In this book, the authors pursue quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approaches, conducting hundreds of large-scale surveys and in-depth interviews in 679 schools, 67 counties and 13 provinces throughout China. They also conducted longitudinal case studies in five municipalities and provinces to better reflect education reform and development in different education levels or sectors. The authors used national statistical data from the 1970s to 2013, as well as a wealth of first-hand documents and data from different levels of educational departments in schools, counties, municipals and provinces and "grass-roots" input from 253 teachers, principals, education administrators and students. The authors applied SEM, HLM, GCM, and many other statistic techniques and qualitative methods to analyse the data and materials in order to explore correlations between development and reform, internal and external factors in educational reforms, as well as strategies for resolving core issues. Their findings indicate that institutional reforms concerning financial investments, allocation of teaching resources, allocation of facilities, curricula design systems, and political, economic, social system reforms all contribute to the development of different levels and types of education in different modes and to different extents. Kindergarten teachers in Hong Kong have been criticized for not incorporating the child-centered approach into their practice. This failure is often justified by the pressure of external constraints such as the demands of the academic curriculum, parents' expectation of success and the emphasis on discipline within the Chinese culture. This book is to explore the extent to which such constraints were affected by the stage of a teacher's professional development. Nine case studies were carried out. The data suggested that the professional development of teachers was limited by their inability to extend their thinking beyond their own personal concerns so that the needs of the children were not the major determinant of their classroom practice. Instead, external constraints dominated the teachers' thinking. Ways of bringing about a transformation in teachers' thinking to improve the quality of the children's learning experience are considered. The analysis should help shed some light on schools' professional learning, and should be especially useful to those who may be considering interventions/school support initiatives to raise quality.

Traditional teacher education has ignored the realities of teachers' lives both inside and outside the classroom, failing to consider their existence within broader socio-cultural circumstances. This study examines the professional development and transformation of four women teachers including my mother and myself in China and Canada through exploring our life experiences in socio-cultural contexts. I use autobiographical writings, material from in- depth interviews and artifacts, as well as documents. Data analysis indicates that our devotion to teaching career, optimistic attitude to life, success in overcoming many difficulties to become teachers, all stem from our knowing of the "Tao of life." My professional transformation in Canada led me to understanding teacher as a curriculum maker, teacher development as both personal growth and professional development, and professional transformation as learning from relations. This study attempts to provide a middle ground for dialogues among teachers and scholars from different cultural backgrounds, enabling them to understand each other and explore new versions of teacher education.
