Based on more than 10 years of teaching experience, Blanken and his coeditors have assembled all the topics that should be covered in advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on multimedia retrieval and multimedia databases. The single chapters of this textbook explain the general architecture of multimedia information retrieval systems and cover various metadata languages such as Dublin Core, RDF, or MPEG. The authors emphasize high-level features and show how these are used in mathematical models to support the retrieval process. For each chapter, there 's detail on further reading, and additional exercises and teaching material is available online.
The industrialization of information resources has been a growing trend across the world in recent years, especially in China, where the information resource industry has expanded exponentially for more than a decade. While analyzing the development conditions of China's information resource industry, this book clearly defines the implications and strategic value of the industry, summarizes basic information resource industry theories, and clarifies the history of its development and special regional characteristics within the Chinese context. Drawing on the statistics and measurement of various economic indicators of the information resource industry, the authors propose four stages of development: a germination period, an initial development period, a subsequent rapid development period, and lastly, a steady development period. At the same time, the book draws upon various theoretical models such as the "Dynamic Resource Triangle" model, the "Information Resource Industrial Symbiosis" model, the value chain model, and the explanation model of information consumption in order to shed light on the information resource industry's elements and the optimization of its management. In addition, the authors present the Information Resource Industry Development Index (IRIDI) to evaluate the industry's development in different provinces and cities across mainland China and monitor its dynamics from the point of view of industrial value and the external environment. While the book lays a solid theoretical foundation for the growth of China's information resource industry, it will also give international readers a clear picture of China's emerging industries in the current era.
As an emerging strategic industry in China, the information resource industry (IRI) has had and will continue to have a growing impact on economic and social development. Focusing on the special characteristics of IRI policies in China, this book provides an in-depth discussion of the major directions, methods, and paths of development for IRI policies via a comprehensive analysis of the structural, organizational, promotional policies and policy instruments of China's IRI. Concentrating on policy instruments, this book, for the first time, provides a systematic, well-rounded review of China's IRI policies that have been released to date, and proposes a "China Information Resource Industry Policy Library" comprising six types of IRI policy documents: organizational, information, regulatory, incentives, market, and social. This book constitutes the proceedings of the joint International Conference APWeb/WAIM 2009 which was held in Suzhou, China, during April 1-4, 2009. The 42 full papers presented together with 26 short papers and the abstracts of 2 keynote speeches were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The topics covered are query processing, topic-based techniques, Web data processing, multidimensional data analysis, stream data processing, data mining and its applications, and data management support to advanced applications.

WAIM 2004, Dalian (China), 15-17 July, was hosted by Northeastern Univ- sity, China and Dalian University of Technology, China in cooperation with the Database Society of CCF. It was the International Conference on Web-Age Information Management. WAIM 2004 brought together participants from u- versities, industry, and governmentto present, discuss, and address both current issues and novel approaches in the practice, deployment, theory, and meth- ology of information management in the context of the World Wide Web. The conference provided an international forum for the sharing of original research results and practical development experiences among researchers and appli- tion developers from the many Web-related areas. The previous WAIM conf- ences wereheld in Shanghai(WAIM 2000), Xi'an (WAIM 2001), Beijing (WAIM 2002), and Chengdu, China (WAIM 2003). These conferences turned out to be very successful and each attracted more than 100 participants from all over the world. The WAIM 2004 conference included technical sessions organized around important subtopics such as data streamprocessing, time series data processing, mobilecomputing, cachemanagement, security, XML, Web services, Web search engines, query evaluation, and data mining, etc. Following careful review of the 291 submissionsby membersof the internationalprogramcommittee, 57 regular papers and 23 short/industrial papers were accepted for presentation at the conference and for publication in this volume. The submissions came from a total of 22 countries and regions, and the accepted ones were from 13 countries andregions, including Australia, Canada, Chile, China, HongKongSAR, Korea, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, UAE, UK, and USA.
