How do people interact when they are on the move? How do people interact in order to be mobile? How do people coordinate the mobility of others? How does mobility feature in social interaction? This book offers a novel perspective on how people engage in sensing the materiality of the world as a way of social interaction. It proposes a conceptual and analytical advance in how to approach sensing as an intersubjective and interactional phenomenon within the framework of conversation analysis and ethnomethodology. Based on a uniquely rich set of video-recorded data, the author shows how people reacting to cheese in gourmet shops across Europe highlights the part the senses play in human behaviour and communication. The multimodal analysis of the case studies reveals the systematic features of looking, touching, smelling, and tasting in situated activities. By blending interdisciplinary research with real life, the volume puts together a theoretical and methodological framework for studying the embodied and linguistic dimensions of sensing in interaction.
Each time we take a turn in conversation we indicate what we know and what we think others know. However, knowledge is neither static nor absolute. It is shaped by those we interact with and governed by social norms - we monitor one another for whether we are fulfilling our rights and responsibilities with respect to knowledge, and for who has relatively more rights to assert knowledge over some state of affairs. The term a oeconversational analysisa denotes a relatively recent research field, which was originally developed by sociologists and was then taken up by linguists and made a decisive contribution to the development of conversational research in linguistics. The book is designed as an introduction to the field and is primarily intended for readers interested in applying conversational analysis to conversations in French.
