American legal scholars have debated for some time the need for a
cultural defense in criminal proceedings where minority cultural
information seems perti nent to a finding of criminal
responsibility in situations where a minority cultural defendant
has violated a valid criminal statute. This work presents a
systematic analysis of this issue. Drawing from sociological,
anthropological, and philosophical materials, as well as
traditional legal discussions, the authors develop a scheme that
indicates when cultural factors can be used as the basis for such a
defense and when they are irrelevant to a finding of criminal
responsibility. The argument moves from general concerns of social
justice that apply under conditions of social and cultural
pluralism to practical policy recommendations for the operation of
American criminal justice. It thus connects more theoretical
materials with the practical concerns of jurisprudence. The
justification for legal recognition of a cultural defense in
American criminal law is anchored firmly in American constitutional
law.

In our highly interconnected and globalized world, people often
pursue their aspirations in multiple places. Yet in public and
scholarly debates, aspirations are often seen as the realm of
younger, mobile generations, since they are assumed to hold the
greatest potential for shaping the future. This volume flips this
perspective on its head by exploring how aspirations are
constructed from the vantage point of later life, and shows how
they are pursued across time, space, and generations. The
aspirations of older people are diverse, and relate not only to
aging itself but also to planning the next generation’s future,
preparing an "ideal" retirement, searching for intimacy and
self-realization, and confronting death and afterlives. Aspiring in
Later Life brings together rich ethnographic cases from different
regions of the world, offering original insights into how
aspirations shift over the course of life and how they are pursued
in contexts of translocal mobility. This book is also freely
available online as an open-access digital edition.
This book will help readers to better understand and address a
strange social phenomenon: the apparent choice by some seniors to
live in squalor. Seniors and Squalor examines the widespread and
growing phenomenon of mentally competent senior citizens living in
self-imposed squalor and refusing help, whether from health care
professionals, government, or family. At this juncture of medicine
and law, many families have experienced frustration, embarrassment,
and heartbreak. The book also explores associated ethical
questions, arguing that society can address the problem while
respecting individual legal autonomy. For the theorist, this work
provides the first in-depth treatment of legal and political theory
questions undergirding the issue of self-neglect by seniors. It
also underscores the importance of limited government, the
necessity of granting American citizens their individual rights,
and the critical need to stop classifying self-neglect as abuse.
This is an ideal read for graduate and undergraduate students,
scholars, practitioners of health care and geriatrics, social
workers, and lawyers. Most importantly, this book will appeal to
those directly affected by the problem-family, friends, and social
work professionals-by giving them a broader understanding of this
complex social issue and how to best respond to it. Incorporates
the latest research concerning laws and medical classifications
Offers the first in-depth treatment of legal and political theory
questions underlying the issue of self-neglect by senior citizens
Includes policy approaches crafted to address the issue at a
societal level Raises ethical questions based in the role of
government in solving social problems
The sexual politics of television culture is the territory covered
by this ground-breaking book - the first to demonstrate the ways in
which third wave feminist television studies approaches and
illuminates mainstream TV. Leading voices in third wave feminism
focus on innovative US television shows, including "The Sopranos",
"Oz", "Six Feet Under", "The L Word" and the reality-TV show "The
Bachelor" to take a closer look at the contradictions and
reciprocities between feminism and television, engaging as they go
in theoretical and critical conversations about media culture,
third wave feminism, feminist spectatorship, the sex wars, and the
politics of visual pleasure. The book offers an exuberant and
accessible discussion of what television has to offer today's
feminist fan. It also sets a new tone for future debate, turning
away from a sober, near-pessimistic trend in much feminist media
studies to reconnect with the roots of third wave feminism in riot
grrrl culture, sexradical feminism, and black feminism, tracing too
the narratives provided by queer theory in which pleasure has a
less contested place.
In the complex and multi-layered process of migration and
identity-building, classical migration theories and approaches of
transnationalism seem no longer able to grasp how belonging and
home are to be found in movement. This ethnography leads the reader
into the lives of five Jamaican women in Montreal; their daily
practices and experiences, their spaces of communion, their
memories and projections for the future. Lisa Johnson sheds light
on the mobile biographies and migratory agency of her interlocutors
by following the intricate mental and physical trajectories of
their deep-rooted yearning to return home.

Today's 18-to-40-year-olds make for a notoriously elusive group of
consumers: they're savvy, sophisticated, and particular. They're
all but immune to traditional advertising and have an instinctive
sense of quality and fair pricing. Inundated with choices, they are
drawn to brands that satisfy not just what they need, but what they
crave. At the same time, these consumers are spending money like
it's going out of style. Generation X has firmly refuted its
slacker reputation and is nearing the height of its earning
potential. Generation Y has more buying power than any previous
generation of teens and twentysomethings. But how to win their
attention and loyalty?
"In Mind Your X's and Y's," Lisa Johnson proves that the buying
habits of 18-to-40-year-olds can be anticipated. Johnson, coauthor
of "Don't Think Pink" and a leading marketing consultant, pinpoints
the new rules of engagement for this Connected Generation. Based on
her own and others' groundbreaking research, she looks into the
heart of the Gen X and Y psyche to identify its ten core cravings
-- for adventure, for high-concept design, for new families and
social networks, and for personal storytelling, to name a few.
This revolutionary book is packed with fascinating case studies
of established and breakaway brands from every major industry,
interviews with dozens of maverick thinkers and hundreds of
consumers, and numerous revealing statistics. Johnson analyzes the
scope of each craving to determine how it drives specific buying
behaviors and offers relevant data that illustrate its impact.
M"ind Your X's and Y's" equips anyone who wants to reach these
consumers -- brand managers and their advertising, online,
creative, packaging, events, and promotions teams; small-business
owners and their marketing staff; advertising agencies and
specialists -- with the know-how to transform market research into
profitable strategies.
Members of Generations X and Y are the most coveted and
hard-to-reach consumers in the marketplace. "Mind Your X's and Y's"
is a master class in how to create compelling brands for this
Connected Generation.
Teachers today are faced with a myriad of responsibilities from
student achievement to developing socially responsible citizens.
Schools of education work on promoting teacher knowledge and skill
however little has been done to advance the necessary dispositions
needed to meet the diverse needs of students. Perhaps this is
because few schools have been able to define what "disposition" is
much less promote and evaluate the impact of disposition on teacher
development or student learning. This study, conducted in
collaboration with world renowned scholar Dr. Alan J. Reiman,
examines professional judgment and action as key components of
teacher disposition. Specifically, it addresses how mentor
disposition impacts work with beginning teachers and how beginning
teacher disposition impacts work with students. The book is geared
toward teacher educators, those engaged in professional
development, and educational researchers interested in the area of
teacher disposition. It provides a concrete, measurable definition
of disposition including rubrics for evaluation and explores
professional development programs that can be replicated in various
environments.
This is the first book in a series that serves the dual purpose of preparing students of CLS programs for certification exams and giving cross training skills to established clinical lab scientists who now find themselves called on to work in other areas of the lab. This book uses a building block approach to convey the material in a logical fashion. Starting with an overview of medicine and the medical laboratorys relationship, the text proceeds to the diagnostic value of those analytes normally associated with clinical chemistry, on to technologies of analysis, quality assurance, and statistical analysis of laboratory data. A&L Outline Review of Clinical Chemistry makes it easy to optimize your study sessions and use your time efficiently, and helps you quickly locate key concepts. This PREP guide provides pretests to help you identify areas for extra attention, and gives you what you need to know in an easy-to-remember format, packed with study-enhancing devices such as illustrations and learning objectives.
An honest and compelling memoir, "Girl in Need of a Tourniquet" is
Merri Lisa Johnson's account of her borderline personality disorder
and how it has affected her life and relationships. Johnson
describes the feeling of "bleeding out" -- unable to tell where she
stopped and where her partner began. A self-confessed "psycho
girlfriend," she was influenced by many emotional factors from her
past. She recalls her path through a dysfunctional, destructive
relationship, while recounting the experiences that brought her to
her breaking point. In recognizing her struggle with borderline
personality disorder, Johnson is ultimately able to seek help,
embarking on a soul-searching healing process. It's a path that is
painful, difficult, and at times heart-wrenching, but ultimately
makes her more able to love and coexist in healthy relationships.
