The exhibition Expressionism in Art and Film aims to shed new light
on Expressionism across traditional genre boundaries and to show
the mutual influences between the arts of painting, graphics and
film. In painted and moving images, the exhibition shows how deeply
Expressionism was permeated by the crises of its time and how it
loudly gave expression to the rapid social upheavals. Expressionism
as a cultural revolutionary movement endeavored from the beginning
to unite art and life, to abolish the separation of the arts and
thus multiple talents became the ideal of the artists and the total
work of art the desired goal. Text in English and German.
Helmut Sturm’s paintings radiate powerful colours and forms, yet
are simultaneously both lyrically tender and poetical. He developed
his individual pictorial language in a study of Cubism and Art
Informelas well as artists like Max Beckmann, Asger Jorn and Willem
de Kooning. The publication pays tribute to one of the most
important witnesses of abstract-expressive painting in Germany.
Helmut Sturm (1932–2008) was the initiator of the SPUR
artists’group (1957–1965) and was at one time closely
associated with the Situationist International movement. From 1985
he taught at theAcademy of Fine Arts in Munich as the successor to
Günter Fruhtrunk.Characteristic of his painting is the free
association of representational and abstractelements, the energy of
disorder and the delight in chance. This multi-faceted volume shows
Sturm’s impressive and diverse creative works from 1957–2007.
