This book explores the evolving roles of energy stakeholders and
geopolitical considerations, leveraging on the dizzying array of
planned and actual projects for solar, wind, hydropower,
waste-to-energy, and nuclear power in the region. Over the next few
decades, favorable economics for low carbon energy sources combined
with stagnant oil demand growth will facilitate a shift away from
today's fossil fuel-based energy system. Will the countries of the
Middle East and North Africa be losers or leaders in this energy
transition? Will state-society relations undergo a change as a
result? It suggests that ultimately, politics more so than
economics or environmental pressure will determine the speed,
scope, and effects of low carbon energy uptake in the region. This
book is of interest to academics working in the fields of
International Relations, International Political Economy,
Comparative Political Economy, Energy Economics, and International
Business. Consultants, practitioners, policy-makers, and risk
analysts will also find the insights helpful.

This book aims at discussing the development of MOOCs in China in
relation to MOOCs in other countries or areas. Based on the history
of MOOCs, we summarize and compare the development of MOOCs in
China and other countries with empirical evidence from a
comprehensive investigation about MOOCs in Asian, United States,
and Europe. Then we discuss about the importance of MOOCs in China
and its role in the reform of higher education system, and the
model of teaching and learning in China. After all, we provide
suggestions about how to improve MOOCs at the national,
institutional, and individual level. In this book, we analyse and
present the current construction and development of MOOCs in China
from four dimensions including platforms, courses, learners,
colleges and universities based on huge empirical evidence from a
comprehensive investigation of 14 platforms, 42 universities, 1388
MOOCs, and 22895 learners. Our investigation mainly focused on
seven topics: platform construction and operation, learner groups,
curriculum organization form, teaching interaction, learning
evaluation model, learning support service, and courses
certification and academic score system. Based on the
investigation, we found there is an emerging trend of collaboration
among government, universities and enterprise in the development of
MOOCs in China, which provides great opportunities to build an
innovative educational service system for all kinds of learners. We
also discuss our findings in relation to the corresponding
development of MOOCs in United States, Europe and other regions and
then focus on the unique challenges that China faces, such as the
lack of deep learning in MOOCs, the low information literacy and
self-regulated learning abilities of MOOC learners, the lack of
individualized support for MOOC learners, and so on. At last, this
book summarizes the overall development of MOOCs in China and other
countries and then put forward the future trends and suggestions in
this field.

Over the years, advances in the business world as well as the
changing of diverse application contexts, have caused Data
Warehousing and Data Mining to become more paramount in our
society. The two share many common issues and are commonly
interrelated. Integrations of Data Warehousing, Data Mining and
Database Technologies: Innovative Approaches provides a
comprehensive compilation of knowledge covering state-of-the-art
developments and research, as well as current innovative activities
in data warehousing and mining. This book focuses on the
integration between the fields of data warehousing and data mining,
with emphasis on the applicability to real world problems and
provides a broad perspective on the future of these two cohesive
topic areas.
Digital Functions and Data Reconstruction: Digital-Discrete Methods
provides a solid foundation to the theory of digital functions and
its applications to image data analysis, digital object
deformation, and data reconstruction. This new method has a unique
feature in that it is mainly built on discrete mathematics with
connections to classical methods in mathematics and computer
sciences. Digitally continuous functions and gradually varied
functions were developed in the late 1980s. A. Rosenfeld (1986)
proposed digitally continuous functions for digital image analysis,
especially to describe the "continuous" component in a digital
image, which usually indicates an object. L. Chen (1989) invented
gradually varied functions to interpolate a digital surface when
the boundary appears to be continuous. In theory, digitally
continuous functions are very similar to gradually varied
functions. Gradually varied functions are more general in terms of
being functions of real numbers; digitally continuous functions are
easily extended to the mapping from one digital space to another.
This will be the first book about digital functions, which is an
important modern research area for digital images and digitalized
data processing, and provides an introduction and comprehensive
coverage of digital function methods. Digital Functions and Data
Reconstruction: Digital-Discrete Methods offers scientists and
engineers who deal with digital data a highly accessible,
practical, and mathematically sound introduction to the powerful
theories of digital topology and functional analysis, while
avoiding the more abstruse aspects of these topics.
Gulf stability is coming to play a larger role in the foreign
policy calculus of many states, but the evolving role of Asian
powers is largely under-represented in the International Relations
literature. This volume addresses this gap with a set of
empirically rich, theory driven case studies written by academics
from or based in the countries in question. The underlying
assumption is not that Asian powers have already become important
security actors in the Gulf, but rather that they perceive the Gulf
as a region of increasing strategic relevance. How will leaders in
these countries adjust to an evolving regional framework? Will
there be coordinated efforts to establish an Asian-centered
approach to Gulf stability, or will Asian rivalries make the region
a theater of competition? Will US-China tensions force alignment
choices among Asian powers? Will Asian states balance, bandwagon,
hedge, or adopt some other approach to their Gulf relationships?
These questions become even more important as the western
boundaries of Asia increasingly come to incorporate the Middle
East. The book will appeal to scholars and students in the fields
of International Relations, Security Studies, and International
Political Economy, as well as area specialists on the Gulf and
those working on foreign policy issues on each of the Asian
countries included. Professionals in government and non-government
agencies will also find it very useful. The Open Access version of
this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made

This book brings together articles from leading experts in the
field of international dispute resolution. The main focus is on the
situation in Asia, though the European perspective also plays an
important part. Accordingly, the focus on the Asian dispute
resolution market with a distinctly American and European "touch"
is one of the book's most unique features. The dispute resolution
market is rapidly transforming, and dispute resolution law is
changing with it -especially in Asia. This book highlights recent
advances and outlines future trends in this area. Emphasis is
especially placed on International Commercial Arbitration Law on
the one hand; and on International Investment Arbitration Law on
the other. Two dedicated sections address these two topics, while
another is dedicated to a quite new phenomenon in the field of
international dispute resolution, the emergence of International
Commercial Courts not only in Asia, but also in other regions of
the world (e.g. in the Netherlands). This raises a host of
interesting legal questions, which the book addresses. The book's
final section investigates general trends in dispute resolution
(e.g. the rising cost problem in arbitration in general).
Imaging of tissue blood flow (BF) distributions provides vital
information for the diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of various
vascular diseases. The innovative near-infrared speckle contrast
diffuse correlation tomography (scDCT) technique produces full 3D
BF distributions. Many advanced features are provided over
competing technologies including high sampling density, fast data
acquisition, noninvasiveness, noncontact, affordability,
portability, and translatability across varied subject sizes. The
basic principle, instrumentation, and data analysis algorithms are
presented in detail. The extensive applications are summarized such
as imaging of cerebral BF (CBF) in mice, rat, and piglet animals
with skull penetration into deep brain. Clinical human testing
results are described by recovery of BF distributions on preterm
infants (CBF) through incubator wall, and on sensitive burn tissues
and mastectomy skin flaps without direct device-tissue
interactions. Supporting activities outlined include integrated
capability for acquiring surface curvature information, rapid 2D
blood flow mapping, and optimizations via tissue-like phantoms and
computer simulations. These applications and activities both
highlight and guide the reader as to the expected abilities and
limitations of scDCT for adapting into their own
preclinical/clinical research, use in constrained environments
(i.e., neonatal intensive care unit bedside), and use on vulnerable
subjects and measurement sites.
This book systematically introduces readers to the theory of deep
learning and explores its practical applications based on the
MindSpore AI computing framework. Divided into 14 chapters, the
book covers deep learning, deep neural networks (DNNs),
convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recurrent neural networks
(RNNs), unsupervised learning, deep reinforcement learning,
automated machine learning, device-cloud collaboration, deep
learning visualization, and data preparation for deep learning. To
help clarify the complex topics discussed, this book includes
numerous examples and links to online resources.
Polarity phenomena are pervasively observed in natural languages.
Previous studies on Chinese polarity items are mainly in line with
the non-veridicality approach. This book, however, employs the
downward-entailing hypothesis as its analytical foundation, and
argues that downward entailment is the only licensor for different
kinds of Chinese polarity items, and non-veridicality is neither a
necessary nor sufficient condition and thus offers inferior
explanatory power compared with the former. To begin with, it lays
the groundwork for this research by presenting a brief introduction
to polarity phenomena and reviewing the existing relevant theories.
Then it addresses the status of the commonly used element dou in
Chinese. Specifically, it applies the tripartite structural frame
to the studies of dou, and examines the role of dou in licensing
the polarity items. Moreover, it investigates the properties and
behavior of dou with respect to modality. Based on the analysis
above, it observes that non-interrogative wh-indeterminates in
Chinese can be licensed in the restriction domain of a necessity
operator. Also, the non-uniformity of three Chinese polarity items,
i.e., shenme, na-CL, and renhe, is scrutinized within the
downward-entailing framework. This book will appeal to scholars,
teachers and students in the field of linguistics, especially in
the areas of formal semantics and generative grammar. Researchers
and engineers in cloud computing and big data who are seeking help
from linguistic contributions to meaning and logic will also
benefit from it.
This book introduces readers to a workload-aware methodology for
large-scale graph algorithm optimization in graph-computing
systems, and proposes several optimization techniques that can
enable these systems to handle advanced graph algorithms
efficiently. More concretely, it proposes a workload-aware cost
model to guide the development of high-performance algorithms. On
the basis of the cost model, the book subsequently presents a
system-level optimization resulting in a partition-aware
graph-computing engine, PAGE. In addition, it presents three
efficient and scalable advanced graph algorithms - the subgraph
enumeration, cohesive subgraph detection, and graph extraction
algorithms. This book offers a valuable reference guide for junior
researchers, covering the latest advances in large-scale graph
analysis; and for senior researchers, sharing state-of-the-art
solutions based on advanced graph algorithms. In addition, all
readers will find a workload-aware methodology for designing
efficient large-scale graph algorithms.
This volume, edited by Kim Golombisky, applies an intersectional
lens to advertising, focusing on gender, race, ethnicity,
sexuality, disability, age, class, and nationality. Intersectional
feminist perspectives on advertising are rare in the advertising
industry, even as it faces pressure to reform. This anthology
focuses on advertising messaging to follow up the professional
practices covered in Feminists, Feminisms, and Advertising, edited
by Kim Golombisky and Peggy Kreshel. In this new collection,
contributors write from a variety of perspectives, including Black,
African, lesbian, transnational, poststructuralist, material,
commodity, and environmental feminisms. The authors also discuss
the reproductive justice framework, feminist disability studies,
feminist ethnography, feminist discourse analysis, and feminist
visual rhetoric. Together, these scholars introduce big ideas for
feminist advertising studies. The first section, titled
"Historicize This!," includes work dealing with historicized
analyses of advertising, ranging from more than a century of
stereotypes about black women to early twentieth-century white
women purchasing automobiles, all contextualized with women's
complex relations with technologies from cars to Twitter. The
second section, "Advertising Body Politics," groups work on topics
related to body politics in advertising, including lesbians,
disabled women, aging women, and Chinese "promotion girls." The
third section, "Media Reps," revisits advertising representation in
novel ways from operational definitions of race and advertising
news about gay men to advertising twenty-first-century
masculinities in Ghana and the United States. The last section,
"Reproduction and Postfeminist Empowerment," ends the book with a
selection of case studies on the advertising industry's cooptation
and commodification of feminism, particularly in regressive
postfeminist ideologies about women's reproductive health and
mothering.
Corruption and Anti-Corruption in Modern China collects essays from
the scholars in their fields and examines the ongoing corruption in
China by addressing this important topic from a historical
perspective through a cooperative interdisciplinary research effort
among Chinese-American scholars interested in the subject. Their
scholarship makes a significant contribution through multi-faceted
components from different fields such as history, economics,
political science, criminal justice, and popular culture. The
authors introduce and explore the theory and practice of policy
patterns, political systems, and social institutions by identifying
key issues in Chinese government and society contained within the
larger framework of the international sphere. This book describes a
historical transition when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)
maintained its forceful control of cities while the middle class
reluctantly sacrificed its rights in exchange for retaining their
economic benefits. To survive market economy, the party leadership
became more flexible and was able to adapt to economic and social
change. The CCP governments in our research responded to the rising
demands and expectations of the society. They were willing and able
to cope with the middle class by making a few compromises and
following certain legal procedures in exchange for continuing
political support. These practical comprises characterized a new
political culture in PRC history since 1949. The book voices the
complaints and resentments in the cities, and interprets government
policies and legal practices. It emphasizes the consequence for
governance, human rights, and commercial rule of law, all of which
threatens the legitimacy of the CCP. It also suggests an important
evolution of the CCP. The reform movement since the 1980s has not
yet contributed significantly to the country's democratic
transformation or to its social stability. The leaders in the 1990s
focused on liberal economic reform while discouraging and even
stifling political reform. As a result, economic interest groups
successfully established an alliance with CCP officials to control
economic policy-making and to share political governance. In the
2010s, Chinese leaders have paid special attention to political
scandals, corruption, and mismanagement in the government and in
the Party.

The Gulf monarchies have been generally perceived as status quo
actors reliant on the USA for their security, but in response to
regional events, particularly the Arab Spring of 2011, they are
pursuing more activist foreign policies, which has allowed other
international powers to play a larger role in regional affairs.
This book analyses the changing dynamic in this region, with expert
contributors providing original empirical case studies that examine
the relations between the Gulf monarchies and extra-regional
powers, including the USA, Russia, China, India, Brazil, Turkey,
Japan, South Korea, France, and the United Kingdom. At the
theoretical level, these case studies explore the extent to which
different international relations and international political
economy theories explain change in these relationships as the
regional, political and security environment shifts. Focusing on
how and why external powers approach their relationships with the
Gulf monarchies, contributors ask what motivates external powers to
pursue deeper involvement in an unstable region that has seen three
major conflicts in the past 40 years. Addressing an under-analysed,
yet important topic, the volume will appeal to scholars in the
fields of international relations and international political
economy as well as area specialists on the Gulf and those working
on the foreign policy issues of the extra-regional powers studied.
Among the most productive ecosystems on earth, wetlands are also
some of the most vulnerable. Australian Wetland Cultures argues for
the cultural value of wetlands. Through a focus on swamps and their
conservation, the volume makes a unique contribution to the growing
interdisciplinary field of the environmental humanities. The
authors investigate the crucial role of swamps in Australian
society through the idea of wetland cultures. The broad historical
and cultural range of the book spans pre-settlement indigenous
Australian cultures, nineteenth-century European colonization, and
contemporary Australian engagements with wetland habitats. The
contributors situate the Australian emphasis in international
cultural and ecological contexts. Case studies from Perth, Western
Australia, provide practical examples of the conservation of
wetlands as sites of interlinked natural and cultural heritage. The
volume will appeal to readers with interests in anthropology,
Australian studies, cultural studies, ecological science,
environmental studies, and heritage protection.
