Inspired by the legendary cyclists of the Tour de France, Yellow Jersey is a short wind sprint for two saxophones, originally composed for two clarinets. The form of the piece follows how the sprint would go as the cyclists move through the different stages of the race.
for soprano and piano
for soprano and piano Larsen's song cycle is based on the novel by the American writer, Willa Cather, and the songs recount Jim Burden's memories of Antonia Shimerda during their shared experiences of the pioneering period of European settlement on the tall-grass prairie of the American Midwest.
for SATB and french horn Larsen takes three nursery rhymes, familiar to every adult from their childhood, and uses the vocal lines and horn to personify the characters in each rhyme. In the first nursery rhyme, 'There was a little girl, ' the horrid little girl cavorts through the piece spouting blatant parallel fifths and brassy nonsense syllables and the setting of the last rhyme 'Try, try again' embodies success amidst many failed attempts
Holy Roller is a revival sermon captured in the sounds of the alto saxophone and piano. It is inspired by classical revival preaching and the music seeks to represent the language: cajoling and incanting, with the intention of magnetizing and mesmerizing the listener through the usage of what Larsen describes as "musical masterpieces of rhythm, tempo and extraordinary tension and release." A version for alto saxophone and concert band is available on hire.
Five songs for SATB chorus and piano on texts by twentieth-century women poets. Each has a unique perspective on love, ranging from reflections on loss, to the delights of everyday familiarity, and the thrill of spring and new passions.
for SATB, solo soprano, brass quintet, piano, and percussion A brilliant choral celebration of seven American legends (Phillis Wheatley, George Washington, Jenny Lind, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Clyde William Thornbaugh, Charles Lindbergh, Louis Armstrong). Energetic and appealing, the music culminates in a wordless finale which celebrates Louis Armstrong and the jazz clubs of the 1930s by mixing up six familiar classics.
Suitable for unaccompanied trumpet in C. Here, the music is composed to create layers of tonality which overlap in space, especially in a vast space with a long acoustic decay.
for flute, clarinet, and piano Barn Dances is a set of four abstract pieces drawing their titles from the name of a particular dance step used in cowboy dances. Taking the name of the step as a point of departure, Larsen's idea was to take a flight of fancy in each movement and to create the musical equivalent of a character drawing. Thus this lively set encompasses various styles including hoedown jig, swing, and a waltz. Suitable for concert use by conservatory students and accomplished school musicians.
Set for SSAA unaccompanied, this piece is Larsen's take on the famous witches' incantation, 'Double, double, toil and trouble, ' from Shakespeare's Macbeth. It features lurid word-painting and rhythmic tricks
for SATB choir and organ I will sing and raise a psalm has a text from St Francis of Assisi and works well as a concert piece or as an anthem. The music is rewarding for organist and choir alike. The conclusion, with its evocative radiance, is especially attractive.
for two clarinets Composed during the year between Lance Armstrong's fifth and sixth victories in the Tour de France, Yellow Jersey is a short wind sprint for two clarinets. The form of the piece follows how the sprint would go as the bicyclist moves through the stages of the race.
The texts are selected from the letters of Calamity Jane to her daughter Janey, from 1880-1902. The five songs present a stirring picture of an independent woman's struggle to earn a living to support her child.
for SATB and piano This short, light-hearted setting of a Julie Kane text is suitable for school or youth choirs, its homophonic texture and fun words making it easy to learn.
for mezzo-soprano and piano This song cycle uses texts by women poets and focuses on women's experience with great humour and irony. The cycle will appeal to singers with real interpretative flair and is accessible to advanced students.
Larsen's beautiful piece is absolute music in a standard classical layout with an emphasis on long lyrical lines. It is useful for conservatory and university students.
This excellent addition to the tuba repertoire allows this oft-neglected instrument to demonstrate its more versatile side. Concert Piece explores a 3-octave range, allowing the tuba to combine fast-paced passages (even including fierce glissandi) with lyrical contemplative melodies before returning to the exuberant tone of the opening.
Suitable for symphonic winds, tuned water glasses, and amplified voice, this piece consists of nine fully notated sections which surround eight sections of improvised music. Each of the improvised sections includes the reading of a poem which refers to the moon.
for SATB unaccompanied Three songs make up this cycle entitled Western Songs - 'Buffalo Gals', 'Green Grow the Lilacs', and 'Ol' Chisholm Trail'. The arrangements by turn spin contrapuntal and antiphonal textures then relax into meltingly beautiful chords, while glissandi and yipping vocal slides evoke the sounds of the barn dance and the cattle drive.
