Division and Mainstream Suspense/Mystery As a barrister in 1818
London, William Snopes has witnessed firsthand the danger of only
the wealthy having their voices heard, and he's a strong advocate
who defends the poorer classes against the powerful. That changes
the day a struggling heiress, Lady Madeleine Jameson, arrives at
his door. In a last-ditch effort to save her faltering estate, Lady
Jameson invested in a merchant brig, the Padget. The ship was
granted a rare privilege by the king's regent: a Letter of Marque
authorizing the captain to seize the cargo of French traders
operating illegally in the Indian Sea. Yet when the Padget returns
to London, her crew is met by soldiers ready to take possession of
their goods and arrest the captain for piracy. And the Letter--the
sole proof his actions were legal--has mysteriously vanished. Moved
by the lady's distress, intrigued by the Letter, and goaded by an
opposing solicitor, Snopes takes the case. But as he delves deeper
into the mystery, he learns that the forces arrayed against Lady
Jameson, and now himself, are even more perilous than he'd
imagined. "The Barrister and the Letter of Marque combines the
intrigue of John Grisham, the vibrant world of Charles Dickens, and
a mystery worthy of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. . . . This richly
historical and lively paced story has all the makings of a modern
classic."--JOCELYN GREEN, Christy Award-winning author of Shadows
of the White City "At once atmospheric and gripping, Johnson's
latest is a luminous and refreshing new offering in inspirational
historical fiction."--RACHEL MCMILLAN, author of The London
Restoration and The Mozart Code "A fascinating glimpse into a
Regency London readers seldom see."--ROSEANNA M. WHITE, bestselling
author of Edwardian fiction

Emotionally Focused Family Therapy is the definitive manual for
applying the effectiveness of emotionally focused therapy (EFT) to
the complexities of family life. The book sets out a theoretical
framework for mental health professionals to enhance their
conceptualization of family dynamics, considering a broad range of
presenting problems and family groups. The first section applies
EFT theory and principles to the practice of family therapy. The
second section explicates the process of EFT and examines the
interventions associated with the EFT approach to families. In the
final section, the authors provide case examples of emotionally
focused family therapy (EFFT) practice, with chapters on traumatic
loss, stepfamilies, externalizing disorders, and internalizing
disorders. Integrating up-to-date research with clinical
transcripts and case examples throughout, Emotionally Focused
Family Therapy is a must-read for therapists looking to promote the
development and renewal of family relationships using the
principles of EFT.
Laurie Johnson investigates two Enlightenment-era reactions to
honor in Locke and Rousseau. She provides an in-depth analysis of
how political philosophers John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau
react differently to the place and importance of honor in society.
Locke continues the trend of rejecting honor as a means of
achieving order and justice in society, preferring instead the
modern motivation of rational self-interest. Johnson explores the
possibility of an honor code that is compatible with Lockean
liberalism, but also points out the problems inherent in such a
project. She then turns to Rousseau, whose reaction to
Enlightenment ideas reveals our own divided mood. Rousseau s
worries and ambivalence about honor are our worries and
ambivalence, and his failed attempt to revise honor in a way that
works within the modern system highlights how difficult any project
to resurrect the value of honor will be. This book will interest
anyone who wonders what happened to honor in our world today,
including students of communitarianism. Johnson warns us that we
cannot simply look to the past, to the ideals of Locke or other
Enlightenment thinkers such as the American founders, for answers
to our current family, social, and economic problems, because our
problems at least partly stem from Enlightenment liberal thought.
Instead we must fully recognize this connection before we can start
to formulate a definition of honor that can work for us today.

While Plato’s and Aristotle’s theories of virtue have received
extensive scholarly attention, less work has been done on
Xenophon’s portraits of virtue and on his attitude towards the
theoretical issues connected with it. And yet, Xenophon offers one
of the best sources we have for thinking about virtue in ancient
Greece, because he combines the analytical interests of a Socratic
with a historian’s interest in real life. Until recently,
scholars of Xenophon tended to focus either on the
historiographical writings or on the philosophical writings
(chiefly Memorabilia, with some attention to the other Socratic
writings and Hiero). Cyropaedia was treated as a separate entity,
and Xenophon’s short and more technical treatises were generally
studied only by those with particular interest in their specialized
topics (such as horsemanship, hunting, and Athenian finances). But
recent work by Vincent Azoulay and by Vivienne Gray have shown the
essential unity of his writings. This volume continues this
pan-Xenophontic trend by studying the virtues across Xenophon’s
oeuvre and connecting them with a wide range of Greek literature,
from Homer and the tragedians to Herodotus and Thucydides, the
orators, Plato, and Aristotle.

This three volume set on World War II German swords by LTC (Ret.)
Thomas M. Johnson, a leading collector and authoritative
researcher, is a follow-up to his successful and highly acclaimed
four volume series on World War II German daggers by Schiffer
Publishing (1995). Johnson is the author of some twenty-six
reference books on the subject of German edged weaponry. This sword
series has been designed to aid not only the beginning collector,
but also the seasoned advanced collector and specialist. These
volumes are the result of many years of arduous research conducted
on both sides of the Atlantic, and are a scholarly study that is
more than a perfunctory annotation and illustration of the known
basis patterns. Also, the series is a study of a culture and the
crafts that actually produced the blades, as well as being a manual
in the art of collecting them. The embracing scope is both
educational and recreational, and adds a whole new dimension to
this popular collecting subject as a whole. Within these books one
finds the historical background, the manufacturing techniques,
constructional information, the actual basic patterns, variations
and rarities, and a whole host of salient facts of absorbing
interest.

This powerful YA memoir-manifesto follows journalist and LGBTQ+ activist George M. Johnson as they explore their childhood, adolescence, and college years, growing up under the duality of being black and queer.
From memories of getting their teeth kicked out by bullies at age five to their loving relationship with their grandmother, to their first sexual experience, the stories wrestle with triumph and tragedy and cover topics such as gender identity, toxic masculinity, brotherhood, family, inequality, consent, and Black joy.
The Digital Closet: LGBT*Q Identities and Affective Politics in a
Social Media Age discusses how LGBT*Q individuals occupy a
precarious space within society as a marginalized community in the
United States. They are afforded representation in some venues yet
are often invisible. Through social media, LGBT*Q individuals have
sought new ways to forge communities and increase their visibility.
This rise in visibility afforded individuals means to seek out and
distribute information to help in the coming out process. Combining
archival research, observation, interviews, and visual discourse
analysis of social media feeds, the Patrick Johnson examines the
role social media plays in expressions of LGBT*Q politics, culture,
and coming out. Despite the messages not having changed
fundamentally, the improved access to LGBT*Q stories have amplified
the ones that are sent. Johnson argues that this is positive in
acting as intervention for LGBT*Q suicide rates, hate crimes, and
discrimination from the outside. However, the author also contends
that it has vastly re-centered and prioritized white, cisgender,
masculinity, obscuring other stories and creating potentially
dangerous environments for POC, women, trans* individuals, and gay
men who do not meet this high standard of masculinity. Scholars of
gender studies, media studies, and queer theory will find this book
particularly interesting.
First published in 1995. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor &
Francis, an informa company.
Xenophon's Socratic Works demonstrates that Xenophon, a student of
Socrates, military man, and man of letters, is an indispensable
source for our understanding of the life and philosophy of
Socrates. David M. Johnson restores Xenophon's most ambitious
Socratic work, the Memorabilia (Socratic Recollections), to its
original literary context, enabling readers to experience it as
Xenophon's original audience would have, rather than as a pale
imitation of Platonic dialogue. He shows that the Memorabilia,
together with Xenophon's Apology, provides us with our best
evidence for the trial of Socrates, and a comprehensive and
convincing refutation of the historical charges against Socrates.
Johnson's account of Socrates' moral psychology shows how
Xenophon's emphasis on control of the passions can be reconciled
with the intellectualism normally attributed to Socrates. Chapters
on Xenophon's Symposium and Oeconomicus (Estate Manager) reveal how
Xenophon used all the literary tools of Socratic dialogue to defend
Socratic sexual morality (Symposium) and debate the merits and
limits of conventional elite values (Oeconomicus). Throughout the
book, Johnson argues that Xenophon's portrait of Socrates is rich
and coherent, and largely compatible with the better-known portrait
of Socrates in Plato. Xenophon aimed not to provide a rival
portrait of Socrates, Johnson shows, but to supplement and clarify
what others had said about Socrates. Xenophon's Socratic Works,
thus, provides readers with a far firmer basis for reconstruction
of the trial of Socrates, a key moment in the history of Athenian
democracy, and for our understanding of Socrates' seminal impact on
Greek philosophy. This volume introduces Xenophon's Socratic works
to a wide range of readers, from undergraduate students
encountering Socrates or ancient philosophy for the first time to
scholars with interests in Socrates or ancient philosophy more
broadly. It is also an important resource for readers interested in
Socratic dialogue as a literary form, the trial of Socrates, Greek
sexual morality (the central topic of Xenophon's Symposium), or
Greek social history (for which the Oeconomicus is a key text).
The African American Struggle for Library Equality: The Untold
Story of the Julius Rosenwald Fund Library Program unveils the
almost forgotten philanthropic efforts of Julius Rosenwald, former
president of Sears, Roebuck, Co. and an elite business man.
Rosenwald simply desired to improve, "the well-being of mankind"
through access to education. Many people are familiar with Mr.
Rosenwald as the founder of the Julius Rosenwald Fund that
established more than 5,300 rural schools in 15 Southern states
during the period 1917-1938. However, there is another major piece
of the puzzle, the Julius Rosenwald Fund Library Program. That
program established more than 10,000 school, college, and public
libraries, funded library science programs that trained African
American librarians, and made evident the need for libraries to be
supported by local governments. The African American Struggle for
Library Equality is the first comprehensive history of the Julius
Rosenwald Fund Library Program to be published. The book reveals a
new understanding of library practices of the early 20th century.
Through original research and use of existing literature, Aisha
Johnson Jones exposes historic library practices that discriminated
against blacks, and the necessary remedies the Julius Rosenwald
Fund Library Program implemented to cure this injustice, which
ultimately influenced other philanthropists like Andrew Carnegie
and Bill Gates (the Gates Foundation has a library program) as well
as organizations like the American Library Association.
The Routledge Handbook of Neuroethics offers the reader an informed
view of how the brain sciences are being used to approach,
understand, and reinvigorate traditional philosophical questions,
as well as how those questions, with the grounding influence of
neuroscience, are being revisited beyond clinical and research
domains. It also examines how contemporary neuroscience research
might ultimately impact our understanding of relationships,
flourishing, and human nature. Written by 61 key scholars and fresh
voices, the Handbook's easy-to-follow chapters appear here for the
first time in print and represent the wide range of viewpoints in
neuroethics. The volume spotlights new technologies and historical
articulations of key problems, issues, and concepts and includes
cross-referencing between chapters to highlight the complex
interactions of concepts and ideas within neuroethics. These
features enhance the Handbook's utility by providing readers with a
contextual map for different approaches to issues and a guide to
further avenues of interest. Chapter 11 of this book is freely

Lacy Johnson bangs on the glass doors of a sleepy local police
station in the middle of the night. Her feet are bare; her body is
bruised and bloody; U-bolts dangle from her wrists. She has
escaped, but not unscathed. "The Other Side" is the haunting
account of a first passionate and then abusive relationship; the
events leading to Johnson's kidnapping, rape, and imprisonment; her
dramatic escape; and her hard-fought struggle to recover. At once
thrilling, terrifying, harrowing, and hopeful, "The Other Side"
offers more than just a true crime record. In language both stark
and poetic, Johnson weaves together a richly personal narrative
with police and FBI reports, psychological records, and
neurological experiments, delivering a raw and unforgettable story
of trauma and transformation.
