Back in the 1950s during the "Cold War" every new day beckoned the
possibility of the end of the world. Kids grew up in the shadow of
bomb shelters and were treated to daily lessons at school on what
to do in the event of a nuclear attack. Americans were besieged by
constant reminders to police our borders, to carefully watch out
for "foreigners" who might be spies, and to be ever vigilant in
preparing to combat the "red" menace of communism. Comic books of
this era played on these fears with stories of atomic war and world
war III. This new historic reprint looks back at those good ole
days, which can be viewed in the perspective of today's political
climate. This volume reprints the complete runs of Atomic War! and
World War III and can be read merely as great action/adventure
stories, classic "war" comics or as an eerie, unanticipated
commentary on today's tribulations. SPECIAL NOTE: if these
extremely rare books were purchased at your local comic shop they
would cost well over $1000 in low grade condition!
Dr. Henry Jekyll is a well-liked and respected physician. When he
calls upon his lawyer, Mr. Utterson, to draw up a new will to
include a strange new beneficiary, Mr. Utterson takes it upon
himself to investigate the identity of this strange man. But
nothing sufficiently prepares him for the truth he will uncover!
Classics Illustrated tells this wonderful tale in colourful comic
strip form, offering an excellent introduction for younger readers.
This edition also includes theme discussions and study questions,
which can be used both in the classroom or at home to further
engage the reader in the work at hand.

"Towards the end of the nineteenth century, several newspapers in
England carried a small account of the discovery of a mass of
flaming gas, chiefly hydrogen, originating on the planet Mars and
moving with enormous speed towards the Earth. The news item,
however, was so insignificant, that I, as well as the rest of the
world, ignored what proved to be one of the gravest dangers that
ever threatened the human race..." So begins this exciting version
of Wells's science fiction of the Martian invasion, told through
the eyes of an ordinary man. Classics Illustrated tells this
wonderful tale in colourful comic strip form, offering an excellent
introduction for younger readers. This edition also includes a
biography of H. G. Wells, theme discussions and study questions,
offering the reader the ability to further explore Wells's
terrifying tale. The Classics Illustrated comic book series began
in 1941 with its first issue, Alexandre Dumas's The Three
Musketeers, and has since included over 200 classic tales released
around the world. This new Vintage Replica hardback edition is part
of a continuing effort to make Classics Illustrated available to
all, be they young readers just beginning their journeys into the
great world of classic literature, or collectors who have fond
memories of this much loved comic book series.

The Time Traveller (for so it will be convenient to speak of him)
was expounding a recondite matter to us. His grey eyes shone and
twinkled, and his usually pale face was flushed and animated. The
fire burned brightly, and the soft radiance of the incandescent
lights in the lilies of silver caught the bubbles that flashed and
passed in our glasses.
