Computer-animated comedy adventure. Lucas Nickle (voice of Zach Tyler Eisen) is a ten-year-old boy whose family has just moved to a new town, and Lucas isn't enjoying it much. He hasn't made any friends yet, his big sister ignores him, his parents (Larry Miller and Cheri Oteri) are occupied with their upcoming vacation in Mexico, and his loving but slightly crazy grandmother (Lily Tomlin) is convinced space aliens are casing out the neighbourhood. To make matters worse, the local bully has found Lucas and is making his life miserable, so the boy looks for someone he can push around - and he soon finds a large colony of ants in his yard. Lucas takes out his frustrations by stomping, drowning, and burying the bugs, not realising that the ants see him as a threat to their safety and aren't about take his attacks lying down. Zoc (Nicolas Cage) is a 'wizard ant' who creates a formula that shrinks Lucas to the size of an insect, and the tiny boy is brought before the leader of the Ant Council (Ricardo Montalban) and the Queen of the Colony (Meryl Streep) to answer for his crimes against the ants. Showing compassion, the queen sentences Lucas not to death, but to live among them and see how difficult their circumstances can be.
Well-received drama based on the childhood memories of director Franco Zeffirelli. It is Florence, 1934. A diverse group of women meet each afternoon for tea. There is Lady Hester Ransom (Maggie Smith), widow of the British Ambassador to Italy; Arabella (Judi Dench), a singer and artist; Georgie (Lily Tomlin), an eccentric American archaeologist; Elsa (Cher), also an American, and brash and reckless with it; and finally Mary (Joan Plowright), who has virtually adopted a young Italian boy named Luca. As the political climate shifts towards fascism, the ladies must face some inevitable changes, and Luca must face his own responsibilities.
Tina Fey and Paul Rudd star in this romantic comedy centred on the unexpected life changes that befall a priggish university admissions officer. Portia (Fey) maintains an outward veneer of calm and efficiency in the exalted position she holds, selecting the chosen few deemed suitable for Princeton University. But when she agrees to meet former college classmate John (Rudd) at his alternative-run school out in the sticks, her carefully constructed life begins to unravel. John believes that one of the gifted students that he's championing for Princeton, Jeremiah (Nat Wolff), is actually the child that Portia had adopted back in her college days. As Portia struggles with the ethics of helping to further Jeremiah's academic progress, a growing romance with John soon threatens to throw a spanner in the works of her hitherto orderly life.
Lily Tomlin narrates this award winning documentary that historically examines the way homosexuality has been dealt with over the years by mainstream Hollywood. Using film clips and interviews, the film illustrates tinseltown's negative portrayal of gay stereotypes over the years, but also highlights how, over time, gay characters on screen have not only increased, but have come to be more representative of the gay community at large.
Two classic 1980s comedies that share the theme of women fighting for respect in the workplace.
Working Girl (1988)
9 To 5 (1980)
Two sets of identical twin girls are accidentally mixed up at birth and switched - one 'pair' go to a rich family, the other to poor farmers. Years later, the poor twins head to New York for a showdown with a corporation which plans to wipe out their home town, only to find it headed by their real twin sisters. Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin play two twins each in this zany comedy.
