Similarity Solutions for the Boundary Layer Flow and Heat Transfer
of Viscous Fluids, Nanofluids, Porous Media, and Micropolar Fluids
presents new similarity solutions for fluid mechanics problems,
including heat transfer of viscous fluids, boundary layer flow,
flow in porous media, and nanofluids due to continuous moving
surfaces. After discussing several examples of these problems,
similarity solutions are derived and solved using the latest proven
methods, including bvp4c from MATLAB, the Keller-box method,
singularity methods, and more. Numerical solutions and asymptotic
results for limiting cases are also discussed in detail to
investigate how flow develops at the leading edge and its end
behavior. Detailed discussions of mathematical models for boundary
layer flow and heat transfer of micro-polar fluid and hybrid
nanofluid will help readers from a range of disciplinary
backgrounds in their research. Relevant background theory will also
be provided, thus helping readers solidify their computational work
with a better understanding of physical phenomena.
This book documents ongoing research and theorizing in the
sub-field of mathematics education devoted to the teaching and
learning of mathematical modelling and applications. Mathematical
modelling provides a way of conceiving and resolving problems in
people's everyday lives as well as sophisticated new problems for
society at large. Mathematical tradition in China that emphasizes
algorithm and computation has now seen a renaissance in
mathematical modelling and applications where China has made
significant progress with its economy, science and technology. In
recent decades, teaching and learning of mathematical modelling as
well as contests in mathematical modelling have been flourishing at
different levels of education in China. Today, teachers and
researchers in China become keener to learn from their colleagues
from Western countries and other parts of the world in research and
teaching of mathematical modelling and applications. The book
provides a dialogue and communication between colleagues from
across the globe with new impetus and resources for mathematical
modelling education and its research in both West and East with new
ideas on modelling teaching and practices, inside and outside
classrooms. All authors of this book are members of the
International Community of Teachers of Mathematical Modelling and
Applications (ICTMA), the peak research body into researching the
teaching, assessing and learning of mathematical modelling at all
levels of education from the early years to tertiary education as
well as in the workplace. The book is of interest to researchers,
mathematics educators, teacher educators, education administrators,
policy writers, curriculum developers, professional developers,
in-service teachers and pre-service teachers including those
interested in mathematical literacy.
This book gives a comprehensive overview of modern hydrogenation
methods used in organic synthesis. In clearly structured chapters,
the authors cover the catalysts, scope and limitations of their
application, and the techniques for hydrogenation of carbon-carbon,
carbon-heteroatom and heteroatom-heteroatom multiple bonds.
This book examines the socio-political conflicts which have arisen
since Hong Kong's return to China and confronts the fundamental
problems in the design of the One Country, Two Systems (OCTS)
Model. It considers not only the issue of democratization, but also
the institutional fractures in the executive-dominant political
system and the disconnection between the executive and the
legislature. It describes the drastic changes which have affected
social mobilization and political activism in Hong Kong, as well as
the pattern of interaction between the government and civil
society. This edited volume brings together a team of cutting-edge
researchers to examine the operation of the One Country, Two
Systems (OCTS) Model in Hong Kong over the past 20 years. The
discussion and analysis offered by the contributors will cast light
on social and political tensions and conflicts that will continue
to unfold in the coming years. This timely account, published on
the 20th anniversary of the handover, will be a valuable read for
students and scholars of Chinese and East Asian studies.
Social Policy and Change in East Asia is a collection of essays
from a group of indigenous East Asian social policy researchers who
met bi-annually to discuss social development issues. The book s
focus is the policy responses of respective East Asian government
since the 2008 financial tsunami struck the region. Together, the
essays in Social Policy and Change in East Asia argue that
traditional social policy approach has failed to account for the
problem of economic volatility and to devise policy measures that
can promote long-term stability. Avoiding a static and Eurocentric
approach, the authors of this book seek to unravel the meaning of
the social development approach in various policy contexts. This
book supports a dynamic understanding of social policy formulation
that does not neglect the problem of economic turbulence in policy
and planning.
While there are a number of books on the market that deal with
neuronal mechanisms and targets, the proposed book will be the only
one tocover the vascular aspects of CNS trauma. The contributing
authors will present basic mechanisms, explain cutting-edge
experimental models and techniques, and provide several clinical
chapters that provide treating physicians with some insight on the
cases that they see in the ICU. The table of contents is diverse
and comprehensive with chapters on molecular mechanisms,
physiology, pharmacology, stem cells, genomics and proteomics, in
vivo MRI and PET, as well as the clinical management of vascular
parameters. "
This volume discusses the determinants of happiness and presents
case studies of how public policy can help promote happiness.
Happiness is a private matter and individual pursuit, however
public policy does have an important role and can contribute much
through various enabling means. Possible examples of such influence
include establishing a set of institutions that allow private
enterprises to flourish, investing in infrastructure and in
education, protecting people from harm and reducing risks and
alleviating pain when harm is unavoidable. This book takes a
multidisciplinary approach that encompasses Economics, Psychology,
Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science and an international
perspective.
I ?rst heard of k.p in a course on semiconductor physics taught by
my thesis adviser William Paul at Harvard in the fall of 1956. He
presented the k.p Hamiltonian as a semiempirical theoretical tool
which had become rather useful for the interpre- tion of the
cyclotron resonance experiments, as reported by Dresselhaus, Kip
and Kittel. This perturbation technique had already been succinctly
discussed by Sho- ley in a now almost forgotten 1950 Physical
Review publication. In 1958 Harvey Brooks, who had returned to
Harvard as Dean of the Division of Engineering and Applied Physics
in which I was enrolled, gave a lecture on the capabilities of the
k.p technique to predict and 't non-parabolicities of band extrema
in semiconductors. He had just visited the General Electric Labs in
Schenectady and had discussed with Evan Kane the latter's recent
work on the non-parabolicity of band extrema in semiconductors, in
particular InSb. I was very impressed by Dean Brooks's talk as an
application of quantum mechanics to current real world problems.
During my thesis work I had performed a number of optical
measurements which were asking for theoretical interpretation,
among them the dependence of effective masses of semiconductors on
temperature and carrier concentration. Although my theoretical
ability was rather limited, with the help of Paul and Brooks I was
able to realize the capabilities of the k.p method for interpreting
my data in a simple way."
The Asian crisis of 1997-1998 was a major influence on
macroeconomic thinking concerning exchange rate regimes, the
functioning of international institutions, such as the IMF and the
World Bank, and international contagion of macroeconomic
instability from one country to another.
Exchange Rate Regimes and Macroeconomic Stability offers
perspectives on these issues from the viewpoints of two Nobel
Laureates, an IMF economist, and Asian economists. This book
contributes new ideas to the ongoing debate on the role of domestic
monetary authorities and international institutions in reducing the
likelihood of international financial crises, as well as the
problems associated with various exchange rate regimes from the
standpoint of macroeconomic stability.
Overall, the chapters contained in this volume offer interesting
perspectives, which have been stimulated by the recent events in
the foreign exchange market. They provide a useful reference for
anyone interested in the development of exchange rate regimes, and
represent considerable reflection by economists half a century
after Bretton Woods.
Intelligent building is the future of our building industry; all
commercial, residential, industrial and institutional buildings
will be designed towards the goal of intelligent buildings'. The
most important aspect of an intelligent building is the building
systems, such as electrical services, heating, ventilation and
air-conditioning systems, vertical transportation systems, and life
safety systems, which must operate intelligently and efficiently to
enhance the activities of the occupants. Intelligent Building
Systems explains what already exists in a modern intelligent
building and describes what is currently being developed by
researchers to improve human comfort, working efficiency and energy
performance for buildings in the 21st century. Intelligent Building
Systems is divided into three parts. The first part gives a quick
review of the structure, terminology, layout and operating
principles of most standard modern building systems. The second
part introduces the background material necessary to understand
intelligent building systems, including information on electronics
technology, fundamental mathematics, and techniques in artificial
intelligence and signal processing. These first two parts are the
foundation for the final part, which consists of research works
carried out by the authors and other researchers in the application
of artificial intelligence to building systems. The technologies
presented will encourage readers to envision new and innovative
ideas on possible future applications. Intelligent Building Systems
is relevant to practitioners and researchers in the area of
architectural science and engineering, electrical and mechanical
services and intelligent buildings. It may also be used as a text
for advanced courses on the topic.
This book is about the Himalayan ranges as a source of fresh water
supply and a perennial store house of ice, snow and permafrost as
well as a vast repository of rich biodiversity, in the light of
climate change. Special attention is given to the dynamics of snow
and glaciers in the northwestern Himalayas, assessment of climate
change patterns, and the consequences of changes and flow regime in
order to understand the behaviour of climate change in the
northwestern Himalayas. The outcome of melting glaciers are
pro-glacial lakes. Their increasing size and potential danger of
outbursts requires systematic study, particularly where there is
the risk of impact on life and property. Furthermore, the changing
trend of the hydrological cycle on a regional or local scale is
another area of research which calls for the attention of
geoscientists. To date there is a scarcity of reliable data meaning
that a concerted effort is still required by all parties.
The book explains how multi-generational Australian-born Chinese
(ABC) negotiate the balance of two cultures. Itexplores both
thephilosophical and theoretical levels, focusingon deconstructing
and re-evaluating the concept of 'Chineseness.' At a social and
experiential level, it concentrates on how successive generations
of early migrants experience, negotiate and express their Chinese
identity.
The diasporic literature has taken up the idea of hybrid identity
construction largely in relation to first- and second-generation
migrants and to the sojourner's sense of roots in a diasporic
setting somewhat lost in the debate over Chinese diasporas and
identities are the experiences of long-term migrant communities.
Their experiences are usually discussed in terms of the melting-pot
concepts of assimilation and integration that assume ethnic
identification decreases and eventually disappears over successive
generations. Based on ethnography, fieldwork and participant
observation on multi-generational Australian-born Chinese whose
families have resided in Australia from three to six generations,
this study reveals a contrasting picture of ethnic identification."
As a book on public policy, this book is unique in addressing
explicitly the role of human nature. Only with a good understanding
of human nature can policy makers address their foremost needs and
anticipate how people may respond to specific designs in policy.
This way policy makers can avoid "unintended consequences." The
book also provides a new perspective on the meaning of public
interest, which is based on intellectual roots dating back to
J.S.Mill and more recently Harsanyi and Rawls.
Traditionally, economists have referred to either the Hicksian
criterion or the Kaldorian criterion as the yardstick to whether a
policy is welfare enhancing, not realizing that both of these
criteria fail abjectly in producing a convincing test for welfare
improvement. This is because ex post, typically some people will
gain and some people will lose from any policy. The author argues
for an alternative, ex ante welfare increase criterion that is
based on how people would assess a policy if they were completely
impartial and totally ignored their personal interests. It applies
the principles to key policy concerns such as health policy, tort
law reform, education and cultural policy, and pension reform.
The healthcare reform proposals in the book illustrate the
application of the principles. The author proposes a basic
protection plan under which standard basic healthcare services are
priced the same whether they are provided by public or private
caregivers at levels that can contain both demand side and supply
side moral hazard. Annual eligible healthcare expenses are capped
to alleviate worries. A "Lifetime Healthcare Supplement" that
includes an element of risk sharing adds to patients choice and
protection without compromising fiscal sustainability.
Artificial Intelligence is at the top of the agenda for education
leaders, scientists, technologists and policy makers in educating
the next generation across the globe. Beyond applying AI in daily
life applications and educational tools, understanding how to learn
and teach AI is increasingly important. Despite these emerging
technology breakthroughs, AI learning is still new to educators
especially to K-16 teachers. There is a lack of evidence-based
studies that inform them about AI learning, including design
principles for building a set of curriculum content, and
pedagogical approaches as well as technological tools. Teaching AI
concepts and techniques from programming languages and
developmentally appropriate learning tools (e.g., robotics, serious
games, software, intelligent agents) across different education
levels emerged in recent years. The primary purpose of this book is
to respond to the need to conceptualize the emerging term "AI
literacy" and investigate how to teach and learn AI in K-16
education settings. This book examines different aspects of
learning artefacts, pedagogies, content knowledge and assessment
methods of AI literacy education, from theoretical discussions to
practical recommendations for curriculum and instructional design.
An exhaustive summary of current evidence with examples is
illustrated in this book, as well as cutting-edge research that
serves as an AI literacy model for different countries' contexts.
Part I, "Conceptualizing AI literacy", provides a detailed
discussion on the development of the concepts and frameworks on AI
literacy education, discusses the differences and similarities
between AI in education (AIED) and AI literacy education, and
illustrates the reasons why K-16 students need to learn AI. These
concepts are brought together in Part II, "K-16 AI literacy
education" to further summarize the pedagogies, learning content,
learning tools and assessment methods to inform K-16 educators how
to design their AI instruction at each education level. After that,
part III "AI literacy for instructional designers" explores how
instructional designers (i.e., AI developers and teachers) prepare
themselves to become ready to design developmentally appropriate
tools, platforms, services and curricula to empower students with
AI literacy skills.
This book presents important research findings and recent
innovations in the field of machine learning and signal processing.
A wide range of topics relating to machine learning and signal
processing techniques and their applications are addressed in order
to provide both researchers and practitioners with a valuable
resource documenting the latest advances and trends. The book
comprises a careful selection of the papers submitted to the 2015
International Conference on Machine Learning and Signal Processing
(MALSIP 2015), which was held on 15-17 December 2015 in Ho Chi Minh
City, Vietnam with the aim of offering researchers, academicians,
and practitioners an ideal opportunity to disseminate their
findings and achievements. All of the included contributions were
chosen by expert peer reviewers from across the world on the basis
of their interest to the community. In addition to presenting the
latest in design, development, and research, the book provides
access to numerous new algorithms for machine learning and signal
processing for engineering problems.
Principles of Public Policy Practice was written with policy
makers, concerned citizens, and students of public policy in mind.
Striving to avoid technical language, the author introduces a new
paradigm that starts from the commonality of human nature and the
assumption that public policy should be impartial. Rather than
playing the interests of one group versus those of another, he
argues convincingly that public policy should aim at enhancing the
ex ante welfare for everyone if everyone did not know the position
or the identity one would assume. Using this conceptual device of
the representative individual, the analysis readily leads to policy
implications that are both reasonable and concrete in diverse areas
ranging from health care, crime and punishment to macroeconomic and
financial market stability. The book concludes with a chapter
summarizing the various principles of public policy practice that
will meet the challenges of the new millennium. These principles,
certainly of interest to academics in social sciences who are
studying public policy, political economy, international financial
systems, and capital markets, should appeal equally to
practitioners, including public policy makers, consultants,
advisers, administrators, and public service trade unions.
This book explores the manifold ways that the current
confrontations between China and the US, and political tensions
within the Special Administrative Region (SAR) has brought Hong
Kong to the forefront of emerging political frictions between
Beijing and the territory and growing international rivalry between
the two powerful nations of the world. Unlike the situation in the
post-WWII decades, which witnessed the internationalisation of the
Hong Kong economy, this “New Cold War” poses challenges to the
SAR’s status as a global city and international financial and
business centre. The enactment of the National Security Law and the
growing presence of Beijing in regulating the SAR’s domestic
affairs triggered strong reactions from many countries. Hong Kong
has to bear some of the consequences of measures imposed onto China
as a result of current controversies. The shadow of China also
raises many eyebrows about the prospects of Hong Kong as a free and
liberal city. And the outbreak of COVID-19 and the concomitant
interruption to economic flows and the movement of people further
complicate the situation. This book will be of great value to
students and scholars in the fields such as Economics, Sociology
and Asia Pacific studies. The chapters in this book were originally
published in the Asia Pacific Business Review.
'Ranging from original photographs to pictures from university
archives, the insightful curation of images in this book further
enhances the reading experience ... An authoritative and
comprehensive synthesis of both primary and secondary sources,
Nobel and Lasker Laureates of Chinese Descent offers unparalleled
insight into the most eminent twentieth-century physicians and
scientists of Chinese descent. The book is of broad interest to
anyone interested in the history of science and medicine,
especially when there is a growing recognition of both the
importance of diversity in STEM and the impact of Chinese research
on the global scientific community.'Current Biology MagazineAt the
turn of the 20th century, the Boxer Uprising marked the culmination
of a violent and tragic chapter in Chinese history. Out of the
ashes of this calamity, scholarships funded by Boxer Indemnity and
many others fostered some of the greatest minds in the Chinese
modern era. This book celebrates notable luminary scholars of
Chinese descent, with a special focus on 1 Wolf Prize, 4 Lasker,
and 11 Nobel laureates spanning a wide range of disciplines in both
literature and science. We visit the struggles of pioneers
Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen-Ning Yang as the first Chinese Nobel prize
recipients for characterizing fundamental laws in
elementary-particle physics. Their pioneering works have paved the
way for many to follow. We chronicle the careers of more recent
recipients, including Mo Yan and his celebration of peasant life in
China through the lens of hallucinatory realism. We delve into the
lives of these Laureates, witness the obstacles that they overcame,
and testify to their lasting contributions to humankind. In
recounting the intellectual struggles and triumphs of these
pioneers of Chinese heritage, we hope to inspire the next
generation of scholars in literature and science worldwide in the
hope that they too might become laureates one day.
