Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made

York to move to New York City. There she meets the love of her
life. But Ricky Davis' job causes too much stress for her and she
leaves him without a word to return to her childhood home. Two
months later, she discovers she is pregnant with his child.
Stubborn and scared, she waits until she is eight months pregnant
before returning to NYC, hoping that Ricky will forgive her and let
her back into his life. But there is another woman, one he is
involved with who doesn't want to let go. And yet another woman
would like to be with him. Who will he choose? What does Amber have
to deal with to try to win back his love?

Robert Grosseteste (1168/75-1253), Bishop of Lincoln from
1235-1253, is widely recognized as one of the key intellectual
figures of medieval England and as a trailblazer in the history of
scientific methodology. Few of his numerous philosophical and
scientific writings circulated as widely as the Compotus, a
treatise on time reckoning and calendrical astronomy apparently
written during a period of study in Paris in the 1220s. Besides its
strong and long-lasting influence on later writers, Grossteste's
Compotus is particularly noteworthy for its innovatory approach to
the theory and practice of the ecclesiastical calendar-a subject of
essential importance to the life of the Latin Church. Confronting
traditional computistical doctrines with the lessons learned from
Graeco-Arabic astronomy, Grosseteste offered his readers a critical
and reform-oriented take on the discipline, in which he proposed a
specific version of the Islamic lunar as a substitute for the
failing nineteen-year cycle the Church still employed to calculate
the date of Easter. This new critical edition of Grosseteste's
Compotus contains the Latin text with an en-face English
translation. It is flanked by an extensive introduction and chapter
commentary, which will provide valuable new insights into the
text's purpose and disciplinary background, its date and
biographical context, its sources, as well as its reception in
later centuries.

My Big Wimmelbooks are hours of seek-and-find, hands-on learning
and fun for kids ages 2 to 5--and now, they're small enough to
carry around everywhere! With Cars and Things That Go, children
follow vehicles from trucks to buses to race cars (and more!) as
they zoom to all kinds of places. In these board books, every page
is bursting with life--and tons to discover! Wimmelbooks are
virtually instruction-free, inviting kids to make their own way
through the busy Wimmelworld they encounter, and to craft their own
stories. Children as young as age 2 have a blast pointing out
recognizable things--a blue tricycle, a hungry dog, a piggyback
ride--while older kids can follow the star characters from page to
page, telling their stories along the way. My Little
Wimmelbook--Cars and Things That Go invites young readers to travel
throughout Wimmeltown with characters who are on their way to work
and play via car, bus, truck, and more. It's the same engaging trip
through all kinds of vehicles, made just the right size for
portable fun. About Wimmelbooks Wimmelbooks originated in Germany
decades ago and have become a worldwide sensation with children
(and adults!) everywhere. My Big Wimmelbooks is the first-ever
Wimmelbook series to feature Wimmelbooks as Wimmelbooks in English.
They've been praised as "lively . . . and abounding with humor and
detail" (WSJ), likely to "make any parent's heart sing." (NYT)

I (Still) Believe explores the all-important question of whether
serious academic study of the Bible is threatening to one's faith.
Far from it-faith enhances study of the Bible and, reciprocally,
such study enriches a person's faith. With this in mind, this book
asks prominent Bible teachers and scholars to tell their story
reflecting on their own experiences at the intersection of faith
and serious academic study of the Bible. While the essays of this
book will provide some apology for academic study of the Bible as
an important discipline, the essays engage with this question in
ways that are uncontrived. They present real stories, with all the
complexities and struggles they may hold. To this end, the
contributors do two things: (a) reflect on their lives as someone
who teaches and researches the Bible, providing something of a
story outlining their journey of life and faith, and their
self-understanding as a biblical theologian; and (b) provide
focused reflections on how faith has made a difference, how it has
changed, and what challenges have arisen, remained, and are
unresolved, all with a view toward the future and engaging the
book's main question.
This book investigates how foreign subsidiaries of multinational
corporations expand their presence and functional scope into
foreign territories. It thereby focuses on how cross-border
subsidiary mandates are obtained and how they develop over time.
Multiple case-studies based on in-depth interviews with HQ and
subsidiary management suggest that subsidiary internationalization
represents a select MNC phenomenon and that associated foreign
market mandates are only of temporary nature. Foreign subsidiaries
appear to receive cross-border responsibility if their value
proposition for overcoming liability of inter-regional foreignness
is capable of more than offsetting any risk increase that stems
from principal-agent relationships between corporate headquarters
and foreign subsidiaries. Following the initial mandate gain, the
subsidiary s restrained access to HQ-like functions, intra-MNC
competition and altering localization degrees in the market covered
by the mandate puts the sustainability of cross-border
responsibilities at risk. As a consequence, internationalization
trajectories of foreign subsidiaries often follow discontinuous
rather than gradual evolutionary paths. In addition, cross-border
subsidiary mandates often appear to be predefined and temporary in
nature. They might actually have a limited life span from their
very conception.
Reflectance spectroscopy is the investigation of the spectral
composi tion of surface-reflected radiation with respect to its
angularly dependent intensity and the composition of the incident
primary radiation. Two limiting cases are important: The first
concerns regular (specular) reflection from a smooth surface, and
the second diffuse reflection from an ideal matte surface. All
possible variations are found in practice between these two
extremes. For the two extreme cases, two fundamentally different
methods of reflectance spectroscopy are employed: The first of
these consists in evaluating the optical constants n (refractive
index) and x (absorption index) from the measured regular
reflection by means of the Fresnel equations as a function of the
wave A. This rather old and very troublesome procedure, which is
length incapable of very accurate results, has recently been
modified by Fahren fort by replacing the air-sample phase boundary
by the phase boundary between a dielectric of higher refractive
index (n ) and the sample (n ). 1 2 If the sample absorbs no
radiation and the angle of incidence exceeds a certain definite
value, total reflection occurs. On close optical contact between
the two phases, a small amount of energy is transferred into the
less dense phase because of diffraction phenomena at the edges of
the incident beam. The energy flux in the two directions through
the phase boundary caused by this is equal, however, so that 'total
reflection takes place."
There is no question that the Torah is one of the most influential
documents in Western civilization. It is the source of widely known
characters like Joseph, Moses, and Noah, and timeless stories such
as the Garden of Eden and the Exodus. Jointly authored by
professors of Judaism and Christianity, The Torah: A Beginner's
Guide takes a unique approach, exploring the interplay and dynamics
of how these two religions share this common scripture. Drawing on
both scholarly and popular sources, Kaminsky and Lohr examine the
key debates, while simultaneously illustrating the importance of
the Torah in western jurisprudence, ethics, and contemporary
conceptions of the family, morality, and even politics.

"genius loci" mitbestimmt (Abb. 1). Abb.1. Ludwig Heilmeyer,

Fresnelschen Gleichungen in Ab- A. zu berechnen.
geschwacht.
Crime statistics are everywhere, but how do you know when they're
valid? If a newspaper report says "the rate of overall violent
crime decreased by 0.9 percent," how can you tell where that
statistic came from, what it measures, and how accurate it is? Is
it worth repeating or sharing? Measuring Crime: Behind the
Statistics gives you the tools to interpret and evaluate crime
statistics' quality and usefulness. The book focuses on ways of
thinking about crime statistics (no formulas!) and features Eight
questions you should ask before quoting a statistic The two sources
of information about homicide FBI statistics: what do they measure?
How victimization surveys can reflect your experiences even though
you were not asked to participate Special considerations when
interpreting statistics about sexual assault and fraud Examples of
experiments and studies on how to improve crime statistics Two
online supplements containing additional details and links to data
sources Whether you are a law enforcement professional, journalist,
student, or interested citizen, Measuring Crime: Behind the
Statistics will tell you how to read statistics as a statistician
would. Sharon Lohr, the author of Sampling: Design and Analysis,
has published widely about statistical methods for education,
public policy, law, and crime. She has been recognized as Fellow of
the American Statistical Association, elected member of the
International Statistical Institute, and recipient of the Gertrude
M. Cox Statistics Award and the Deming Lecturer Award. Formerly
Dean's Distinguished Professor of Statistics at Arizona State
University and a Vice President at Westat, she is now a freelance
statistical consultant and writer. Visit her website at
www.sharonlohr.com. "The book aims to achieve two goals: introduce
statistical ideas to a general audience and provide an overview of
US crime statistics. These are disparate topics, but in the way
they are approached here, there is a strong synergy that reinforces
both aspects. One the one hand, the reader's natural curiosity
about crime (what is it, how are crime events classified and
reported, how reliable are the numbers you see in the newspaper,
etc.) will help him/her become interested in the statistical issues
and learn these concepts in a practical and concrete setting. And
on the other hand, by reading about the statistical issues
surrounding crime data, he/she gains a better appreciation for the
complexities of crime statistics, eventually acquiring a deeper
understanding of them. As a statistician myself, I learned
interesting facts about the types of crime, their nomenclature and
the possible confusion surrounding them, and how the data are
collected and reported. Overall, I think the combination is
effective and very well developed in this book." (Jean Opsomer,
Westat) "This book is an excellent primer on handling the mass of
data and information researchers are faced with. While it is geared
toward followers of criminal justice information, much of the book
is a very good introduction to survey techniques discussing their
strong and weak points. Most importantly, there are very good
guidelines and questions that one should employ before citing any
data or using data for policy decisions or for reporting on data
such as journalists do. The book is written in a non-technical
manner and does a very good job of explaining the nuances in
reviewing data. Any researcher who utilizes data would find this
valuable. While it has specific examples in the criminal justice
field, it really is quite useful for any user of data." (Barry
Nussbaum, former President American Statistical Association)
