Politics and the Past offers an original, multidisciplinary exploration of the growing public controversy over reparations for historical injustices. Demonstrating that 'reparations politics' has become one of the most important features of international politics in recent years, the authors analyze why this is the case and show that reparations politics can be expected to be a major aspect of international affairs in coming years. In addition to broad theoretical and philosophical reflection, the book includes discussions of the politics of reparations in specific countries and regions, including the United States, France, Latin America, Japan, Canada, and Rwanda. The volume presents a nuanced, historically grounded, and critical perspective on the many campaigns for reparations currently afoot in a variety of contexts around the world. All readers working or teaching in the fields of transitional justice, the politics of memory, and social movements will find this book a rich and provocative contribution to this complex debate.
Exploring contemporary Okinawan culture, politics, and historical memory, this book argues that the long Japanese tradition of defining Okinawa as a subordinate and peripheral part of Japan means that all claims of Okinawan distinctiveness necessarily become part of the larger debate over contemporary identity. The contributors trace the renascence of the debate in the burst of cultural and political expression that has flowered in the past decade, with the rapid growth of local museums and memorials and the huge increase in popularity of distinctive Okinawan music and literature, as well as in political movements targeting both U.S. military bases and Japanese national policy on ecological, developmental, and equity grounds. A key strategy for claiming and shaping Okinawan identity is the mobilization of historical memory of the recent past, particularly of the violent subordination of Okinawan interests to those of the Japanese and American governments in war and occupation. Its intertwining themes of historical memory, nationality, ethnicity, and cultural conflict in contemporary society address central issues in anthropology, sociology, contemporary history, Asian Studies, international relations, cultural studies, and post-colonial studies. In late 1945 local Japanese turned their energies toward creating new behaviors and institutions that would give young people better skills to combat repression at home and coercion abroad. They rapidly transformed their political culture-policies, institutions, and public opinion-to create a more equitable, democratic and peaceful society. Post-Fascist Japan explores this phenomenon, focusing on a group of highly educated Japanese based in the city of Kamakura, where the new political culture was particularly visible. The book argues that these leftist elites, many of whom had been seen as 'the enemy' during the war, saw the problem as one of fascism, an ideology that had succeeded because it had addressed real problems. They turned their efforts to overtly political-legal systems but also to ostensibly non-political and community institutions such as universities, art museums, local tourism, and environmental policies, aiming not only for reconciliation over the past but also to reduce the anxieties that had drawn so many towards fascism. By focusing on people who had an outsized influence on Japan's political culture, Hein's study is local, national, and transnational. She grounds her discussion using specific personalities, showing their ideas about 'post-fascism', how they implemented them and how they interacted with the American occupiers.

Cultural productions in the Third Reich often served explicit
propaganda functions of legitimating racism and glorifying war and
militarism. Likewise, the proliferation of domestic and romance
films in Nazi Germany also represented an ideological stance.
Rather than reinforcing traditional gender role divisions and the
status quo of the nuclear family, these films were much more
permissive about desire and sexuality than previously assumed.
Focusing on German romance films, domestic melodramas, and home
front films from 1933 to 1945, Nazi Film Melodrama shows how
melodramatic elements in Nazi cinema functioned as part of a
project to move affect, body, and desire beyond the confines of
bourgeois culture and participate in a curious modernization of
sexuality engineered to advance the imperialist goals of the Third
Reich. Offering a comparative analysis of Nazi productions with
classical Hollywood films of the same era, Laura Heins argues that
German fascist melodramas differed from their American counterparts
in their negative views of domesticity and in their use of a more
explicit antibourgeois rhetoric. Nazi melodramas, film writing, and
popular media appealed to viewers by promoting liberation from
conventional sexual morality and familial structures, presenting
the Nazi state and the individual as dynamic and revolutionary.
Some spectators objected to the eroticization and modernization of
the public sphere under Nazism, however, pitting Joseph Goebbels'
Ministry of Propaganda against more conservative film audiences in
a war over the very status of domesticity and the shape of the
family. Drawing on extensive archival research, this perceptive
study highlights the seemingly contradictory aspects of gender
representation and sexual morality in Nazi-era cinema.
