dialects in which they have been orally transmitted from generation
to generation by the unlettered folk, Garnett retained native terms
for the mythical personages who figure in them only when no
adequate English equivalent could be found. Contents: mother of the
sea, or story of Yianko; wild man; king of the birds; thrice noble,
of the three Citrons; Nereid; tower of the forty Dhrakos and the
king of the golden apple; Stringla princess; queen of the Gorgons;
