China's Next Act - How Sustainability and Technology are Reshaping China's Rise and the World's Future... China's Next Act - How Sustainability and Technology are Reshaping China's Rise and the World's Future (Hardcover)
Scott M. Moore
R782 Discovery Miles 7 820 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

From solar panels to synthetic biology, an accessible-yet-authoritative overview of how climate change, the global Covid-19 pandemic, and emerging technologies are changing China's relationship with the world, and what it means for governments, companies, and organizations across the globe. Ever since China began its ascendancy to great-power status in the 1980s, observers have focused on its growing economic, military, and diplomatic power. But in recent years, Chinese officials, businesses, and institutions have increased their visibility and influence on every major global issue, from climate change and artificial intelligence to biotechnology and the global Covid-19 pandemic. How have these newer issues changed China's relationship with the world? And, importantly, how can we prepare for a future increasingly shaped by China? In China's Next Act, Scott M. Moore re-envisions China's role in the world, with a focus on sustainability and technology. Moore argues that these increasingly pressing, shared global challenges are reshaping China's economy and foreign policy, and consequently, cannot be tackled without China. Yet sustainability and technology present opportunities for intensified economic, geopolitical, and ideological competition-a reality that Beijing recognizes. The US and other countries must do the same if they are to meet ecological and technological challenges in the decades ahead. In some areas, like clean technology development, competition can be good for the planet. But in others, it could be catastrophic-only cooperation can lower the risks of artificial intelligence and other disruptive new technologies. In this clearly written and accessible overview, Moore examines how countries like the US must balance cooperation and competition with China in response to shared challenges. With an emphasis on opportunities as well as threats, Moore addresses not only key developments in sustainability and technology within China, but also their implications for foreign countries, companies, and other organizations. China's influence on sustainability and technology is both global and granular-and twenty-first century China itself looks more like a network than a nation-state. Featuring original interviews and an in-depth look at Chinese government policy, China's Next Act provides a unique-and uniquely balanced-window into these new dimensions of China's global ascension.

Heart of Darkness (Paperback, New edition): Joseph Conrad Heart of Darkness (Paperback, New edition)
Joseph Conrad; Introduction by Gene M. Moore; Notes by Gene M. Moore; Series edited by Keith Carabine
R130 R95 Discovery Miles 950 Save R35 (27%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Introduction and Notes by Gene M. Moore, Universiteit van Amsterdam. Generally regarded as the pre-eminent work of Conrad's shorter fiction, Heart of Darkness is a chilling tale of horror which, as the author intended, is capable of many interpretations. Set in the Congo during the period of rapid colonial expansion in the 19th century, the story deals with the highly disturbing effects of economic, social and political exploitation of European and African societies and the cataclysmic behaviour this induced in some individuals. The other two stories in this book - Youth and The End of the Tether - concern the sea and those who sail upon it, a genre in which Conrad reigns supreme.

Gut Feeling and Digestive Health in Nineteenth-Century Literature, History and Culture (Paperback, 1st ed. 2018): Manon... Gut Feeling and Digestive Health in Nineteenth-Century Literature, History and Culture (Paperback, 1st ed. 2018)
Manon Mathias, Alison M. Moore
R3,720 Discovery Miles 37 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book considers the historical and cultural origins of the gut-brain relationship now evidenced in numerous scientific research fields. Bringing together eleven scholars with wide interdisciplinary expertise, the volume examines literal and metaphorical digestion in different spheres of nineteenth-century life. Digestive health is examined in three sections in relation to science, politics and literature during the period, focusing on Northern America, Europe and Australia. Using diverse methodologies, the essays demonstrate that the long nineteenth century was an important moment in the Western understanding and perception of the gastroenterological system and its relation to the mind in the sense of cognition, mental wellbeing, and the emotions. This collection explores how medical breakthroughs are often historically preceded by intuitive models imagined throughout a range of cultural productions.

Cow Boys and Cattle Men - Class and Masculinities on the Texas Frontier, 1865-1900 (Paperback): Jacqueline M. Moore Cow Boys and Cattle Men - Class and Masculinities on the Texas Frontier, 1865-1900 (Paperback)
Jacqueline M. Moore
R746 Discovery Miles 7 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cowboys are an American legend, but despite ubiquity in history and popular culture, misperceptions abound. Technically, a cowboy worked with cattle, as a ranch hand, while his boss, the cattleman, owned the ranch. Jacqueline M. Moore casts aside romantic and one-dimensional images of cowboys by analyzing the class, gender, and labor histories of ranching in Texas during the second half of the nineteenth century. As working-class men, cowboys showed their masculinity through their skills at work as well as public displays in town. But what cowboys thought was manly behavior did not always match those ideas of the business-minded cattlemen, who largely absorbed middle-class masculine ideals of restraint. Real men, by these standards, had self-mastery over their impulses and didn't fight, drink, gamble or consort with "unsavory" women. Moore explores how, in contrast to the mythic image, from the late 1870s on, as the Texas frontier became more settled and the open range disappeared, the real cowboys faced increasing demands from the people around them to rein in the very traits that Americans considered the most masculine. Published in Cooperation with the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies, Southern Methodist University.

Childhood and Sexuality - Contemporary Issues and Debates (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Allison M. Moore, P. Reynolds Childhood and Sexuality - Contemporary Issues and Debates (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Allison M. Moore, P. Reynolds
R4,188 Discovery Miles 41 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores how children engage with sex and sexuality. Building on a conceptual and legal grounding in sexuality studies and the new sociology of childhood, the authors debate the age of consent, teenage pregnany, sexual diversity, sexualisation, sex education and sexual literacy, paedophilia, and sex in the digital age. Whilst Moore and Reynolds recognise the necessity of child protection and safeguarding in the context of risk, danger and harm, they also argue that where these stifle children's sexual knowledge, understanding, expression and experience, they contribute to a climate of fear, ignorance and bad experiences or harms. What is necessary is to balance safeguarding with enabling, and encourage judicious understandings that advance from a rigid developmental model to one that recognises pleasure and excitement in children's nascent sexual lives. Exploring that balance through their chosen issues, they seek to encourage changed thinking in professional, personal and academic contexts, and speculate that children might teach adults something about the way they think about sex. Childhood and Sexuality will be of interest to students, scholars and professionals across a range of subjects and disciplines including sociology, social work, criminology, and youth studies.

Who Should Own Natural Resources? (Paperback): M Moore Who Should Own Natural Resources? (Paperback)
M Moore
R319 Discovery Miles 3 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The natural resources of the earth - from oil and water to minerals and land - are crucial to our basic economic and social existence. But who is entitled to control, use and benefit from them? Should anyone 'own' the natural bounty of our planet? In this book, distinguished political theorist Margaret Moore tackles these questions and examines the different positions in the debate. States claim the right to control the natural resources within their territory. Liberals argue for a system of private ownership rights, including over natural resources, while egalitarians dispute such claims and argue for equal rights to natural resources. Moore shows why these standard approaches to resource justice are wanting, and offers an original approach that examines the different ways in which people interact with resources in order to determine what good is at stake in any particular case. In the context of serious environmental crisis and looming resource conflicts, this innovative and timely book will be essential reading for all students and scholars interested in the environment, property, distributive justice, and future generations.

Michael D Waters, F. Bernhard Daniel, Joellen Lewtas, Martha M. Moore, Stephen Nesnow
R1,617 Discovery Miles 16 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Contained in this volume are the proceedings of the international conference on the "Genetic Toxicology of Complex Mixtures," held from July 4-7, 1989, in Washington, DC. This meeting was a satellite of the "Fifth International Conference on Environmental Mutagens" and the seventh in a biennial series of conferences on "Short-term Bioassays in the Analysis of Complex Environmental Mixtures. " Our central objective in calling together key researchers from around the world was to extend our knowledge of the application of the methods of genetic toxicology and analytical chemistry in the evaluation of chemical mixtures as they exist in the environment. This conference emphasized the study of genotoxicants in air and water, and the assessment of human exposure and cancer risk. The latest strategies and methodologies for biomonitoring of genotoxicants (including transformation products) were described in the context of the ambient environment. Source character ization and source apportionment were discussed as an aid to understand ing the origin and relative contribution of various kinds of complex mix tures to the ambient environment. Similarly, investigations of genotoxi cants found in the indoor environment (sidestream cigarette smoke) and in drinking water (chlorohydroxyfuranones) were given special attention in terms of their potential health impacts. New molecular techniques were described to enable more precise quantitation of internal dose and dose to-target tissues. The emphasis of presentations on exposures/effects assessment was on integrated quantitative evaluation of human exposure and potential health effects.

The Origins of Modern Spin - Democratic Government and the Media in Britain, 1945-51 (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): M Moore The Origins of Modern Spin - Democratic Government and the Media in Britain, 1945-51 (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)

R1,567 Discovery Miles 15 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Based on original research, this book disputes the notion that information management is a recent phenomenon. It traces its origins to the period 1945-1951, when the post-war Labour government, and its media architect, Herbert Morrison, moved from an idealistic commitment to open communication towards the pragmatic relationship with the media with which we are now familiar. In the process this government laid the foundations for the politics of spin. This book is indispensible to an understanding of the way contemporary governments communicate.

Sustainable Lifeways - Cultural Persistence in an Ever-Changing Environment (Hardcover): Naomi F. Miller, Katherine M. Moore,... Sustainable Lifeways - Cultural Persistence in an Ever-Changing Environment (Hardcover)
Naomi F. Miller, Katherine M. Moore, Kathleen Ryan
R1,872 Discovery Miles 18 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sustainable Lifeways addresses forces of conservatism and innovation in societies dependent on the exploitation of aquatic and other wild resources, agriculture, and specialized pastoralism. The volume gathers specialists working in four areas of the world with significant archaeological and paleoenvironmental databases: West Asia, the American Southwest, East Africa, and Andean South America, and contributing to research in three broad time scales: long term (spanning millennia), medium term (archaeological time, spanning centuries or a few thousand years), and recent (ethnohistoric or ethnographic, spanning years or decades). By bringing an archaeological eye to an examination of human response to unpredictable environmental conditions, informed by an understanding of contemporary traditional peoples, the contributors to this volume develop a more detailed picture of how societies perceive environmental risk, how they alter their behavior in the face of changing conditions, and under what challenges the most rapid and far-reaching changes in adaptation have taken place. Sustainable Lifeways enhances our understanding of both the forces of conservatism and innovation which may have been in play in major transitions in the past, such as the development of complex society, and the expansions of early empires. Studies present examples of cattle herders in East Africa, hunter-gatherers and pastoralists in the Levant, South American fisher/farmers, and farmer/hunters of the U.S. Southwest. PMIRC, volume 3

Molecular Hematopathology - An Integrated Case-Based Approach (Hardcover): Rose C. Beck, Erika M. Moore Molecular Hematopathology - An Integrated Case-Based Approach (Hardcover)
Rose C. Beck, Erika M. Moore
R5,331 Discovery Miles 53 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Molecular Hematopathology: An Integrated Case-Based Approach, provides readers an integrated case-informed learning experience of Molecular Hematopathology focused on best-practice neoplastic hematopoietic disorders and related conditions. Through reviews of diagnostic approaches in which a combination of morphologic analysis, flow cytometry, and genetic testing (cytogenetics, FISH, PCR, and/or NGS) are used to best advantage, readers should significantly expand their understanding. The text is not simply a catalog of every hematologic neoplasm having a defined cytogenetic or molecular abnormality, but rather a study of cases whose evaluations illustrate how specific chromosomal and molecular findings are used for diagnosis, prognosis, and for consideration for targeted therapy. Most of the individual chapters include summary tables that compare the described malignancy with similar entities, so that a very broad set of specific hematologic is considered throughout the text. Two sets of quiz questions are also provided for aiding in self-study. The Appendices include a concise overview of cytogenetic and molecular techniques, including a complete guide to reading next generation sequencing (NGS) data. Standard nomenclature (2017 WHO Classification compliant) is used throughout. Hematopathology has undergone several revolutionary periods, including the development of a classification system defining distinct, "real" entities (later evolved to the current WHO classification of hematologic neoplasms), advances in sophisticated immunophenotyping such as flow cytometry, and most recently, an explosion in molecular/genetic testing that greatly expands how we understand the pathophysiology of hematologic disease. The extent, applications, and ramifications of the genomic revolution are still being developed and explored. This book demonstrates how novel advances in molecular and cellular biology translate to modern pathology practice.

Signs of Salvation - The Theme of Creation in John's Gospel (Paperback, New): Anthony M. Moore Signs of Salvation - The Theme of Creation in John's Gospel (Paperback, New)
Anthony M. Moore
R875 Discovery Miles 8 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Was Mary Magdalene really mistaken when she took the Risen Lord to be a 'gardener' working near the tomb where Christ was laid after the crucifixion? In this compelling volume, Anthony M. Moore persuasively argues that Jesus must be recognised, at a theological level, as the Gardener: the Creator-God Himself. The author skilfully examines the strong evidence available to the reader that the narrative material of the Book of Signs (John 2-12), together with the 'High Priestly Prayer' of John 17, is deliberately infused with the fundamental theme of creation. The first sentence of the Gospel, 'in the beginning', meaningfully echoes the start of Genesis, and sets the tone for what is to come. 'Creation indicators', or leitmotifs, which link the signs narratives in the Fourth Gospel to the sequence of the days of creation, are unpicked in this volume in a careful survey of the placement of particular nouns and verbs within the narratives and how often they occur. Upon these foundations, the author builds his strikingly original thesis: that each miraculous 'sign' of John 2-12 corresponds to a day of creation, and that, subtly but unmistakably, John intends to reveal Jesus as the Creator in all His glory. A book that offers a novel and enlightening way of reading John's Gospel, 'Signs of Salvation' will interest any reader seeking a deeper understanding of a fundamental truth about Christ's nature: He is the God of creation, at one with and participating in the creative work of the Father.

Bayard Rustin - American Dreamer (Hardcover): Jerald Podair Bayard Rustin - American Dreamer (Hardcover)
Jerald Podair; Series edited by Jacqueline M. Moore, Nina Mjagkij
R1,822 Discovery Miles 18 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bayard Rustin was a unique twentieth-century American radical voice. A homosexual, World War II draft resister, and ex-communist, he made enormous contributions to the civil rights, socialist, labor, peace, and gay rights movements in the United States, despite being viewed as an "outsider" even by fellow activists. Rustin was a humanist who championed the disadvantaged and oppressed, regardless of identity. In Bayard Rustin: American Dreamer, Jerald Podair examines the life and career of a man who shaped virtually every aspect of the modern civil rights movement as a theorist, strategist, and spokesman. Podair begins by covering the period from Rustin's 1912 birth in West Chester, Pennsylvania, to his 1946 release from federal prison, where he served over two years for draft evasion. After his release, Rustin threw himself into work on behalf of pacifism and racial integration, two goals that, at this stage of his career, fit together almost seamlessly. Podair goes on to examine Rustin's role as the main organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, the most important civil rights demonstration in American history. He was a major influence on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s philosophy of nonviolent direct action, which led to the strategy that changed the course of American race relations. During the last years of his life, Rustin continued to champion the causes of socialism, coalition politics, and racial integration, as he also sought to aid oppressed people and foster democratic institutions worldwide. Yet for all this, Rustin was rarely permitted a leading role in the movements he helped to shape. Because of his sexuality and his background as a former communist and draft resister, he was forced to do much of his work on the fringes, offering his organizational, strategic, and rhetorical skills to public leaders who chose to keep him at arm's length. Despite this, as Podair makes clear, Bayard Rustin was one of the most important civil rights leaders and one of the most important radical leaders in twentieth-century American history. Documents in this book include excerpts from Rustin's writings, speeches, and public statements."
