What does it mean to be middle class in contemporary global cities?
What do the middle classes do to these cities and what do these
cities do to the middle classes? Do the middle classes engage in
social mix or are they focused on 'people like us'? Based on
comparative study this book explores middle-class identities across
Paris and London.
Sport volunteering is becoming an increasingly popular motive for
international travel. Many tourism organisations now advertise
sport volunteering projects, with colleges and universities also
offering students the opportunity to participate in similar
projects abroad. This is the first book to bring together diverse
and interdisciplinary insights into the development of the
contemporary sport volunteering phenomenon. It addresses conceptual
uncertainties and challenges emerging from the growing
international sport volunteering market, and offers insight into
its future directions, impact and sustainability. Drawing on both
quantitative and qualitative methodologies, Part I examines
volunteering in the context of international sporting events, while
Part II evaluates volunteering initiatives related to sport
development. Including case studies from Australia, Cameroon,
Namibia, Norway, Russia, the UK, the US and Zambia, this
substantial volume provides a truly international perspective on
the changing roles of sport volunteering. Showcasing the latest
research from across the globe, International Sports Volunteering
is a valuable resource for any course on sport studies, sport event
management, sport development, sport tourism, sport geography, the
sociology of sport or leisure studies.
The perceived quality of a destination's cultural offering has long
been a significant factor in determining tourist choices of
destination. More recently, the need to present touristic offerings
that include cultural experiences and heritage has become widely
recognised, that this aspect of the tourism experience is an
important differentiator of destinations, as well as being amongst
the most manageable. This has also led to an increase in the
management of such experiences through special exhibitions, events
and festivals, as well as through ensuring more routine and
controlled access to heritage sites. Reflecting the increasing
application of cultural heritage as a driver for tourism and
development, this book provides for the first time a cohesive
volume on the subject that is theoretically rich, practically
applied and empirically grounded. Written by expert scholars and
practitioners in the field, the book covers a broad range of
theoretical perspectives of cultural heritage tourism;
regeneration, policy, stakeholders, marketing, socio-economic
development, impacts, sustainability, volunteering and ICT. It
takes a broad view, integrating international examples of sites,
monuments as well as intangible cultural heritage, motor vehicle
heritage events and modern art museums. This significant book
furthers knowledge of the theory and application of tourism within
the context of cultural heritage and will be of interest to
students, researchers and practitioners in a range of disciplines.
Volunteer Tourism is one of the major growth areas in contemporary
tourism, where tourists for various reasons seek alternative
goodwill experiences and activities. To meet this demand there has
been a surge in volunteer programmes offered in range of
destinations organized by a variety of charities and tour operators
which is predicted to continue to grow in the future. Volunteer
Tourism provides an in-depth analysis of the complex issues
associated with traditional and contemporary volunteer tourism.
Reflecting the growth in this phenomenon, this book provides a
cohesive collection of chapters written from a range of
international expert scholars and researchers. The theoretically
rich, practically applied and empirically grounded contributions
are based on current and diverse research in the area. This
groundbreaking volume explores topics which have not been addressed
in the literature before, such as the impact on host communities,
introducing new areas and ideas to the field. The diverse range of
themes are identified and addressed, including volunteer tourism
and sustainability to, uniquely, the examination of volunteer
tourism stakeholders - volunteers themselves, the host-to-guest
exchange, and the organizations - and management of volunteers.
These themes are examined in a range of international case studies,
demonstrating the wide range of issues associated with volunteer
tourism. This volume is a timely addition offering an innovative
approach to the area. Volunteer Tourism will be of interest to both
students and researchers interested in tourism, leisure and
development, as well as non-academics, practitioners, NGOs
government officials at all levels.

One of us (FAB) published a book Problems in Electronics with
Solutions in 1957 which became well established and ran to five
editions, the last revised and enlarged edition appearing in 1976.
When the first edition was written it covered almost the complete
undergraduate electronics courses in engin eering at universities.
One book, at a price students can afford, can no longer cover an
undergraduate course in electronics. It has therefore been decided
to produce a book covering one important section of such a course
using the experience gained and a few problems from previous
editions of Problems in Electronics with Solutions. The book is
based largely on problems collected by us over many years and given
to undergraduate electronic and electrical engineers. Its purpose
is to present the problems, together with a large number of their
solutions, in the hope that it will prove valuable to
undergraduates and other teachers. It should also be useful for
Master's degree students in electronic and electrical engineering
and physics, research workers, engineers and scientists in industry
and as a reference source."
In the past few years, the financial industry has undergone dynamic
structural changes that have deeply affected the sales process.
Bruised by market volatility, today's consumer is skeptical and
demands more for less. A business needs fresh approaches to sell in
today's tough marketplace.
Here are the 22 Keys that can help any financial professional
make more money, work less, and maximize his potential. Industry
leaders James Benson and Paul Karasik combine their personal
experience with the shared wisdom of the masters. Each key contains
proven, actionable sales guidelines, including: The four primary
fears that could destroy a sale--and how to help prospects overcome
themThe nine most effective strategic approaches to "target
marketing" successFive guidelines for qualifying prospects more
effectivelySixty-five ways to snap a sales slumpTen ways to get
clients to say yesFour simple steps to generate new business with
current clientsFive guidelines for overcoming objectionsSix sample
scripts to make closing ratios soar
Whether a company has been in business for years or is just
beginning, each key will unlock a new door on the path to sales
success.
The aim of the work is give an overview of the activity in the
field of Photonic Crystal developed in the frame of COST P11 action
. The main objective of the COST P11 action was to unify and
coordinate national efforts aimed at studying linear and nonlinear
optical interactions with Photonic Crystals (PCs), without
neglecting an important aspect related to the material research as
idea and methods of realizations of 3D PC, together with the
development and implementation of measurement techniques for the
experimental evaluation of their potential applications in
different area, as for example telecommunication with novel optical
fibers, lasers, nonlinear multi-functionality, display devices,
opto-electronics, sensors.
The book contain contributions from authors who gave their
lecture at the Cost P11 Training School.
Training School was held at the Warsaw University (2007) and
National Institute of Telecommunications (May 23), Warsaw. It was
attended by 23 students. The focus of the School was on the work of
working groups WG1 and WG3 of the COST P11 Action, concerning the
active and non-linear properties of photonic crystals and the
fabrication and characterisation of photonic crystal structures.
This was supported by two opening lectures providing a general
introduction to the topics covered within the action and a summary
of the challenges faced by and achievements of the modelling and
simulation activities developed during the Action.
