This book questions the common understanding of party political behaviour, explaining some of the sharp differences in political behaviour through a focused case study-drawing systematically on primary and archival research-of the Australian Labor Party's political and policy directions during select periods in which it was out of office at the federal level: from 1967-72, 1975-83, and 1996-2001. Why is it that some Oppositions contest elections with an extensive array of detailed policies, many of which contrast with the approach of the government at the time, while others can be widely criticised as 'policy lazy' and opportunistic, seemingly capitulating to the government of the day? Why do some Oppositions lurch to the right, while others veer leftward? Each of these periods was, in its own way, crucial in the party's history, and each raises important questions about Opposition behaviour. The book examines the factors that shaped the overall direction in which the party moved during its time in Opposition, including whether it was oriented towards emphasising programmes traditionally associated with social democrats, such as pensions, unemployment support, and investment in public health, education, infrastructure, and publicly owned enterprises, as well as policies aimed at reducing the exploitation of workers. In each period of Opposition examined, an argument is made as to why Labor moved in a particular direction, and how this period compared to the other periods surveyed. Discussion of issues of professionalism and acculturation of teachers exemplifies the tension that arises in modern educational systems across the world between teacher accountability and teacher autonomy and argues that masterliness in education can only be acquired through the professional freedom afforded by teacher autonomy within empowering frameworks of professional development. Several chapters deliberate the relationship between the roles of schools and higher education institutions in both initial and continuing teacher education at master s level, providing argument and evidence to show that this partnership is crucial to the effectiveness of the professional development that supports improved outcomes for learners. First full examination of why and how certain locations were chosen for opposition to power, and the meaning they conveyed. The direct contestation of power played a crucial role in early medieval politics. Such actions, often expressed through violence, reveal much about established authorities, power and lordship. Here the hitherto neglected role of place and landscape in acts of opposition and rebellion is explored for its meaning and significance to the protagonists. The book includes consideration of a range of factors relevant to the choice of location for such events, and examines the declarations and motivations of political actors, from disaffected princes to independently minded nobles, as well as those who responded to rebellion, to show how places and landscapes became used in political disputes. These include both "public" and "private", religious, urban and rural space. Covering a long period in England and northern France, from the late Carolingian period through to the emergence of cross-Channel polities in the aftermath of the Norman Conquest, this book casts valuable light on the political relations of the early and central Middle Ages.
A number of excellent textbooks on general ecology are currently available but' to date' none have been dedicated to the study of soil ecology. This is important because the soil' as the 'epidermis' of our planet' is the major component of the terrestrial biosphere. In the present age' it is difficult to understand how one could be interested in general ecology without having some knowledge of the soil and further' to study the soil without taking into account its biological components and ecological setting. It is this deficiency that the two authors' Patrick Lavelle and Alister Spain' have wished to address in writing their text. A reading of this work' entitled 'Soil Ecology'' shows it to be very complete and extremely innovative in its conceptual plan. In addition' it follows straightforwardly through a development which unfolds over four substantial chapters. Firstly' the authors consider the soil as a porous and finely divided medium of b- organomineral origin' whose physical structure and organisation foster the development of a multitude of specifically adapted organisms (microbial communities' roots of higher plants' macro-invertebrates).
In Legislating International Organization, Kathryn Lavelle argues against the commonly-held idea that key international organizations are entities unto themselves, immune from the influence and pressures of individual states' domestic policies. Covering the history of the IMF and World Bank from their origins, she shows that domestic political constituencies in advanced industrial states have always been important drivers of international financial institution policy. Lavelle focuses in particular on the U.S. Congress, tracing its long history of involvement with these institutions and showing how it wields significant influence. Drawing from archival research and interviews with members and staff, Lavelle shows that Congress is not particularly hostile to the multilateralism inherent in the IMF and World Bank, and has championed them at several key historical junctures. Congress is not uniformly supportive of these institutions, however. As Lavelle illustrates, it is more defensive of its constitutionally designated powers and more open to competing interest group concerns than legislatures in other advanced industrial states. Legislating International Organization will reshape how we think about how the U.S. Congress interacts with international institutions and more broadly about the relationship of domestic politics to global governance throughout the world. This is especially relevant given the impact of 2008 financial crisis, which has made the issue of multilateralism in American politics more important than ever.
Between the two world wars my father took an interest in poems and rhymes from the Great War and wrote some 30 of them down in a notebook along with other poetry. This book is based on those poems and the Great War. In 1914 Britain was reluctantly drawn into war with Germany in support of France, an inevitability that had been forecast since the signing of the Entente Cordiale. Germany had the biggest army in the world and was the belligerent by declaring war against Russia and through that act, France, then England, by treaty or agreement, was also committed. In 1914 Britain's had a pathetically small army but by 1918 it was equal in size to the armies of Germany and France, and was taking the brunt of the fighting alongside a French army weakened by mutiny and low morale. Throughout the war the BEF fought heroically and courageously, at times forced to retreat, but they were never beaten. The enemy never managed to break through to the important centres or the Channel ports, nor did they ever break the British spirit. Yet the BEF were scorned by the powers that be at home and treated with ignominy, Lloyd George failed disgracefully to stand by the General Staff in France who, without doubt in some instances, made mistakes, they were however guided by their conscience and better judgement in their attempts to bring the war to an early conclusion. I hope that this book goes some way to restoring their credibility and shows the efforts of those who were there in a fairer perspective. About the author Terence Lavelle was born in Blackburn Lancashire in 1935 and is an old boy of St Joseph's and St Albans schools, an 'Owdkellyboy'. He served an apprenticeship with a Blackburn engineering Company and rather than do National Service he signed on with the colours. Commitments to family life saw him take the 3 year option to leave in 1958 and work in engineering as a journeyman throughout the UK and abroad for a UK company. Later following a career in Local Government he and his wife worked in their private business before selling up to a London based company and retiring in 1998. |
