This book introduces Chinese educational reforms and developments
rolled out in the year 2014, examining them from both macro and
micro perspectives and pursuing a mixed-methods approach. This book
depicts the current landscape of the Chinese education system and
institutions on different educational levels and in a variety of
educational types, covering the development and reform status,
issues, causes and effects, strategy plans and trends in the
specific areas of schooling, financing, educator development and
student development. Based on policy analysis, case studies,
surveys and big data analysis, it combines the perspectives of both
officials and grass-root stakeholders. Presenting contributions by
scholars from over 10 Chinese and international higher education
institutions and research institutes, as well as administrators and
educators from over 20 provinces and regions throughout the nation,
the book offers the most comprehensive, up-to-date and solidly
fact-based scholarly representation of Chinese education reform and
development on the market.
This book reviews the latest advances in the bioelectrochemical
degradation of recalcitrant environmental contaminants. The first
part introduces readers to the basic principles and methodologies
of bioelectrochemical systems, electron-respiring microorganisms,
the electron transfer mechanism and functional electrode materials.
In turn, the second part addresses the bioelectrochemical
remediation/treatment of various environmental pollutants
(including highly toxic refractory organics, heavy metals, and
nitrates) in wastewater, sediment and wetlands. Reactor
configuration optimization, hybrid technology amplification and
enhanced removal principles and techniques are also discussed. The
book offers a valuable resource for all researchers and
professionals working in environmental science and engineering,
bioelectrochemistry, environmental microbiology and biotechnology.
In this book, the authors pursue quantitative, qualitative and
mixed methods approaches, conducting hundreds of large-scale
surveys and in-depth interviews in 679 schools, 67 counties and 13
provinces throughout China. They also conducted longitudinal case
studies in five municipalities and provinces to better reflect
education reform and development in different education levels or
sectors. The authors used national statistical data from the 1970s
to 2013, as well as a wealth of first-hand documents and data from
different levels of educational departments in schools, counties,
municipals and provinces and "grass-roots" input from 253 teachers,
principals, education administrators and students. The authors
applied SEM, HLM, GCM, and many other statistic techniques and
qualitative methods to analyse the data and materials in order to
explore correlations between development and reform, internal and
external factors in educational reforms, as well as strategies for
resolving core issues. Their findings indicate that institutional
reforms concerning financial investments, allocation of teaching
resources, allocation of facilities, curricula design systems, and
political, economic, social system reforms all contribute to the
development of different levels and types of education in different
modes and to different extents. Topics of particular interest
include five case studies conducted in five different
municipalities and provinces that showcase the nation's education
reform and development in a specific model and on the basis of
substantial data. Further, milestone events regarding educational
reform and development that have taken place in China since 2013
are examined. As a unique feature, the book also includes 353
diagrams and tables on the development and reform of education in
China, offering extensive and up-to-date information on a part of
the world that often remains difficult to access. The book provides
an expansive and in-depth examination of the nation's education
reform and development, from its historical roots to the present,
and combining official and "grass-roots" standpoints. It will help
readers to understand why and how Chinese education could lead
students to win in international comparisons like PISA while at the
same time often being the target of scathing criticism, as well as
how the nation is now working to provide a better education to
serve the world's largest population.
The book studies the educational needs of two disadvantaged groups
of children in China (left-behind children in rural areas and
migrant children in urban areas), aiming to optimize the social
support system so that these disadvantaged children can realize
their full potential. The author conducts two separate researches
and introduces the research background, methodology, related
theories and advanced theories. Main difficulties of left-behind
children and migrant children include parents’ lack of attention
to their children’s mental health, teachers’ lack of expertise
in working with these two groups of children, and a lack of
collaboration between schools and NGOs. It suggests promoting
systematic reform, helping parents to develop effective parenting
skills, and establishing positive interactions among the
stakeholders of social support for these disadvantaged children.
The book will be of interest to people who work with left-behind
children in rural areas and those who work with migrant students in
urban areas, including teachers, school administrators, local
educational authorities, community-based service providers, and
provincial and central departments of education.
This book provides detailed protocols for research in plant
photomorphogenesis. The collection includes a broad range of topics
including assays for shade avoidance responses, assays for
light-dependent protein-protein interactions, photobody detection
with immunofluorescence and the super-resolution imaging method,
protein complex isolation from plants, detection of homodimer and
monomer of photoreceptor UVR8 with immunoblotting analysis, assays
for seedling greening, procedures for studying skotomorphogenesis,
phenotypic study of photomorphogenesis at the seedling stage,
expression of Cryptochrome in insect cells, and more. Written for
the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters
include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the
necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily
reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and
avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Plant
Photomorphogenesis: Methods and Protocols serves as an ideal guide
for researchers and students who are new to the field, as well as a
stepping stone for experienced researchers to further their skills
in this fast-developing field.

Originally published in 1994 this book examines problems related to
investment planning, capacity additions, and choice of technology
in dynamic manufacturing systems characterized by multiple
products, dynamic demand growth, uncertainty in demand and
availability of alternative technologies. A model-based methodology
is developed that focuses on trade-offs between flexible and
conventional technology. The research conducted for this book is
directed to the development of tools to support investment
decisions in production capacity over medium and long-term planning
horizons.
Managing Supply Chain and Logistics: Competitive Strategy for a
Sustainable Future explores practical ways of investing in a
sustainable future through real-world cases which demonstrate
various supply chain management strategies and tactics. By applying
viable value creation strategies, operational models,
decision-making techniques, and information technology, the author
provides in-depth analyses of new initiatives such as collaborative
planning, forecasting, and replenishment (CPFR); demonstrates
competitive approaches to managing flows of material, information
and fund in supply chain; and illustrates creative methods to apply
data science and business intelligence. This book also promotes
cross-functional decision-making, problem solving skills and offers
a feasible approach to managing a volatile business. Readers will
find this book a valuable resource to solve supply chain management
practical problems with a sustainable future in mind.
Integrating theory and practices of supply chain management, this
book incorporates more than 15 years of supply chain and operations
management research and industry consulting experience to both
government and industry firms. The coverage focuses on how to build
a competitive supply chain using viable management strategies,
operational models, decision-making techniques, and information
technology. It includes a core presentation on supply chain
management and new initiatives such as e-commerce, collaborative
planning, forecasting, and replenishment (CPFR), data mining,
knowledge management, and business intelligence.

Traditional teacher education has ignored the realities of
teachers' lives both inside and outside the classroom, failing to
consider their existence within broader socio-cultural
circumstances. This study examines the professional development and
transformation of four women teachers including my mother and
myself in China and Canada through exploring our life experiences
in socio-cultural contexts. I use autobiographical writings,
material from in- depth interviews and artifacts, as well as
documents. Data analysis indicates that our devotion to teaching
career, optimistic attitude to life, success in overcoming many
difficulties to become teachers, all stem from our knowing of the
"Tao of life." My professional transformation in Canada led me to
understanding teacher as a curriculum maker, teacher development as
both personal growth and professional development, and professional
transformation as learning from relations. This study attempts to
provide a middle ground for dialogues among teachers and scholars
from different cultural backgrounds, enabling them to understand
each other and explore new versions of teacher education.
