who have presented at
one or more of our Strategies Promoting Success of Two-year College
Students symposia that have been held at the Spring ACS National
meetings since 2015.
Volume of new essays investigating Kleist's influences and sources
both literary and philosophical, their role as paradigms, and the
ways in which he responded to and often shattered them. Heinrich
von Kleist (1777-1811) was a rebel who upset canonization by
employing his predecessors and contemporaries as what Steven Howe
calls "inspirational foils." It was precisely a keen awareness of
literary and philosophical traditions that allowed Kleist to
shatter prevailing paradigms. Though little is known about what
specifically Kleist read, the frequent allusions in his enduringly
modern oeuvre indicate fruitful dialogues with both canonical and
marginal works of European literature, spanning antiquity (The Old
Testament, Sophocles), the Early Modern Period (Shakespeare, De
Zayas), the late Enlightenment (Wieland, Goethe, Schiller), and the
first eleven years of the nineteenth century (Mereau, Brentano,
Collin). Kleist's works also evidence encounters with his
philosophical precursors and contemporaries, including the ancient
Greeks (Aristotle) and representatives of all phases of
Enlightenment thought (Montesquieu, Rousseau, Ferguson, Spalding,
Fichte, Kant, Hegel), economic theories (Smith, Kraus), and
developments in anthropology, sociology, and law. This volume of
new essays sheds light on Kleist's relationship to his literary and
philosophical influences and on their function as paradigms to
which his writings respond.
"In the Beginning was Napoleon"--"Napoleon and no end": Inspiration
Bonaparte explores German responses to Bonaparte in literature,
philosophy, painting, science, education, music, and film from his
rise to the present. Two hundred years after his death, Napoleon
Bonaparte (1769-1821) continues to resonate as a fascinating,
ambivalent, and polarizing figure. Differences of opinion as to
whether Bonaparte should be viewed as the executor of the
principles of the French Revolution or as the figure who was
principally responsible for their corruption are as pronounced
today as they were at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
Contributing to what had been an uneasy German relationship with
the French Revolution, the rise of Bonaparte was accompanied by a
pattern of Franco-German hostilities that inspired both
enthusiastic support and outraged dissent in the German-speaking
states. The fourteen essays that comprise Inspiration Bonaparte
examine the mythologization of Napoleon in German literature of the
nineteenth and twentieth centuries and explore the significant
impact of Napoleonic occupation on a broad range of fields
including philosophy, painting, politics, the sciences, education,
and film. As the contributions from leading scholars emphasize, the
contradictory attitudes toward Bonaparte held by so many prominent
German thinkers are a reflection of his enduring status as a figure
through whom the trauma of shattered late-Enlightenment
expectations of sociopolitical progress and evolving concepts of
identity politics is mediated.

The concept of Layered Morphologies is a theoretical and
methodological approach that investigates the coevolutionary nature
of architecture and settlements, to propose an organic and
integrated approach to their reading, protection and design
enhancement. Transcending some usual spatial ontologies and
operating across interdisciplinary fields, it promotes a renewed
notion of built heritage as historicised architecture, and
landscape as a structure of structures, where any act of
modification should start from recognising pre-existing signs,
typo-morphological structures, and writing of the ground and formal
orders. Advancing critical-theoretical propositions while verifying
their operational value in the case study of Fenghuang (Shaanxi) -
a famous historic and cultural town in China - the methodology
reveals a new reading and the potential underlying of Chinese
settlements forms. Architectural and urban-rural design projects
are not the colonisation of a void (a tabula rasa) but rather an
understanding and interpretation of an existing text with its
erasures and absences (tabula plena), which also presents the
principles for future writings.
