Victorian Publishing and Mrs. Gaskell's Work (Hardcover): Linda K. Hughes Victorian Publishing and Mrs. Gaskell's Work (Hardcover)
Linda K. Hughes
R2,111 Discovery Miles 21 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For much of her own century, Elizabeth Gaskell was recognized as a voice of Victorian convention&emdash;-the loyal wife, good mother, and respected writer&emdash;-a reputation that led to her steady decline in the view of twentieth-century literary critics. Recent scholars, however, have begun to recognize that Mrs. Gaskell's high standing in Victorian society allowed her to effect change in conventional ideology. Linda K. Hughes and Michael Lund focus this reevaluation on issues pertaining to the Victorian literary marketplace.

Victorian Publishing and Mrs. Gaskell's Work portrays an elusive and self-aware writer whose refusal to grant authority to a single perspective even while she recirculated the fundamental assumptions and debates of her era enabled her simultaneously to fulfill and deflect the expectations of the literary marketplace. While she wrote for money, producing periodical fiction, major novels, and nonfiction, Mrs. Gaskell was able to maintain a tone of warmth and empathy that allowed her to imagine multiple social and epistemological alternatives. Writing from within the established rubrics of gender, narrative, and publication format, she nevertheless performed important cultural work.

The Victorian Serial (Hardcover): Linda K. Hughes The Victorian Serial (Hardcover)
Linda K. Hughes
R2,132 Discovery Miles 21 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Linda K.Hughes and Michael Lund offer a new approach to the study of installment literature by showing how it embodied a view of life intrinsic to Victorian culture. They examine how the serial format (a continuing story over an extended time with enforced interruptions) affected the ways Victorian audiences interpreted 16 major works of poetry and fiction. Their findings, based on actual accounts of Victorian readers, show that Victorian interpretations were different from those of 20th-century single-volume readings. These differences suggest that for the Victorians the publishing format became an essential factor in creating meaning and that effects of this publishing format have been neglected in the 20th-century.

The Cambridge Companion to Victorian Women's Poetry (Hardcover): Linda K. Hughes The Cambridge Companion to Victorian Women's Poetry (Hardcover)
Linda K. Hughes
R2,163 Discovery Miles 21 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Victorian period has a strong tradition of poetry written by women. In this Companion, leading scholars deliver accessible and cutting-edge essays that situate Victorian women's poetry in its relation to print culture, diverse identities, and aesthetic and cultural issues. The book is inclusive in method, demonstrating, for example, the benefits of both distant and close reading approaches, and featuring major figures like Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti and over one hundred poets altogether. Thematically arranged, the chapters deliver studies on a comprehensive array of subjects that address women's poetry in its manifold forms and investigate its global context. Essays shed light on children's poetry, domestic relations, sexualities, and stylistic artifice and conclude by looking at how women poets placed their published poems and how we can 'place' Victorian women poets today.

The Cambridge Introduction to Victorian Poetry (Hardcover, New title): Linda K. Hughes The Cambridge Introduction to Victorian Poetry (Hardcover, New title)
Linda K. Hughes
R2,438 Discovery Miles 24 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Victorian poetry was read and enjoyed by a much larger audience than is sometimes thought. Publication in widely-circulating periodicals, reprinting in book reviews, and excerpting in novels and essays ensured that major poets such as Tennyson, Browning, Hardy and Rossetti were household names, and they remain popular today. The Cambridge Introduction to Victorian Poetry provides an accessible overview of British poetry from 1830 to 1901, paying particular attention to its role in mass media print culture. Designed to interest both students and scholars, the book traces lively dialogues between poets and explains poets' choices of form, style and language. It also demonstrates poetry's relevance to Victorian debates on science, social justice, religion, imperialism, and art. Featuring a glossary of literary terms, a guide to further reading, and two examples of close readings of Victorian poems, this introduction is the ideal starting-point for the study of verse in the nineteenth century.

Manyfaced Glass - Tennyson'S Dramatic Monologues (Hardcover): Linda K. Hughes Manyfaced Glass - Tennyson'S Dramatic Monologues (Hardcover)
Linda K. Hughes
R865 Discovery Miles 8 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The hazy settings and amorphous auditors of Tennyson's dramatic monologues are often contrasted-at Tennyson's expense-with Browning's more vivid, concrete realizations. Hughes argues that Tennyson's achievements in the genre are, in fact, considerable, that his influence can be traced in such major figures as T. S. Eliot, and that the monologue occupies a far more central position in Tennyson's poetic achievement than has hitherto been acknowledged. Hughes' study challenges the traditional view of Tennyson's inferior achievement, and her account of the elements and operation of the dramatic monologue, especially as demonstrated by three of its most important practitioners, will be of interest to all those concerned with the monologue as a poetic mode.

Late nineteenth-century Britain experienced an unprecedented explosion of visual print culture and a simultaneous rise in literacy across social classes. New printing technologies facilitated quick and cheap dissemination of images—illustrated books, periodicals, cartoons, comics, and ephemera—to a mass readership. This Victorian visual turn prefigured the present-day impact of the Internet on how images are produced and shared, both driving and reflecting the visual culture of its time. From this starting point, Drawing on the Victorians sets out to explore the relationship between Victorian graphic texts and today’s steampunk, manga, and other neo-Victorian genres that emulate and reinterpret their predecessors. Neo-Victorianism is a flourishing worldwide phenomenon, but one whose relationship with the texts from which it takes its inspiration remains underexplored. In this collection, scholars from literary studies, cultural studies, and art history consider contemporary works—Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Moto Naoko’s Lady Victorian, and Edward Gorey’s Gashlycrumb Tinies, among others—alongside their antecedents, from Punch’s 1897 Jubilee issue to Alice in Wonderland and more. They build on previous work on neo-Victorianism to affirm that the past not only influences but converses with the present. Contributors: Christine Ferguson, Kate Flint, Anna Maria Jones, Linda K. Hughes, Heidi Kaufman, Brian Maidment, Rebecca N. Mitchell, Jennifer Phegley, Monika Pietrzak-Franger, Peter W. Sinnema, Jessica Straley
